This was a very enjoyable interview! Steve had some great questions and getting Rolf’s perspective of post war Germany was intriguing. I’m looking forward to interview number two on flying the F104G! Thanks to both of you.
Great interview, it was good to hear a new perspective on the widow maker reputation. The changes it training and organisation really shows that the F-104 was not as dangerous as I thought. I loved how it was shown in The right stuff, and really the right stuff for that jet was training and maintenance, as well as pilot aptitude.
The content on this channel is absolutely top-tier. As a longtime military aviation enthusiast, the only analogy this same-aged brain can come up with is that it reminds me of the good old days thumbing through AFM (& early Combat Aircraft) magazines. Thank you.
Thank you Rolf and Steve. Some sad stories (E.g. Ejector seat) which would be outrageous nowadays. Looking forward to part two. Rolf, your English language is excellent, I’d like to see what books you have in your library!
Great interview, with interesting questions ... I usually prefer to view shorter videos, this is the first long video from your channel that I watch, but let me tell you that it is totally worth the time spent .. I enjoyed both the subject and the views of Mr Stunkel .. once again, kudos for a great video :)
Very interesting interview, strange that the F-104, which was originally designed as a high altitude (?) fast interceptor ends up in what sounds like a "niche" ground/sea attack role. I must say I saw a pair of 104's at an air show with my kids some 15 years ago doing a high speed low altitude fly-by and being thrilled as the thunder of the engines came from one end of the of the runway as the planes had already reached the other end! Thanks for these podcasts, I love 'em! BTW, are ALL of the interviews available on the site or do some of them drop out after a period of time? The interface is a little confusing.
Woke up drowsy but having seen the preview of this interview yesterday, instantly came to life when I saw the full interview had been uploaded today. Could have happily listened to hours of discussion just on the East/West German dynamics, let alone fighter aviation. Really hoping you're both up for a few more interviews, there's certainly enough content to cover and the insights are both fascinating and entertaining. Also, really love the style in which you interview your guests and the complexity of your questions. On a side note, I saw an exceptional 20-min doco on TH-cam titled "The Hunters: Singapore's Hawker Hunter Story" about the founding pilots of the Singapore Air Force after the British withdrawal. I think it'd be pure gold if you could interview one of them. Thanks for the channel and the effort you put in Steve. Cheers mate.
Steve...... looking forward to seeing your book being bundled with the DCS F-15. I've also got your Red Eagles book and it's fascinating stuff. You're that rarest of things these days, a credit to the profession of journalism. 👍 Fascinating interview as usual. I salute Rolf, the F104 must've been an absolute b*stard to fly, with those tiny wings. Haha!
A girl in my 5th grade class spring 89 brought pieces of the wall for show an tell. I guess she had family in west Germany on one side of her family. Wall came down not long after. i remember not knowing what to think and in all honesty kinda a let down because the military brinksmanship was cool as a kid! I always loved Soviet Military Journals and other books in libray even if they were very wrong intelligence in those books. Soviet vs allied weapons was really great reading as well as really great cold war based movies in the 80s as a kid!
lol its not like they cant shoot it down, its just that the risk to reward balance is too small. There is really nothing that balloon is doing of value that satellites are not doing already. The only reason its there is for political bs.

Only 5 mins in and I am all in with Mr. Stunkel's storytelling!

A fascinating interview! What a story and life he has experienced.

Thank you.
Thanks, Jason. It's an interesting observation because I used to write for both AFM and CA back in the day.
Really, I did not know that! What era would that have been?

Glad you enjoyed it, SS.
Thanks so much! My books are on Amazon😁👍
Fascinating interview

Thank you! Yes, most people want shorter videos. It's one of the reasons my channel grows so slowly!
Great interview, can’t wait for part 2.
Cheers, David.
Wonderful interview--very smooth, interesting, and informative from an obviously talented pilot and teacher. Great questions!
From the king of smooth, himself. Thanks, BC.

Cheers, Loc. More F-104 discussion to come from Rolf, soon. We are going to record a Tornado interview later this month, too.

Faszinierende Geschichte geschichtenerzählen
No way you were born in 1975, I was guessing 34 at most
I'll take that... and repeat it back to people even if they don't ask!
@@10percenttrue hahaha you’re welcome
@@10percenttrue Get a room, you two
Too bad. We could use an F-104 right about now to shoot down that stupid "weather" balloon over Montana.
lol
