    All of my sealed pokemon boxes I have a selling horizon of 100% gains before I sell them. I've been selling a lot of sword and shield boxes these past months, and already even flipped a lot of my surging sparks. Having dry powder in this hobby to capitalize on opportunities (these days, the opportunities seem to be in the pre-orders) is so important, and I'd say more important than the opportunity cost of holding on a product and saving a few bucks on the exit taxes.

    Then a lot of us in the US will get hit with 28% long term capital gains tax on profits if we sell items we held for over a year? I'll admit I get confused on this, and there seems to be both good and misleading info out there. In a nutshell navigating 1099k reporting, tax advantages of short vs. long term holds, business vs. hobby status, etc.
    Using rough numbers: I bought FS booster box for $150 from Pokemon Center on 01/14/24. If I sell it next year after 01/14/25 for $300, then I profited $150 which means $40 in taxes. Maybe $45 in selling fees, and $20 for shipping. So I'm left with $300 - $40 - $45 - $20 = $195. I still make money ($45) but doesn't feel worth it for the effort.
    If I wait until FS hits $1000 then I net about $440 in profit. Another example may be my ES booster, my total cost is $480, It's worth roughly double. But man taxes, fees, shipping are going to eat up a big chunk of the gains.

    • @Alexc-xn7mw

      Exactly no one talks about these things, yeah your always making money but you need alot of capital to make big gains.

    • @ryanaussi1776
      @ryanaussi1776 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      It's a little trickier than slapping the 28% IRS collectibles long term cap gain tax rate, especially if you have a legal entity you're selling these things under. Income derived from your business purpose (pokemon cards for example) would technically be considered ordinary in nature, thus subjecting you to ordinary tax rates. For some, that's an advantage as the ordinary rate is less than 28% for most households. If you have some semblance of records (tracking inventory, basis, fair market value on items) and keeping tabs on expenses in excel/google sheets, you can easily make the argument that your "hobby" is a business. There are more nuances to that determination, but in a nutshell it's a lot of navigating the tax code and applying what fits to your situation.

    • @marcburch2633
      @marcburch2633 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      I would sell in person and not pay taxes. Rich people barely pay taxes, that’s one of the reasons they’re rich in the first place, we shouldn’t feel bad about it, they won’t even cover your pokemon cards in the event of a fire so I sure as hell am not paying taxes unless I have to. Paying taxes has gotten us nowhere
      Hell even Alex says he has a sales tax certificate to avoid paying taxes, I’m not going to jump through hoops like an animal to avoid paying something every business doesn’t pay. I don’t feel bad, the government doesn’t give out financial support when you need it anyway so what’s the point of paying the tax 🤷‍♂️

    I do think undeniably you’re assuming more risk flipping investments on a short term scale. If you have an appreciating asset, and its value has already exponentially increased since you bought it, it’s much safer to keep appreciating value and hold it. The only downside is you can’t make a ton of money doing this. The cases where cards 100x or 1000x are very rare and in those scenarios it’s an accrued appreciation over the span of decades. There’s pros and cons to both, but I do take the same opinion as you. Thanks for the amazing video.

You end up undercutting the market just to move out of positions, it is a balance. If you invest never to sell, there's no point investing at all.
