I like pop out beyond the screen 3D ... a lot of newer 3D movies focus on depth... which has its place but I would love to see reviews for beyond the screen/Pop out 3D movies. Most casual 3D fans prefer pop outs. Gimmicks are fun and are meant to be,

Couldn't agree more and I'll go one step further and say that the lack of pop outs in 3d movies is the number one cause of its slow decline. Pop outs got a bad name from earlier 3d's because by focusing only on a sword pointing at an audience the flow of the movie would be interrupted. Most of the 3d directors fell onto the Cameron bandwagon by labeling them gimmicks and gimmicks they were however that's not the case any longer with todays 3d technology. Long story short, whether it be ducking from explosions, racing cars or a flock of birds flying into your living room it's always fun to enjoy the ENTIRE 3d experience with big time pop outs.

I really enjoy watching movies in 3D. I love the immersive feeling. I just got a home theater projector and 3d blu-ray player and watched The Meg in 3d. Excellent use of 3d and got me sold, just finished ordering a handful of 3d blu-rays. I really hope the industry keeps releasing good content.

I live in the States and there are fewer Blu-ray 3Ds being released here every year. That being said, several of the movies that do not get a Blu-ray 3D release here still get released in the UK. A good chunk of those UK releases are region free too (things like the new Star Wars movies or the later Marvel movies for example). I've been importing the movies I really care about owing a 3D version of through amazon.co.uk for a little while now.

  • @WaverBoy
    @WaverBoy ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’d say Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is a way better 3D film than Comin’ At Ya - pretty much all the latter has going for it is extreme 3D. I like it ok on that level, but take the 3D away and you’re left with a third-rate spaghetti western that is paced like molasses, although the music score is a pretty good Morricone knockoff and some of the cinematography is nice. (For a much better 3D thrill ride from the same filmmakers, grab the Kino Blu-ray of Treasure of the Four Crowns.) On the other hand, FSoDG is an excellent Kung fu fantasy flick from HK film veteran Tsui Hark, and would be a fun watch even without the 3D. But in 3D, it’s absolutely fantastic. Brilliant use of the format. Hark made quite a few excellent native 3D action flicks; my fave is Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon. Even better than FSoDG. Astounding. Re: Tron Legacy, it has the weakest, most disappointing native 3D I’ve ever seen. The grid scenes don’t have much more depth than the real world. Agreed on your comments for the rest, especially Dredd, what an underrated 3D flick! Brilliant use of ramped up 3D in certain sequences, unlike Tron Legacy.

Hi there. Just come across your video. I’m always on the lookout for insightful and intelligent commentary on 3D so was really grateful to hear some of your thoughts and opinions here.
As for films you didn’t mention, I think the most obvious suggestion would be the natively shot Hugo which, if you haven’t seen, you really should. And for a post-converted one I think my top choice would be Robert Zemekis’s The Walk. Both great films, both with stunning 3D.
I thought in Comin’ At Ya the negative parallax was sometimes pushed a bit too far and beyond breaking point, but it’s good to see some 80s style 3D where they went hell for leather with the effect - something which the post Avatar era has all too often shied away from. My favourite scene in A*P*E* was the cow jump moment, marvellous. Cheers, Will

Hey, thanks for the comments. I think those of us who still appreciate 3D (when used properly) are the minority at this point. Overall it seems to have been a fad that came and went (just like it did in the '50s and again in the '80s). I'm looking forward to the next resurgence when a fresh generation of filmmakers can use the technology in a new and innovative way. You're right. Hugo is a great pick. I have seen The Walk, but actually never saw it in 3D. That's one I'll have to check out if I ever come across it. Thanks again for watching and for the suggestions.

Had quite an online conversation with crew that worked on James Cameron's Avatar , Every scene in the film was laid out artistically around The Feeling invoked by the watching , They did extensive audience feedback and found that audience connectivity and internal emotional recognition with natural depth perspective correct 3D was over 10 times that of watching the film "flat". used as a woven in form of cinematic expression it is a very powerful storytelling device on so many levels Improving the presentation technology is key .. Avatar 2 is a evolution upon all of these layers , they sat the writers down and reflected upon what internal experiences the audience connected with in the original before they even began work on the story layers of the sequels.

I was able to see the 3D version of JP in a theater and was actually the first time I saw the first JP. I remember telling my friends after that it felt like I was watching a movie that was meant to be seen in 3D. Later I saw a video that talked about the blocking style of Spielberg and how he likes to track movement in an L shape, might explain why it transferred so well.

I didn’t find Beaty and the Beast to be as nessesary a conversion. It was well done but the 2D aspects of that film are so much so that it’s distracting for me.
I don’t have that issue with The Lion King at all. Might be due to the integration of early CGI during scenes like the Wildebeest stampede.

Try used projectors, such as dlp benq 2050, or epson hc 2040/45 or much better 2100/2150. I prefer epson because they have frame interpolation also in 3d (only on 24p input for full resolution 3d) increasing the realism of 3d (for 2d it is controversial, as we know) and making it more comfortable without flickering like a passive screen even on low FI setting, and on FI high strongly reduces tearing of all active systems. I always watch 3d with FI High. My 2 cents…
You can find a used Blu-ray 3d player for 50-70. Glasses for 5-10.
And I’d try nWave cartoons they are the best, and documentaries.

Sorry for late reply, shave off 5" and the 2016 LG G6 OLED came in a 77" model, the last LG OLEDs to include 3D- via lighter Passive Polarised glasses than Active Shutter glasses.
They were widely considered the best 3DTVs before the feature was removed from subsequent year's models by all manufacturers.
Any larger than that, and you're best looking at Projector & Screen.
Like other OLED screens of that era, they are more susceptable to OLED burn-in than recent years models. I have a 55" C6 (curved) that was used for gaming & has pretty bad Red pixel burn-in, and a 66" G6 that is only used for Blu-Ray & Streaming in much better condition, but does have a TH-cam logo burnt in (Red pixels again)

Does your copy of Pacific Rim also have a problem with the 3D in the first 20 or so minutes? I find the first ocean battle makes my eyes go a little crazy, and after pausing it seems like the blu ray has a small vertical alignment issue that fixes itself around 18-20 minutes in. Look for text or clear lines, they are vertically not quite at the same height.

    • @discfunctionalcommentary2775
      @discfunctionalcommentary2775  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I can't say that I ever noticed that on my copy. It could be the TV and 3D setup that I had didn't emphasize that issue if it existed. Unfortunately the 3D television that I had when I made this video had to be retired and they don't really sell 3D televisions anymore. At some point I'll likely invest in a VR headset so that I can use that to enjoy the 3D Blu-rays that I still have in my collection.

@@discfunctionalcommentary2775 I see, still thanks for the reply.
I am actually watching on a VR headset myself (meta quest 3). I must say the 3D effect is quite spectacular in certain movies. If it's done well it's even more immersive in VR, but those first minutes of pacific rim are probably even worse because of it.
I just wish it had a better contrast ratio. It would probably look incredible on the apple vision pro, which has micro-oled displays.

I enjoyed your review. As you liked ‘Ready Player One’ you might also like ‘Alita-Battle Angel’, the latter is also worth watching through a PS4 VR headset - total immersion. One good film from the 50’s is ‘House of Wax’ for simple but great 3D. My personal favourite MCU is “Guardians of the Galaxy 2’. One hard to get is ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ but it hugely expensive as it’s only sold in the Japanese market. I use a projector, not a TV. I believe the 3D effects are more suited to a very large screen. I have some 300 3D bluRays, but living in England it is still fairly easy and inexpensive to build up a good collection.

Hi, this is a belated update to my previous post and some comments. I finally picked up Comin' at Ya! and I'm glad I've seen it, but I found it tiring to be honest. The majority of MCU movies have good 3D and as much as I love Avengers 3D, Dr Strange should have been the focus with Avengers being the honourable mention. Creature is a fun 3D movie and I agree that it really isn't that gimmicky.
Also, just a quick FYI. I enjoyed Crouching Tiger but saying that it influenced anything is a bit of a US centric view. Crouching Tiger was influenced by some 30 plus years of Hong Kong movies and for the most part, the HK movies did it better.

Good point in regards to Crouching Tiger. There certainly are plenty of martial arts movies and centuries of culture that influenced the film. However at the time it was released, it's hard to deny the impact it had on mainstream martial arts films and their overall style.

Honestly thought Avatar wasn't all that great in theaters. The colours were not as bright and vibrant as the home release.

I love Comin' At Ya!, but I HATE that bluray! I hate how they took artistic liberty in making shots black and white and adding neon colors here and there. None of that is in the theatrical cut. You dont own the movie. You own a fan edit.

A other Question: Is there any 3D Blu-Ray out from "Hotel Transilvania
3" ??? And second Question: What the Hell is happen to the 3D Blu-Rays?
Its now so hard to find new 3D Blu-Rays!!! Are this moneygrabbing
Filmcompanies (Sony Pictures, Warner Bros etc.) thinking they dont need
to produce new 3D Blu-Rays only because they think they would not earn
enough Money with 3D?????????????? I produce my owen 3D Pictures since i
was a Child, i am devinitively a big 3D Fan!!!!! And one of the
reasons why some People from the audience say, 3D is not realy a
interesting and good thing, is the fact Hollywood have not all Movies
produced with a real 3D Rig with 2 Cameras. All the Movies they Filmed
with only one Cam and afterwards converted to 3D in the Computer, was
realy bad 3D producing by the audience realy headaches. Jurassic Park 1
was also converted much later to 3D and it was useless. With 3D Films
like this, Hollywood ruined the Reputation of Stereoscopic 3D Films by
the Audience. But all Animated Computer Craphics Movies like Ice Age,
Shrek, Rapunzel, etc. and Films like Avatar, the Marvel 3D Films etc.
who was Filmed with 2 Cams like Stereoscopic 3D Films MUST BE FILMED
(!!!), are so impressive, its so amazing to watch Movies in real
Stereoscopic 3D, Please they dont allowed in my opinion to stop to
producing Movies in Stereoscopic 3D and to sell 3D
    Blu-Rays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm actually not aware of any 3D release of Hotel Transylvania 3. 3D Blu-rays have been getting released less and less frequently over the past several years. If you live in the United States, they practically don't get released at all anymore (except for a few rare exceptions). The reason for this is ultimately about money. 3D as a home entertainment media format just wasn't selling well enough for the studios and other companies to continue to invest in it. However, 3D Blu-rays are still getting released in other countries. I import some of the movies that I have a 3D interes in from the UK. The later Marvel movies and the last couple Star Wars movies didn't get a domestic 3D Blu-ray release, but they were released on Blu-ray 3D in the UK. Those are all pretty easy to find on amazon.co.uk and in the case of Marvel and Star Wars they're usually region-free releases so you don't have to worry about a multi region player. However, even if you are able to find some 3D media, getting a setup to watch them on becomes a separate obstacle. 3D TV's aren't really made any more so unless you have an older model, your only other real option is to get a projector setup. It's too bad, because I am also a fan of 3D and enjoy watching it from time to time. I think you're right though. Ultimately the reason for 3D's downfall probably had a lot to do with the market being flooded. Too many films were getting unnecessary 3D releases and at a certain point, I think people just stopped caring.

@@discfunctionalcommentary2775 i want to add that you can use a ps4 and a psvr headset to watch 3d blu-rays. I think it only displays 720p though and the ps4 pro displays 1080p. With the Ps5 coming out you will also still be able to use the psvr. So its well worth it
