  • Make a cabriole leg in 5 minutes using this special trick and router hack.
One place you can purchase the over-sized door knobs:
3" Wooden Ball Knobs / Doll Heads
    www.amazon.com...
    TIP:
Keep in mind, the router bit extension is NOT required. If you make a slightly smaller dome (1/8" or 3/16" less tall), you can raise the router bit high enough to line up with the top of the dome. And you can simply screw the dome to the router plate.

This is one of the slickest ideas I've seen in many years. Congratulations 👍

I started my career as a chairmaker. For six years I specialized in constructing Queen Anne chairs. Our shop had a similar fixture for the router, although we didn't use it for the cabriole legs. We used it to quickly remove material from the top portion of the stiles (back legs). The stiles were still shaped with a spokeshave. The router was just used to reduce the labor. We did have a very different router fixture for reducing the labor on the cabriole legs. I stopped using it before too long because I got fast with spokeshaves. I used to do bigger production runs (twenty four chairs was my biggest) and I got very fast using the spokeshave to do the deed. I don't dislike your idea, but you and your viewers shouldn't fear using the spokeshave so much. With practice it gets easy. Not using the spokeshave is a little too much like timid driving, making three, safe right turns instead of one confident left. Don't saw that ball like that. Your opposed rotation is better than nothing, but still a bad idea. I can think of lots better ways.

That was useful thanks. I'm using doughnut bushings for something different, but that gave me more fuel for the project.

Hi Andrew, I received the gift card in the mail on Monday. Thank you for providing an opportunity to win! I really like your idea and would like to try it sometime. Thanks again! Eric

A great, "think piece," video. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, some folks will never understand the value of sharing and idea for it's own sake, without regard to it's operational value. The idea of putting a round over bit on top of a cut off spheroid is fascinating to play with and may cause me to have lots of other great ideas.
In fact, the spoke shave guy already reminds me that only an afternoon or two's dedication to a hand tool is often actually faster for the home woodworker so I got double value already!
Curious though, did you ever think of a better was to make those egregious cuts on that sphere? That'll make good watching.

Good God man! How do you have fingers! How about a video on shop safety and how to keep your digits! The only tool you didn't misuse was the sander!

I have my fingers because I practice generally accepted safety practices when using shop tools. The distance to keep your hands away from the machines: Band saw 2", table saw 4", jointer 4-6", router 2-4", miter saw 4". Of course the list of other safety guides goes on and on but it's all about focus. If you want to keep your hands further away, then so be it.

That’s just too scary mate. For one, you’re running on the wrong side of the router bit in your video and if the stock catches you’ve got a dangerous missile. 😲

I like to buy stuff at garage sales like this, for a dollar or two. I haven't completely cleaned up my shop yet. I've had so many projects, but this year has been productive but I have a lot left to do.

Yea OK, you still cut it out the same way everyone else does, then you sanded it, then you shaped it on the router ball AND then you had to sand it again. You added an extra step with the second sanding. 5 minutes my ass!

    • @HeavyboxesDIYMaster
      @HeavyboxesDIYMaster  7 ปีที่แล้ว

In the video, I make it clear that is a proof of concept and is the first time I did it, so it's hardly in 5 minutes. The sanding in the video was actually about 1 minute (off screen). With practice, it should go down to 20 seconds. I would have to do about 10-20 of these before I could even get it down to 5 minutes. The band saw step is suppose to be fast but I don't have a lot of band saw experience. At the end of the video, I break down the steps by time. I'll be making a coffee table with cabriole legs and I'll be actually attempting to see how fast I can make them. Don't forget to subscribe so you can see it in action in the future.

You have the messiest work area I've ever seen (seen at the 3.20 minute mark on the video). That makes for a very dangerous work environment. Combine that with your dangerous, care free router method, and you're just asking for a bad shop accident to happen.
