  • “Is an MRI advised to diagnose the MCL tear? I have the option of getting one, but am pretty sure it’s the MCL. Wondering if I need to jump through that hoop, or is it unnecessary? BTW, it would be an MRI without contrast. I do not want dye in my system 😬 Thanks”

Whether or not to get an MRI is a common question we get here in this clinic and online.
Dr. David helps you determine your decision on waiting or immediately getting an MRI for your knee injury.
There are 2 key diagnoses that doctors almost always send their patients for MRIs but they are not always necessary. Getting an MRI has shown an increased chance of having knee surgery.
This raises the question, "If I never had the MRI, might I not have had knee surgery?...Could I have healed without surgery?"

Thank you! Yeah, I just found out that I do have mild arthritis and bursitis. But, the arthritis is normal wear and tear for my age(I’m 43). They just failed to mention that on the X-ray. That is why it doesn’t show up in the MRI results, because they only point out what is abnormal.

Hi Jennifer, we are so sorry to hear about your arthritis and bursitis diagnosis! You are correct about the MRI and to be honest, imaging isn't always conclusive and can't be relied on. It is good to hear the diagnosis is mild which means it can be easier to treat.

Hi, im from South Africa, thank you for your amazing program, I was sent for a xray but it showed clear on the xray, my knee is painful and swollen for a month now without a injury, I try to do your exercises but swelling does not go down. Dr thinks it osteoarthritis, but fluid is filing up below the knee as well.

Btw: I would like to Oder your program.. wish one should I do?
I have Hip labrum tear and also knees been in distress since last year October. First was my knee in agony went through the pop, swelling, ext.. the most pain unimaginable throughout the day and night.. was doing PI and all but then few months later I went back to ask my Ortho why am I now suffering from my hip. He order MRI.
MRI for knee supposedly don’t show Meniscus tear but when I was doing the exercises with my physical therapist he said it must be a meniscus the way it hurts and how it feels and so on but when I told that to my ortho he said maybe, it could be that ..but yet in the MRI he only sees just a little bit of cartilage damage 🤔.

I had an MRI and x-ray on my right knee, because it was swollen and it was taking a long time for it to go away. The X-ray said that I had mild osteoarthritis in my knee and the MRI said that my cartilage was normal, but I had mild bursitis. So, the MRI didn’t detect OA, but the X-ray did, so which one is right? I’m 43, 5’5” and 149lbs.

Hey Jennifer, we are so sorry to hear about your knee osteoarthritis and bursitis. It's more likely that you actually have it than you don't. We suggest starting your therapy program as soon as possible so your mild arthritis does not increase in severity.
