This is what I believe a truly superior opponent should project with their power. 15:12 I have similar feelings on this. The purpose of training should not be to pass the test/exam or to be promoted, but rather the purpose of the test/exam should be to measure a student's mastery of what they are there to learn, and showing sufficient mastery should be rewarded with promotion. I feel that one has not truly mastered either iaido or battōdo (or the one they prefer) until one has mastered both. "-do" in japan means "path". "-justu" in japan means technique or skill. Also the Purpose of battodo's cutting clean that is important if a cut is going to happen, by physics it cuts the atoms clean. I have a fun idea try making the tatami mats move by a machine that mimics the movement of someone moving away from the centerline. Just a idea. To put it simply both Iaido and Battodo does swings from the katana, while Iaido focus on the movements, and the footwork(like evading, advancing, etc.) and Battodo focus on cutting to help trainees make the katana do the cutting and allowing the user to focus on precision on the alignment and placement also slicing in different ways, and finding and using the katana's capability and attributes to the fullest.
For me sword training in what ever style is an exercise in mental relaxation and being precise with a sword. Nowadays using a sword in battle will most likely get one shot before the battle begins. A sword or 7 inch battle knife is a tool that can be used in concert with modern weapons. Before firearms swords were king as was the spear, long ax, broad sword and the bow and arrow. The Katana is light, fast, slim, compact and strong to be a favorite then and now.
Warakiri Battosai is in Fukushimaken? That is where my father's folks are from, makes it more interesting for me to watch Warakiri progress in swordsmanship, he is fantastic. The combination of the styles is interesting too.

Hello, I've understood that Warakiri Sensei studies Iaido of the ZNKR (Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei) and MJER (Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu) as Koryu; however, could someone please enlighten me upon which Battodo federation he is affiliated with ?
One of the recurrent themes in these videos is the concept of budo being a way to achieve peace. But the peace achieved is often through positioning oneself as threatening, i.e. to be so skilled with deadly techniques that any opponent would rather not bring up conflict. As a westerner who has been in contact with pacifist thought, this notion of peace is very alienating. Though having received martial arts training myself, I do understand how the situation would unfold in reality, and how empowering it is. Maybe the attitude of budo at some point will also translate to a form of peace that is not based on threat, but cooperation (for example: one's ideas and the way they see society is so much better that any opponent rather than criticize them or deny them, would rather try them out).
This was stated by chairman of ZenKenKen before a demonstration of Iai at the 1970 World Kendo championships. To quote: It is advisable in advancing in seitei to join one of the many Iaido Ryu. I see no conflict. I am a Yudansha in Iaido, Battodo and Kendo. Licensed in a Kenjutsu Ryu and head a well known Battojutsu Ryu. They are "different" and only compliment each other in small ways. They should be treated as different practice as one bleeding into another will not help you advance at all.
When I decided to take up Iaido I purposely got a Shinsakuto for the very reasons given- also, it was easier to find a Shinsakuto suited to my height! Showa 52, so not exactly brand-new, still not an antique blade which might suffer damage or have hidden flaws which could cause accidents.
Hello Shogo san, one question: What is the best way to convert a katana in Shirasaya mounting to koshirae mounting to practice iai? I understand it probably has to be custom-made because of the unique dimension of each blade being different.
Doing anything from seiza is a non-starter, due to injuries serving in the military. No amount of committment, proper spirit, attitude, or Zen will fix this. It's a physical fact, and no, knee pads are not going to change this. Fortunately I found an Iaido teacher who understands this.
Not meaning to burst anyone's bubble . . . or anything more personal, but . . . I tried San To Ryu and discovered that, due to regionalization, One Piece cannot show Zolo's true technique. The third sword is a butt plug. NOW it makes sense, doesn't it? You're welcome.
