HISTORY OF THE WESTERN MANDINGO BY DJIBRIL TAMSIR NIANE
The history of the Western Mandingos is poorly known. It was only at the beginning of the seventies that historians became aware of the history of their kingdom, Gabou, and its place in that of West Africa. Such a gap is explained by the fate that the colonial division inflicted on this kingdom, divided into three colonial powers: England, France and Portugal.
The origins of the kingdom of Gabou are difficult to determine. To do this, we do not have only the Malinké traditions, but they are unanimous in placing the arrival of the Mandingos around 1240, when Sundiata launched his armies to conquer the West.
This kingdom, however, experienced its true development from the 13th to the 19th century. It then encompassed the upper and middle Casamance region as well as the upper course of the Koliba River.
The final confrontation with the Fulani, in 1867, was fatal to Gabou and caused the fall of its capital, Kansala. One of the first consequences was the triumph of Islam in the region.
But the Fulani victory would be closely followed by the colonial conquests and the partition of Gabou.
This work is the culmination of the research of Djibril Tamsir Niane, professor and specialist in Mandingo history, and author of the story Sounddiata or the Mandingo epic.
