Very nice and full garden, lovely. Birds are looking for water. They'd rather poke the fruit for fresh moisture than drink stagnant dirty water out of ponds, lakes and pools. We leave dishes of fresh water in shaded areas and birds are now part of our pest control system. Blessings all.
That's what a lot of folks have been saying, so I did that, too, left two big bird baths. They are still doing it. I cleared off at least twenty tomatoes yesterday. And truly, this is the coolest weather for summer I can remember in 25 years. The way I know is we don't have AC and July is usually unbearable trying to sleep at night. I've got on full pajamas and a cover at night. Very strange. This may be the last big investment of time I'm willing to do for tomatoes.
@@Latebloomershowits beautiful what you've been doing. If you see birds doing this is one thing. But those holes could be worms, slugs, caterpillars too. We've had some kind of caterpillar like things doing this to papaya's, tomato's, and almost ripe bell peppers. Using neem oil once a week helped a lot and DE and crushed egg shells around base of plants.

No, not at all. There isn't an HOA in site. Most people are struggling to keep grass or trying to decide what is best to replace it with as we had drought for 7 years, impossible to keep grass nice here. Hardly anyone wants to do their lawn, and they have the money to pay for a lawn maintenance service. I haven't convinced anyone really to do what I do. They admire what I do, but don't want to put in the work themselves, when they can afford to have someone do their lawn for them. There are exceptions, I'm sure, but I personally don't know any.
I live in the Phoenix area in Arizona and have grown all types of tomatoes for over 12 years now with some good results. I actually stick with more cherry tomato types because they take the heat a little easier. This spring my tomatoes absolutely got demolished by what I thought were little native birds that were slipping in between my netting holes. I caught the culprit one evening and it was a rat and this changed my whole reasoning on the way to attack this problem. I finally had to start putting out rat traps and have caught dozens in just a few weeks. I had no idea we had rats where I was living until they just destroyed every tomato I had on the vine. In the past, this happened to a very small degree and I always attributed it to birds, but nothing like I saw this year. I'm not sure why the infestation of rats in my area, but I am finally getting them under control because some newly formed tomatoes have ripened and were not affected in any way.
And my indigo rose cherry tomatoes were the best tasting cherry tomatoes I’ve ever tasted.! I gave one to the postman and begged me for another to use to shave seeds!

You should try growing sweet potato in the sunniest place you’ve got. Maybe in your driveway next year 😁 I grow the sweet potato slips from store bought sweet potatoes.
Two things: Do you know what variety the passion vine is? Does the comfrey do well in full sun or partial? LOVE your videos and so look forward to seeing each one. You inspire me to do more in my garden than I've done before.

Hi Kaye! Just came in from checking the garden after 2 weeks in Europe and saw your video. Good timing! Looks like all your careful prep helped save most of your crops. Well worth the effort and the few losses! My garden looks pretty good after the warm weather. I spent time moving plants into shade and sprinkler reach, bagged tomatoes before leaving and just lost a few cherry tomatoes. Got to see a Tuscan winery where they use 50 geese for pest control! Not practical in most yards! Also visited the Madrid botanical garden founded in 1755. Lovely place right in the middle of a huge city. Madrid also has wild parrots, sound familiar? 😀

Oh Kaye, sorry to hear your garden was "gotten", as we say here. If I left my garden for a week here in SE TX, it would be decimated! Yours, at least, is still beautiful and continues to put out. I don't know where you got the info. that Indigo Rose tomatoes were full sized, but mine have always been small, slightly larger than cherry size. Yours look the right size. No, it's not, it's redwood, and the man that made the fence (to my design) did not do a great job with the supports, so I step on it gingerly. I think if you want to remove it, you should. I don't know how long it leaches out toxin. I had to use a few in our construction, but they aren't in the garden. Thanks so much for supporting this channel!
Is your cape gooseberry is a Peruvian ground cherry? if it is then usually they fall to the ground when ripe. so look on the ground to see if you can find some yellow berries. if they are still not quite ripe then let them green up in the house. they are in the same family as tomatoes. Hope this helps.
lettuce, beets, spinach, chard, all your brassicas: cauliflower, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, potatoes, leeks, plant garlic in Nov. to harvest in June or so, etc. Hope that helps! Please share this channel. Many thanks!
Not sure if saw your videos before. I have planted my small lot densely but definitely not to your level! Have used dog food bags to extend compost bin as well as planting on driveway. Having amixed result year here too
Yes, it's been interesting and I don't know what to attribute it to. Some things do well, and others do not. I'A lot to do with the weather, which worked to my advantage with the plum tree. I hope you enjoy those videos! I'm happy to see you are using all your space!
Could you put a link to those nifty mesh bags you put over your tomatoes? This year I made a mistake by putting my butterfly garden in the same area as my vegetables, and the worms from the butterfly eggs ate almost everything. The bags would have helped. Next year, the butterflies will be in the front yard instead! But am still going to use the bags just in case. Thanks!

I’m really surprised that a 7 gallon cloth pot isn’t large enough to support a tomato. We had 60 inches of rain the first half of the year so I had to plant all my tomato seedlings in plastic grow bags. I have 62 plants and they’re all at least 7 ft tall and still producing tomatoes. I bought the metal 8 ft stakes that I hammered into the ground. I have fertilized them once a week until the heat became too extreme. I’ve had to be diligent to stay on top of pruning and pest control but even with the heat and humidity they are still producing blooms and fruit. I’ve watched you long enough to know you can achieve anything if you at least try. Hope your trips were awesome. Thanks

Tried everything but all I can do is go out day and night and hope I get to a ripe one first. They have been eating the unripe ones as well! However, when I finally did get to try a ripe one, my goodness! I'm in love with pineapple ground cherries now! Sweet with a subtle flavor of pineapple...

I took heart last week and planted a block of popcorn where I pulled out the sweet corn. If any popcorn comes up, then I will plant some blue lakes to accompany it. I planted a hill of sugar baby watermelons... 75 days to mature. In... mid October! Just hoping... AND I planted some non gmo peanut plants! I didn't know rosemary bushes could die like that! So sorry! I wanna try growing calendula also! I got some watermelons and still have one baby ripening... other melons on trellis, but don't know what they are. All your artichokes look so good! All mine ar le growing slow! One died, and only two others are putting on a head, so far...
Yeah it's wasps climb through and lay eggs or larvae in figs and I don't know if it's particular kinds of figs but if they have a hole in the bottom of the fig wasps female goes in lays larvae and dies in the fig. Maybe do a search on TH-cam bees in figs.
How exciting to come back from a trip and walk around to see what happened while you were gone. I'm so glad the spray worked. Could you share the proportions of the ingredients? I love Aunt Ruby's German Green! I'm growing it this year for the first time. I haven't had success with fennel. I couldn't get it to germinate. But I have lots of swallowtail caterpillars on my dill and carrots and monarchs on the milkweed. Pa. and Md. have had an abundance of butterflies this year. Your corn looks great! If you ever grow cantaloupe, I recommend Amish Melon from Baker Creek. I can usually take or leave it, but this variety is delicious! How do you tell when your leeks are ready to harvest? It's my first year growing them.
Tracy Garns well when they start to bolt they’re ready to reproduce so you want to pull in before then and I’ve always just been told to snap that flower off if I want it to keep getting fatter.
I grow only purple potatoes and Huckleberry Gold now. Sometimes I order potato sets from Seeds of Change and sometimes I just use organic potatoes I buy in store that I let sit around too long. Thank you! Please share!
How is a cape gooseberry from a ground cherry or even a tomatillo? My tomatillos, last year, were empty husks. This year I decided to try them again. Then several volunteers from last year popped up and grew like mad. This year I’m getting fat saladette size delish tomatillos..not sweet though. Salsa verde stuff. Then as I was wandering through Utube, I found a calicam. Site that said tomatillos need more than one plant to flourish and put on fruit. Cross pollination I guess! Maybe it’s the same with cape gooseberries?
I don't know. I just thought the birds were getting them, as once again, I have more plants than I can pay attention to. Maybe. I had one tomatillo plant once and it produced, so I don't know. Spider mites got it.

I heard some insects maybe bees go in a hole in the bottom of figs . not sure I will try to look it up again but similar to what you experienced with your olives.
@@Latebloomershow That's fine but pay attention here: rats are super smart. If you catch one in a snap trap, remove it ASAP before the rest of the family notices. Once rats learn that there's danger, they won't go there. If you leave the dead rat in the trap for more than a few minutes you won't be catching any others. These animals are geniuses. Morgan Spurlock's documentary about rats is an excellent educational source. I watched it on Netflix and it was totally worth it.
Well, in the video previous to this one, I mentioned a blog by a forager who said they weren't, in small doses. That if you ate a LOT it might be. So, use your own caution. I felt no effect from eating either pod. But, I won't be saving seeds as they just get covered in mildew. Not worth it. Thanks for writing.
Hello I have always loved your videos.....suggestion. Cranberry Hibiscus.....give them 4Ft to 6 from wide each....maybe in a row. They will grow and give you delicious leaves to have tea, or eat in salads......
Yes, I had a HUGE one the last two years, beautiful, stunning, featured the flowers in many videos, but something got to the roots and it died. And it was right beside the rosemary, part of which just died, so I'm now concerned about my rosemary. Thanks for watching!
That's Princess Flower. I talk about it in videos from time to time. Originally from Brazil, it was brought to SoCal in the 1930's and you see them everywhere and they bloom most of the year.
I was thinking if you were to train the Luffa Horizontally on the trellis- is it possible. You are lucky to have any tomatoes. Half of my Rose has gone too. but the other half is good. Nice apples and passion fruit there. I like your beet. Will you pickle or boil them and use for salad. The potato and Leek soup can wait a bit longer .O the last rose of summer. Patrick xx
No, and there are CA milkweeds that look completely different. That is Tropical and not native to CA. They love it and I haven't planted any in several years, but did back in 2013 and it just keeps coming back. I have a Gooseplant Milkweed video you should watch, scroll back a year or two in my videos. I'm wearing a pale green shirt in the thumbnail. You will be amazed. I thought for sure it would come back, but it didn't.

Hi Kaye... regarding your rosemary... Root and crown rot can develop on a rosemary plant in heavy, soggy soil, causing the entire plant to die. If your soil is heavy, dig in some sand and organic matter before planting rosemary. Looks like you have a camera person on this video.... nice to walk freely and talking. Okay here in Missouri when folk eat gooseberries they eat them before they ripen. Canned gooseberries are expensive. I have a friend who once make Gooseberry pie. She's the one who told me that gooseberries are used before they get ripe and they're very very very very sour. The amount of sugar she used on that pie makes me wonder why they bother. So that's how they do it where I'm. from

I guess you don't have a Homeowner's Association in your neighborhood? My neighborhood is very picky about what we plant in our front yards. We are not allowed to have veggie gardens .. but I do have some fruit trees.
No, I would never live in an HOA. I believe it's wrong-headed thinking to have manicured lawns that require chemicals and lots of water just to look pretty. But, since you are, make the best of your backyard!

Thyme is a good one. It's pretty and looks kind of like landscaping. You can mix chard into a grouping of cannas or something. Cardemom is another one they would NEVER know it was an edible plant, or at least the seed pods are for spice. The leaves smell wonderful, but I don't if they are edible. You can grow goji berries, aronia berries, the Filius Blue pepper looks ornamental. etc. Good luck!

They grow wild all over the place, and they are edible .. the whole plant is edible .. but the wicked people ruling the earth are LYING TO PEOPLE and saying they are poisonous. No they are not! I have them growing in my yard, and for a couple of years, I noticed the birds were eating the berries .. and they didn't die .. so I finally ate some .. and I'm still alive. They don't want people to know that this FREE FOOD is healthy and can help cure cancer. There are many videos on TH-cam by people saying that they ate Poke berries, stalks and leaves all their lives .. and nobody in their family ever got cancer.

Can anyone tell me how to be sure tomatoes, strawberries and summer squash are clean enough to eat. I have a problem with neighbors who have a dog run complete with lots of poop that are causing flies all over my garden. I garden on the other side of fence from the dog run. I can not enjoy the garden as I am always fighting off flies and knowing the flies have just been enjoying dog poop, how do I make sure my harvest is clean? Those flies carry such disease. Yes we have talked to neighbors and will talk again, HELP!
@@Latebloomershow No, not getting urine on tomatoes etc. I am talking about the flies who are over the other side of fence, landing on dog poop and doing what flies do and then those flies buzzing in my garden. Ugh. Landing on veg that are eaten raw, like tomatoes, etc. How can I make sure the food is clean enough to eat. Filthy flies carry some rather nasty diseases when dining on poop and then coming into garden. What can I use to clean them ?
The only thing I can suggest is to wash well with a vegetable brush and plant based dish soap. Worse case, you have to peel everything. Maybe Google a veggie wash, like with baking soda and vinegar maybe?
Well, a forager wrote a blog about it and said you would have to eat a LOT to bother you, so don't do what I do. I had no effect from the two I ate, but I think I won't eat more, and they get so much mildew, I'm not going to save seeds. Thanks for watching!

I salvaged it next door before they plowed over my old neighbor's place. It's an old heirloom with a perfume scent and a million petals, and it's been such a long time since I had one fully open and look night. They always get something, worms, earwigs, disease, maybe botrytis, IDK.
Wondered how many would mention it. A young college grad of a friend of mine couldn't find a graphic design job and she's interning with me this summer. She helped me with the design of my new website (very clean and simple) at kayekittrell.com, and she's working on my T-shirt (almost finalized!), business cards, shooting videos, and watering my garden when I go away. She's been great and I want to be able to make enough money to keep her on as my assistant. I need help! We shot this video in 2.5 hours. It would have taken me at least an hour longer and been a ton more work.

Yes, a hard year, between the cool weather and critters, and roots in my raised beds (talked about that in earlier video). The days of harvesting 40 pounds of tomatoes in a day (which I did!) seem long ago. Have to have a radical plan for next year. I hope you will keep watching my channel! 😌
Well, as I mentioned in my last video I think when I ate another one, that I read a blog by a forager, and he said that only in large amounts could it be a problem, that in moderation they wouldn't hurt you. Where is your source? I would like to clarify this in a future video. Many thanks!

Very nice and full garden, lovely. Birds are looking for water. They'd rather poke the fruit for fresh moisture than drink stagnant dirty water out of ponds, lakes and pools. We leave dishes of fresh water in shaded areas and birds are now part of our pest control system. Blessings all.
That's what a lot of folks have been saying, so I did that, too, left two big bird baths. They are still doing it. I cleared off at least twenty tomatoes yesterday. And truly, this is the coolest weather for summer I can remember in 25 years. The way I know is we don't have AC and July is usually unbearable trying to sleep at night. I've got on full pajamas and a cover at night. Very strange. This may be the last big investment of time I'm willing to do for tomatoes.
@@Latebloomershowits beautiful what you've been doing. If you see birds doing this is one thing. But those holes could be worms, slugs, caterpillars too. We've had some kind of caterpillar like things doing this to papaya's, tomato's, and almost ripe bell peppers. Using neem oil once a week helped a lot and DE and crushed egg shells around base of plants.

Impressive array of plants! Do you have issues with neighbors who are OCD about having "perfectly manicured" front yards?
No, not at all. There isn't an HOA in site. Most people are struggling to keep grass or trying to decide what is best to replace it with as we had drought for 7 years, impossible to keep grass nice here. Hardly anyone wants to do their lawn, and they have the money to pay for a lawn maintenance service. I haven't convinced anyone really to do what I do. They admire what I do, but don't want to put in the work themselves, when they can afford to have someone do their lawn for them. There are exceptions, I'm sure, but I personally don't know any.
I live in the Phoenix area in Arizona and have grown all types of tomatoes for over 12 years now with some good results. I actually stick with more cherry tomato types because they take the heat a little easier. This spring my tomatoes absolutely got demolished by what I thought were little native birds that were slipping in between my netting holes. I caught the culprit one evening and it was a rat and this changed my whole reasoning on the way to attack this problem. I finally had to start putting out rat traps and have caught dozens in just a few weeks. I had no idea we had rats where I was living until they just destroyed every tomato I had on the vine. In the past, this happened to a very small degree and I always attributed it to birds, but nothing like I saw this year. I'm not sure why the infestation of rats in my area, but I am finally getting them under control because some newly formed tomatoes have ripened and were not affected in any way.
I'm going to set out some traps and see what happens. Although it seems like it's already too late for this year.
And my indigo rose cherry tomatoes were the best tasting cherry tomatoes I’ve ever tasted.! I gave one to the postman and begged me for another to use to shave seeds!

Hi Kaye! Just came in from checking the garden after 2 weeks in Europe and saw your video. Good timing! Looks like all your careful prep helped save most of your crops. Well worth the effort and the few losses! My garden looks pretty good after the warm weather. I spent time moving plants into shade and sprinkler reach, bagged tomatoes before leaving and just lost a few cherry tomatoes. Got to see a Tuscan winery where they use 50 geese for pest control! Not practical in most yards! Also visited the Madrid botanical garden founded in 1755. Lovely place right in the middle of a huge city. Madrid also has wild parrots, sound familiar? 😀

I hadn't thought of that! Haha, I never make floral arrangements, just enjoy the outside, but great idea! Can't believe I got that good rose. All the others were decimated. I did spray, so maybe that saved it.

Yes, my rosemary blooms most of year, but this section just died. Last year my cranberry Hibiscus died nearby. Something got the roots.

Oh Kaye, sorry to hear your garden was "gotten", as we say here. If I left my garden for a week here in SE TX, it would be decimated! Yours, at least, is still beautiful and continues to put out. I don't know where you got the info. that Indigo Rose tomatoes were full sized, but mine have always been small, slightly larger than cherry size. Yours look the right size. I've been growing them for years. What/how are you using the sugar cane? I'm always searching for new ways to use it. Beauuuuutiful shallots!!! Thanks!

No, it's not, it's redwood, and the man that made the fence (to my design) did not do a great job with the supports, so I step on it gingerly. I think if you want to remove it, you should. I don't know how long it leaches out toxin. I had to use a few in our construction, but they aren't in the garden. Thanks so much for supporting this channel!
Is your cape gooseberry is a Peruvian ground cherry? if it is then usually they fall to the ground when ripe. so look on the ground to see if you can find some yellow berries. if they are still not quite ripe then let them green up in the house. they are in the same family as tomatoes. Hope this helps.
I don't know as it was a volunteer that came up in a pepper pot last year. I have been looking on the ground but the lanterns are all empty.

Not sure if saw your videos before. I have planted my small lot densely but definitely not to your level! Have used dog food bags to extend compost bin as well as planting on driveway. Having amixed result year here too
Yes, it's been interesting and I don't know what to attribute it to. Some things do well, and others do not. I'A lot to do with the weather, which worked to my advantage with the plum tree. I hope you enjoy those videos! I'm happy to see you are using all your space!
Could you put a link to those nifty mesh bags you put over your tomatoes? This year I made a mistake by putting my butterfly garden in the same area as my vegetables, and the worms from the butterfly eggs ate almost everything. The bags would have helped. Next year, the butterflies will be in the front yard instead! But am still going to use the bags just in case. Thanks!

I’m really surprised that a 7 gallon cloth pot isn’t large enough to support a tomato. We had 60 inches of rain the first half of the year so I had to plant all my tomato seedlings in plastic grow bags. I have 62 plants and they’re all at least 7 ft tall and still producing tomatoes. I bought the metal 8 ft stakes that I hammered into the ground. I have fertilized them once a week until the heat became too extreme. I’ve had to be diligent to stay on top of pruning and pest control but even with the heat and humidity they are still producing blooms and fruit. I’ve watched you long enough to know you can achieve anything if you at least try. Hope your trips were awesome. Thanks
Well, IF you prune to one vine and keep it topped, it should be fine, but I didn't and these want to tip over.

Tried everything but all I can do is go out day and night and hope I get to a ripe one first. They have been eating the unripe ones as well! However, when I finally did get to try a ripe one, my goodness! I'm in love with pineapple ground cherries now! Sweet with a subtle flavor of pineapple...
I wonder if that's what I have. I could throw some voile over that plant and maybe still get one.

I took heart last week and planted a block of popcorn where I pulled out the sweet corn. If any popcorn comes up, then I will plant some blue lakes to accompany it. I planted a hill of sugar baby watermelons... 75 days to mature. In... mid October! Just hoping... AND I planted some non gmo peanut plants! I didn't know rosemary bushes could die like that! So sorry! I wanna try growing calendula also! I got some watermelons and still have one baby ripening... other melons on trellis, but don't know what they are. All your artichokes look so good! All mine ar le growing slow! One died, and only two others are putting on a head, so far...

Yeah it's wasps climb through and lay eggs or larvae in figs and I don't know if it's particular kinds of figs but if they have a hole in the bottom of the fig wasps female goes in lays larvae and dies in the fig. Maybe do a search on TH-cam bees in figs.

I love Aunt Ruby's German Green! I'm growing it this year for the first time. I haven't had success with fennel. I couldn't get it to germinate. But I have lots of swallowtail caterpillars on my dill and carrots and monarchs on the milkweed. Pa. and Md. have had an abundance of butterflies this year.
Your corn looks great! If you ever grow cantaloupe, I recommend Amish Melon from Baker Creek. I can usually take or leave it, but this variety is delicious!
How do you tell when your leeks are ready to harvest? It's my first year growing them.
Tracy Garns well when they start to bolt they’re ready to reproduce so you want to pull in before then and I’ve always just been told to snap that flower off if I want it to keep getting fatter.

How is a cape gooseberry from a ground cherry or even a tomatillo? My tomatillos, last year, were empty husks. This year I decided to try them again. Then several volunteers from last year popped up and grew like mad. This year I’m getting fat saladette size delish tomatillos..not sweet though. Salsa verde stuff. Then as I was wandering through Utube, I found a calicam. Site that said tomatillos need more than one plant to flourish and put on fruit. Cross pollination I guess! Maybe it’s the same with cape gooseberries?
I don't know. I just thought the birds were getting them, as once again, I have more plants than I can pay attention to. Maybe. I had one tomatillo plant once and it produced, so I don't know. Spider mites got it.

I heard some insects maybe bees go in a hole in the bottom of figs . not sure I will try to look it up again but similar to what you experienced with your olives.
That olive situation wow I use to love olives and now I won't be eating them again that was so gross lol
I'm pleased you were able to keep some of the tomatoes from critters. Very little compares to fresh garden tomatoes.
I think I'm going to put rat traps in the garden and see what I can catch. Someone else in the comments suggested it.
@@Latebloomershow That's fine but pay attention here: rats are super smart. If you catch one in a snap trap, remove it ASAP before the rest of the family notices. Once rats
learn that there's danger, they won't go there. If you leave the dead rat in the trap for more than a few
minutes you won't be catching any others. These animals are geniuses. Morgan Spurlock's documentary
about rats is an excellent educational source. I watched it on Netflix and it was totally worth it.
Also if you catch birds by accident, it's a real bummer.

Well, in the video previous to this one, I mentioned a blog by a forager who said they weren't, in small doses. That if you ate a LOT it might be. So, use your own caution. I felt no effect from eating either pod. But, I won't be saving seeds as they just get covered in mildew. Not worth it. Thanks for writing.
Hello I have always loved your videos.....suggestion. Cranberry Hibiscus.....give them 4Ft to 6 from wide each....maybe in a row. They will grow and give you delicious leaves to have tea, or eat in salads......
Yes, I had a HUGE one the last two years, beautiful, stunning, featured the flowers in many videos, but something got to the roots and it died. And it was right beside the rosemary, part of which just died, so I'm now concerned about my rosemary. Thanks for watching!

That's Princess Flower. I talk about it in videos from time to time. Originally from Brazil, it was brought to SoCal in the 1930's and you see them everywhere and they bloom most of the year.

I was thinking if you were to train the Luffa Horizontally on the trellis- is it possible. You are lucky to have any tomatoes. Half of my Rose has gone too. but the other half is good. Nice apples and passion fruit there. I like your beet. Will you pickle or boil them and use for salad. The potato and Leek soup can wait a bit longer .O the last rose of summer. Patrick xx

That California Milkweed doesn't look anything like the milkweed I have here in Tennessee. Glad to see your corn looking so good.
No, and there are CA milkweeds that look completely different. That is Tropical and not native to CA. They love it and I haven't planted any in several years, but did back in 2013 and it just keeps coming back. I have a Gooseplant Milkweed video you should watch, scroll back a year or two in my videos. I'm wearing a pale green shirt in the thumbnail. You will be amazed. I thought for sure it would come back, but it didn't.

Hi Kaye... regarding your rosemary... Root and crown rot can develop on a rosemary plant in heavy, soggy soil, causing the entire plant to die. If your soil is heavy, dig in some sand and organic matter before planting rosemary. Looks like you have a camera person on this video.... nice to walk freely and talking. I've never collected the seeds! I should go see if they are out there. Not sure this variety has seeds. I got roots from OAG. But YES, I'm interested in selling everything! Almost, haha.

Okay here in Missouri when folk eat gooseberries they eat them before they ripen. Canned gooseberries are expensive. I have a friend who once make Gooseberry pie. She's the one who told me that gooseberries are used before they get ripe and they're very very very very sour. The amount of sugar she used on that pie makes me wonder why they bother. So that's how they do it where I'm. from

I guess you don't have a Homeowner's Association in your neighborhood? My neighborhood is very picky about what we plant in our front yards. We are not allowed to have veggie gardens .. but I do have some fruit trees.
No, I would never live in an HOA. I believe it's wrong-headed thinking to have manicured lawns that require chemicals and lots of water just to look pretty. But, since you are, make the best of your backyard!
@@Latebloomershow .. Yes I agree .. I didn't know better when we decided to live here years ago. I'm trying to learn about edible landscaping, so I can sneak edible plants into the front yard, without the Homeowner's Assoc. noticing.
Thyme is a good one. It's pretty and looks kind of like landscaping. You can mix chard into a grouping of cannas or something. Cardemom is another one they would NEVER know it was an edible plant, or at least the seed pods are for spice. The leaves smell wonderful, but I don't if they are edible. You can grow goji berries, aronia berries, the Filius Blue pepper looks ornamental. etc. Good luck!

They grow wild all over the place, and they are edible .. the whole plant is edible .. but the wicked people ruling the earth are LYING TO PEOPLE and saying they are poisonous. No they are not! I have them growing in my yard, and for a couple of years, I noticed the birds were eating the berries .. and they didn't die .. so I finally ate some .. and I'm still alive. They don't want people to know that this FREE FOOD is healthy and can help cure cancer. There are many videos on TH-cam by people saying that they ate Poke berries, stalks and leaves all their lives .. and nobody in their family ever got cancer.

Only a slow release granular organic fertilizer in the planting hole and occasional fish emulsion during growth. I should do more.
Can anyone tell me how to be sure tomatoes, strawberries and summer squash are clean enough to eat. I have a problem with neighbors who have a dog run complete with lots of poop that are causing flies all over my garden. I garden on the other side of fence from the dog run. I can not enjoy the garden as I am always fighting off flies and knowing the flies have just been enjoying dog poop, how do I make sure my harvest is clean? Those flies carry such disease. Yes we have talked to neighbors and will talk again, HELP!
I don't know. Hope someone else sees this. You can always try row cover cloth. That way, no urine will be sprayed on them.

Ugh. Landing on veg that are eaten raw, like tomatoes, etc. How can I make sure the food is clean enough to eat. Filthy flies carry some rather nasty diseases when dining on poop and then coming into garden. What can I use to clean them ?
The only thing I can suggest is to wash well with a vegetable brush and plant based dish soap. Worse case, you have to peel everything. Maybe Google a veggie wash, like with baking soda and vinegar maybe?

Well, a forager wrote a blog about it and said you would have to eat a LOT to bother you, so don't do what I do. I had no effect from the two I ate, but I think I won't eat more, and they get so much mildew, I'm not going to save seeds. Thanks for watching!

I salvaged it next door before they plowed over my old neighbor's place. It's an old heirloom with a perfume scent and a million petals, and it's been such a long time since I had one fully open and look night. They always get something, worms, earwigs, disease, maybe botrytis, IDK.

Wondered how many would mention it. A young college grad of a friend of mine couldn't find a graphic design job and she's interning with me this summer. She helped me with the design of my new website (very clean and simple) at kayekittrell.com, and she's working on my T-shirt (almost finalized!), business cards, shooting videos, and watering my garden when I go away. She's been great and I want to be able to make enough money to keep her on as my assistant. I need help! We shot this video in 2.5 hours. It would have taken me at least an hour longer and been a ton more work.

Yes, a hard year, between the cool weather and critters, and roots in my raised beds (talked about that in earlier video). The days of harvesting 40 pounds of tomatoes in a day (which I did!) seem long ago. Have to have a radical plan for next year. I hope you will keep watching my channel! 😌

Well, as I mentioned in my last video I think when I ate another one, that I read a blog by a forager, and he said that only in large amounts could it be a problem, that in moderation they wouldn't hurt you. Where is your source? I would like to clarify this in a future video. Many thanks!
