      That is hilarious because he comes from a long line of educators, he has an aunt and some uncles who were music teachers. His great aunt was Sheila Younge Wilson Vp Kamala Harris first grade teacher....it makes sense that he would be like the cool music teacher!!

    He's right about Beth Gibbons.
    I was at the 2 very first shows when they came back with Third. Met her between the 2 shows. Told her that the show the previous night was amazing. Thought she would tell me "thanks !" and leave. Instead of that, she asked me which parts were the best to me and we finally talked for like 30 minutes.
    When she left, she hugged me and told me "thank you for sharing your feelings about our music with me".
    So humble and down to earth.
    Met some other members of the band that same weekend and they were all as gentle as her.
    No stupid "rock star attitude". Just down to earth music lovers. Loved that. A great experience in my life.

    Amoeba I can't express or explain how much I appreciate this series. I've been watching these for years and have recently been, 're-bingeing' the old and new clips. From DJ Spinna, J Rocc and Karriem Riggins, my idol Peanut Butter Wolf to this amazing passionate gifted brother, Adrian Younge. Thank you for creating a platform for them to share their passion and pass down their music knowledge and influences. Much love. Peace.

I thought I was hot ishh' for having 2 of his albums. Hehe.. I have that David Axelrod vinyl too. Songs of Innocence is a great album as well, and people sampled the ishh out of it. I guess Im being reminded of how dope Portishead is too. Time goes by and u stop playing older stuff sometimes. I need to bring it back!! Great episode. Reminds me of my own record collection. Amoeba is great cuz it lets us hear different perspectives.
    For example, even though i disagree, all of his picks here are seen as a “foundation” or a “trailblazer” for HIP HOP... he sees it through the lens of someone associated with the “hiphop” culture, so he relates everything that inspired it to be like “pre hip-hop” music. Everything is related to hip hop for him.
    But I might see hip hop as a “byproduct” or a “result” of artists in latin music/funk/soul (verocai/gil scott/delfonics). To me hip hop might just be a natural musical tendency, like how a black metal artist might incorporate synthesizers after listening to minimalist brian eno.
    Just an interesting thought that people might have a reversed perspective on things...

    • @henryhill92
      @henryhill92 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So what you're saying is, you actually agree with him, you just want to use semantics to be reductive towards hip hop?

  • @anthonychilds8193
    @anthonychilds8193 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outstanding selections and, for real, the Verocai debut is right around 30 minutes and there's a lifetime of music in it. Like several now-classic Brazilian albums, this one was WIDELY ignored/lost/forgotten by all but a rabid few for over 3 decades (see also: Jose Mauro). Follow Verocai on Instagram. And man, do I miss a good flea market. I am surprised Younge didn't mention Roy Ayers as a major influence, but perhaps he has all the albums so it wasn't any left for him to buy and rep one of his heroes. Axelrod, amazing. I didn't know about him until 2005 even though Mo' Wax released an album in 2001 (and I wasn't listening to much mainstream hip hop which would've sampled Axelrod). Loved all Adrian's selections and will def check Eugene McDaniels as I am completely unfamiliar with that artist.
