    Are these instructions only for tropical species? If we plan on keeping just during the summer months, do you open the net to release them all at the end of summer? What if there are leftover eggs throughout the plants each time you clear the butterflies and the cycle keeps repeating itself through winter?

      @@michaelawallnerova4890 because flying insects like bees, butterflies and flies have 3 extra eyes on their head. I don't know how they are called in English. Anyway these organs can detect the light and the darkness to know where they are. It's more complicated than this but I can't tell you more since I 'm not English and I need a lot of scientific terms to explain. But in a few words that's all.

    is it legal to have a personal tropical butterfly greenhouse in the USA?

    • @TropicalButterfliesUK
      @TropicalButterfliesUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can have a butterfly greenhouse in the USA. But only with native US species. I believe the tropical species there need a license due to the possibility of the escaping and breeding. Luckily in the UK and Europe, if they were to escape then they wouldn't survive the winter so no licenses are needed here.

    I have one silly question is it possible to have butterflies all year round (specially during winter) in a greenhouse?

    • @TropicalButterfliesUK
      @TropicalButterfliesUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it is possible. But depending on where you are based it can be very expensive to heat a greenhouse. There is also the issue of making sure the plants have enough light to continue growing and flowering.

    Hi, i'm a researcher starting to work with south american butterflies. I'd like to breed them to have easy access to them. Would I be able to feed them using only nectar? no flowers? I need to make the initial set up as simple as possible, also probably indoor.

    • @TropicalButterfliesUK
      @TropicalButterfliesUK  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, its possible to use only nectar solution to feed the butterflies. If you are planning on keeping heliconius you might need to add some amino acid powder to the mix.

    • @elatu
      @elatu ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TropicalButterfliesUK Thanks a lot for answering and for the tip. I could also provide them fruit. We are just finishing the equipment for what we want to do (if you are curious, just search in youtube for "eyeshine butterfly", there is a video by Benitos Explanations that explains it really well).
      We still are not completely sure which butterflies to use. Probably Ortilia ithra, or maybe Dione vanillae because they are so easy to find here. The ones I would really like to try are Doxocopa laurentia and Morpho epistrophus argentinus. Maybe after the other ones, and if we can breed them successfully.

    Do they also need flowers?

    • @TropicalButterfliesUK
      @TropicalButterfliesUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      They dont use flowers, only fruit. It will likely be the conditions wernt quite right for them such as being too hot or dry or not having enough space to fly.

    • @thimoschreiber4275
      @thimoschreiber4275 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TropicalButterfliesUK well i am shure that they had enough space to fly and to cold/wet also unlikly. I measurd the Temperatur of the greenhous and it was 45 degrees Celsius. I guess thats to hot. How do you cool down the greenhouse? I tried ventilation with 4 roof windows and a fan that blows in the colder air from outside but best i got was 42 degrees and in the evening and night around 25

    • @TropicalButterfliesUK
      @TropicalButterfliesUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thimoschreiber4275Yes, 45 celsius is far too hot for all tropical butterflies, they wont last long. It should be ideally 26-28c maximum, with 80% humidity. Anything over 32c will be a problem for both the butterflies and plants. You could try putting shading over the top of the greenhouse, installing misters or foggers, adding more plants, hosing it down a few times per day, removing panels to allow extra air flow.

    • @TropicalButterfliesUK
      @TropicalButterfliesUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're only keeping the butterflies in the summer then the costs will be minimal. The heater was only on the 30w fan setting for most of the summer while making this setup, which is around 13p per day. In the slightly cooler early and late summer months the heater will run for a 2-4 hours in 5 minute bursts over the course of the day which is around 75p-£1.11 per day. But it will depend on the size of the space, the amount of insulation, the heater settings and the outside tempertures, so if you have a smart meter it's a good way to keep an eye on it.
