    This line up is sitting quietly deep in the Cumberland Hollars lost in time: Reading Railroad ALCO RS-3 now in the faded Southern Green, and White, and two passenger cars that was once owned by the New River Scenic Railway, that ran on the now abandon New River Railway Branch. You are at the south-end of the branch sitting behind the idle (now closed) Premium Coal Companies (TCMC) Mine in Briceville,TN. This line is still owned by Norfolk Southern, but could you only imagine that 4 plus years ago this was a bee hive of action where 4,000 tons of Cumberland Plateau Coal was pulled from the deep mines and surface pits delivered by truck, and rails. As time went on and coal was slowly beginning to make a decline a small organization known as the New River Scenic Railway formed,lease the line, and ran tourist operation til about 2008-2009 and went under due to a fire at the New River Scenic Railway home office, and depot which killed the organization, and eventually led to the state absorbing the organization, and assets. Years after RJ Corman leased the line til 2013 when the Premium Coal Companies (TCMC) Mine went under, and the lease wasn't renewed by RJ Corman from NS. Today the Branch, the mines, and its history is fading away by the years, and the only example of this line that was being used at one point are these pieces of abandoned equipment that once belong to an organization that doesn't exist. Thanx to KD rail photography for some of my lost info... nice video gentleman

    The locomotive is an Alco RS-2 road switcher, a first generation diesel. Unlike modern diesels, it was run with the long hood forward. It was never steam and never coal. The train was obviously last used in tourist service, the first clue being the baggage car set up as a snack bar. The other clue being a locomotive normally used in freight service painted in Southern’s elegant passenger color scheme. You didn’t show the back end of the train, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a caboose, yet another clue of tourist service. Cabooses were never used on regular passenger trains.

      Hamilton Sullivan, it could be an RS3. The outside shots at night make it hard to tell. But definitely an Alco RS in Southern passenger livery.

    I'm a conductor. That wheel on the outside is the hand brakes, when you pulled that lever you released them. Good thing for you it's been sitting awhile so it's in emergency. Won't go anywhere. That space that goes down into the nose that you thought was storage is the bathroom. Looks like a SD40. We still use them in the yard. It's not abandoned it's in storage, I've seen older in service. Keep an eye out, RR police are Federally licenced LEO's meaning you get caught you're done. 👍 Cool video.

I think you all made the wisest choice. It was great you got the video you did before you had to go. You covered a lot of ground in a short time.

    Believe it or not people that run child pornography website try to locate places they can run their business and store their material out of the way places. There was a story just recently about a giant shipping contain out in the middle of no where that had computers and boxes and shelves of kiddy prom. Be very careful as people maybe trying to use that train for unknown, illegible and dangerous business

    Used to work rot the Rail Road. The green wheel you were turning is called a hand break. Kind of like a parking break on an automobile. Train breaks work off compressed air , no air , no breaks. We always set the hand break if the car or engine was going to sit there with no air. Thanks for the video , nice !

    I didn't read all the comments but i did see and hear this: at 10:14 as you turn the camera 10:22 look into the metal plate on the wall to the left i did see a shadow there moving right to left; at 13:13 when you say "what's that?!" there is a womans voice? saying "right here" or "come here" something like that; 15:10 yep that "hiss" sounded like when a diver is taking breath from the oxygen tank. All of you are awesome and I do enjoy all the vid's. Just as nutty as we all are, in different ways, there are just as many out there..so please be careful with all these endeavors. Tracy; I used to live in Reno; and I was there 2 weeks ago. Between Reno, Sparks, Carson City and Virginia City, there is a ton of things to explore. The hotel in Virginia City is an excellant choice. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is a good choice. Sparks has a couple of abandoned casino's; and downtown Reno, some of the shops (one a pawn shop) are former casino's and have history. The rock climb across from Harrah's is the former Fitzgearld's Casino; and it has history. The sunken train tracks (dig) used to run at street level until they spent $1 Billion digging the trench. There's a locomotive and railcars on display in Sparks. There used to be af Coney Island amusement park between Reno & Sparks. I-80 now covers most of the site; but there's a small restaurant that is the lone survivor of that amusement park. Where the event center for Harrah's is, used to be where Harold's Club was; which Howard Hughes owned and stayed awhile. They have the air show, hot air balloon races, bowling championship, and that Mapes Home, tha tthe city keeps moving to a new location. I can name a whole lot more - mines, Lake Tahoe, abandoned railroads, etc.

    Poor old girl, just sitting there slowly rusting away just seeming to be forgotten in time. Unlike her glory days just right out the factory with a fresh coat of paint, ready to be a iron working horse of her time. SUO 520, know that even though you're time seemed to be short coming you will never be forgotten.

    • @USAFreewayROTF
      @USAFreewayROTF 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would they just leave it? It's hazardous for rail service to leave a locomotive sitting on the tracks. Making it dangerous. If a train ever went down those tracks by accident, it would end badly. Whether by the poor rail maintenance, or the old rusty train, it's game over. They seriously need to remove that thing off the tracks.

    • @vermilionrailfan5651

      @@USAFreewayROTF that's why derails exist. And I'm pretty sure all of the handbrakes are applied.

    • @learnctr9443
      @learnctr9443 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@USAFreewayROTF I am pretty sure someone said the original railroad owner abandoned the track. The site seeing company rented the track to use for sight seeing. That all went away when the site seeing company office burnt down and the business was lost. No trains travel these tracks. The train was most likely parked because it had a problem but it was never fixed and it was not worth fixing for the collectors. I don't know but it sounds good. lol

    When I was in 2nd grade I lived by our town's "train depot". Was a little bitty building that was just the "office" but the depot nonetheless lol. They would always park the engine right next to it all the time as they went inside. Well.... kid does what kids do and "this kid" had a empty train engine to explore lol..... Used to play on it all the time.... The part where said "I like flippin' all the switches" ..... he likes it, but a "kid" just cant RESIST lol. The scary thing looking back now is..... they did not shut the engine down when it was parked so it was idling as it was "parked".... One day I was messin around on it, and I managed to find the HORN lever........ I didn't know I could RUN that fast!!!!!!! lol. Bout a week later train was rolling by and as I was playing on the gravel piles that was next to the "depot", the engine didn't stop at the depot, it stopped in front of the gravel pit and instead of getting off and going inside, he got off and straight to ME!! lol Of coarse after the horn on the "empty" train went off he saw me hauling ass as he looked out the window lol. I got a "speech" (of coarse) but after he got done getting on to me, he gave a ride on the engine... wasn't a 'long" ride but still gave me a ride after "yelling" at me....... If that happened now days..... it would probably involve cops, judges, and legal system with my name in it. But..... I never sneak onto the "empty engine" again after that lol.
