    All I can say is WOW! This home was in rough shape :/. Police and fire were both involved in getting this work done ASAP. During their initial visit, the electrical inside was untouched... otherwise, the disconnect would have been immediate upon discovery.

      hey, just wanted to say: no.1 check we are at the right location. something the police in my country could better heed! 😂 i had to 'invite' them in earlier looking for a fugitive. they told me he'd given them this address. well, i'd like to believe them but i saw my neighbour later, asked her how she was and she said the police were round looking for her son....

      That's been around for many years, especially in Ontario. When my Mom bought her place nearly 40 years ago, the first water tank, which was electric, was not a rental. When it broke down, she had it replaced by a gas water tank and the new one is a rental. Nice considering that when they break down, the owners just come and replace the tank ASAP without cost to the customer.

    Good spotting on those insulators. I may have mentioned once before, my work is all about researching insulator performance. Part of it is tracking failed insulators.

    • @Bobsdecline
      @Bobsdecline  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Interesting! I don't remember seeing that comment in the past.
      Have you seen much on the newer plastic insulators? From what I've been told an additive to the plastic should prevent UV damage that led to inevitable failure among our early plastic models.
      We've recently switched back to plastic and use mostly epoxy type on all dead end and equipment.

    • @TimothyShaw
      @TimothyShaw ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Bobsdecline My work mostly focuses on 69kV and above, so those polymer insulators are made differently than the distribution class epoxy designs. I'm aware of some failures, but I haven't heard that there is widespread concern. The focus of the distribution voltage research seems to be on other equipment at the moment.

I always thought those linemen workin on the transmission lines way out, with faraday suits, that stuff was crazy! Kinda wanted to try it once. They use a heli iirc. Im happy im done with ladders, bucket trucks, and old rotted poles now tho!
    Be safe out there, never had a 'big' arc myself. Only saw the aftermath from a melted 25/30k xformer and a few switchgear.

    One trick I use when coiling up wire no matter the size: your off hand holds the end, then use your dominant hand to measure out a certain length. Bring your hands together, and use your fingers to roll the wire inwards. It will naturally form a loop. Transfer the loop to your off hand, then measure out another length and repeat. The end result should be neatly coiled wire that should be easy to control.

    Yes, very important to remember that cutting one wire still lets the village come around on the other.
    The downguy/anchor and a line/wire on the other side - I like to think of that as "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." And also "A body at rest tends to stay at rest, unless acted upon by a force." And we want that pole to stay at rest.

      We had something similar when building a factory in a poor area
      I think it was a substation but not sure on the terms. We had to get our electricity directly from a 400kV line due to the intended power draw of the factory (4 arc furnaces, 8 hydraulic presses, a few dozen lathes, a few dozen mills and some electro-chemical processing stations) and so we had to designate a space for all the equipment to get... 400 volt iirc. It was the first thing built due to safety rules and so stood there while the foundation for the factory was being built.
      I was shocked at how many people went into that area between it being built and us having to put up more security between then and the factory being fully built and staffed (3x 8 hours shifts every day, even christmas)

      I was wondering the same thing. Thought it would have been blanked over at the least. Seems like a very competent and safety focused lineman, so must be a reason he didn’t.

    At least they put electrical tape over one of the bare wires. Maybe they ran out of tape or figured 1 out 3 is fine. Odd someone would steal a panel, but there are people who seek out various models for replacement parts. Or maybe the copper inside, but is there really enough to make it worth taking. Bizarre.

      Having that one exposed line would have made pulling the panel tub off the conduit a sketchy endeavor.

    Hi Bob, the emphasis on safety your videos are incredible. Love you outlining what is or is not proper procedure each opportunity along the way. Thanks!

    What's the trick to pulling the meter out of bases? Last week we had a situation at work where someone plugged in a meter to cover some exposed lugs because they couldn't find a meter cover (despite my ability to find 5 of them in a minute). Of course, when I pointed it out, we tried to pull the meter off and it would not come off - it was stuck in there good. It eventually took some extreme prying with screwdrivers and even a square before we could get enough grip to pry the meter off. Seemed like a lot more effort than should be needed...

      About 45years ago, we were trained to pull meters, as part of being in the fire service. (this is no longer done) The key is to pull down and roll it out. You are basically trying to pull only one set of contacts at a time with that rolling motion.... assisted by a few slaps with an open palm. BTW, I would not recommend untrained people do this. My job was as a safety instructor to make sure the fire scene was safe for the guys inside the building.

      Sometimes it's reused, otherwise it goes into a recycling bin at the office.

    In the current housing market, I bet someone would buy that trailer as is for 50K and then try to flip it. I saw one in as rough shape without all the junk outside on a real estate website asking 85K a few months ago

      I was looking at trailers in my area just for fun, holy crap they're going for like 200k now lol. That's more than what I paid for my house in 2009. Houses are going for like 300k, some even half a mil. Complete insanity. I'm glad I bought when I did since I would not be able to afford it if I was in the market now.

      Same here! 200k for a trailer on a rented lot 😔. Tough for young families just getting into the market. Beyond tough actually.... Easily a %200 jump overnight
