    That was cool!!
    I am currently working on a recumbent tricycle as a project.. Which has to be human as well as electric powered & 2F1R combination. I need all the calculations regarding braking & transmission. Can you please help me...

    that's pretty cool. I didn't know they did things like this. Videos on how they design them would be really cool!

      Videos on the designs to come, including a video with the winning team, which achieved 3,500 mpg last year, and about 2,800 mpg this year!

    I guessed right yesterday, this stuff is pretty cool. Sounds like the petrol cars have 2 stroke engines which seems a bit counter intuitive for fuel consumption.

    Please make more videos of the eco marathon.

    There is a solar car race at Texas Motor Speedway starting on July 19th-22nd then we depart for Austin on a two day road rally, stopping at Waco overnight. Feel free to stop by and support us. Go to www.solarcarchallenge.org/challenge/ for more details.

    You should do a basic performance car video for us starters motivated to get lots of knowledge in a car. Some what the basics of a car and all that but rather than that ykur videos are the best! Hope to listen to a response

    I think they should have to have the engine on all the time and have to be above a minimum set velocity. This will be a better challenge, and then they should give everyone the same amount of fuel (1 gallon seems a good idea!) and send them around the LeMans 24 hour circuit in France. Most laps completed wins

    What do think about the 300 MPG Volkswagen XL1 this isn't allowed in the U.S.?

      Bad for the oil business.
      Tom Ogle was also bad for the oil business. He was killed.

    Hey I just subscribed to your channel. I am going to visit Houston TX next week and was cusious if you would recommend any places to visit for a Junior in petroleum engineering at ULL. I want to trip to be fun and I would really like to learn more about the petroleum field and petroleum engineering.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

      Thanks for subscribing! I'm not very knowledgable on Houston or petroleum engineering unfortunately. Perhaps another viewer can help you out!

      ***** Bechtel is one of the top companies in the construction/engineering industry in the U.S. That would be great to get a chance to work for them.

      Thanks Mr. Neild, I actually just submitted my resume Bechtel for an internship. I'll have to pass by their office in Houston and see if anything develops, thanks again!

    I'm curious was anyone running an adiabatic engine or forced induction like a flywheel supercharger?

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No forced induction; probably too much added weight, with no real benefit for such low power requirements.

    • @ghettoflyer
      @ghettoflyer 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flywheel superchargers use the vehicles existing fly wheel as a supercharger by sealing it and creating an air intake at one side of the flywheel and outlet to the intake of the engine 180 degrees opposite the intake ( no weight is added) creates about 1 lb boost per 1k of rpm. They were originally patented in in the 1920's and last year the Ford rally team tried to incorporate one in their rally car in addition to the turbo ( but was not allowed to race) An adiabatic engine is made by super heating the fuel to the point of it becoming steam allowing the engine to run super lean 36:1 air to fuel ratio ( some estimate as high as 44:1 is possible with EFI) Standard car A/F is 14:1 which means only 25-30% of the fuel is burned and the rest come out the tail pipe ( Hence why we need catalytic converters). Where as an adiabatic engine burns 75-80% of the fuel making more power with less fuel, and a catalytic converter is not needed.

    The shape of each vehicle is pretty much aerodynamic design to decrease the fuel consumption. But that SPS vehicle (DeLorean DMC-12) doesn't look like it's designed that way. I wonder how well they did in this completion.

      They were having some fun with it. I've got an interview with that team actually, just checked the results and they had 72.5 mpg.

    Just imagine if we had cars like this for production. We would take a lot longer to use up the rest of the oil, but fuel would get more expensive so oil companies could stay in business.

    • @CncObsession
      @CncObsession 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are a creative bunch. Even if we use up all of the available petroleum reserves, we will come up with other forms of energy.

    • @berkaycagl3161
      @berkaycagl3161 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SamSheepDoq well most of them go around 30 km/h for a great efficiency

  • @FM4AMGV

    entirely useless. they should have design constraints of accommodating 2 adults and 2 children, hold average grocery amounts and be capable of over 60mph. not to mention a minimum average speed

  • @Rufeo0
    @Rufeo0 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mmm I question the helpfulness of this. It should be brought more in line with real life. This could easily be done by having a section they have to meet a minimum 30mph speed limit and then come to a complete stop inside a box on every lap.

    To me this thing is a bit lame, to be realistic a minimum speed need to be decided.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well they have to cross the finish line in a certain amount of time, so they ultimately can't go super slow (average speed has to be above 15 mph).

    Cutting the engine seems like cheating, it's to see who is more fuel efficient not who can roll the furthest without using the engine at all. Just my 2¢

    • @CncObsession
      @CncObsession 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The object of this event is to obtain the highest mileage. Do it any way you want.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Who can roll the furthest is who creates the least amount of drag and friction in the system - this is how you get good fuel economy on the road (aside from the engine).

    • @bratvlad
      @bratvlad 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Engineering Explained would you say than all wheel drive viehcles on the road have more amount of drag and friction because of more moving parts?

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, they have significantly more frictional losses.
