  • Bar down, celly, top shelf? Our Swedish was a little rusty, so ahead of today's #NHLGlobalSeries game, we asked Gabriel Landeskog & Fredrik Claesson for a little help translating English hockey lingo into Swedish.

    • @ivanmolero7829
      @ivanmolero7829 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@filmtajm35 The word "back" in Swedish, is a loanword from English. It comes from Association Football terminology, where there are centre-backs, right-backs, left-backs, wing-backs etc. Försvar has nothing to do with "first answer" (första svar), the same way as defence, in English, has nothing to do with removing fences.

    • @palazie5274
      @palazie5274 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, we have a lot of different dialects in sweden, so wide spread of our language that it almost can be hard to understand one another if you're from different parts of sweeden.

    • @BlueSwede92
      @BlueSwede92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ones that are wrong aren't dialectal words, if that's what you mean, they are just translated out of context.
      "Straff" means "penalty shot" in hockey, it means "penalty" in football ("soccerr" if your North American) and in the general, non-sport related sense.
      "Straffsparksläggning" is also the football term. Like he says "spark" means "kick" so it makes no sense in hockey. You can say "straffläggning", like he says, but "straffar" ("penalty kicks/shots") is the most common word for "shootout" in both hockey and football.
      "Översta hyllan" is, like he says, a literal top shelf. It isn't used in hockey like the English term is.
      "Bar" means a bar where you order drinks. "Bar ned" doesn't make any sense with "bar" as a noun. (By coincidence, "bar ned" actually means "carried down", as in "I carried the TV down to the basement".)
      "Dingla", like he says, means e.g. dangling from a rope.
      "Skönhet" does mean "beauty" in both the sense "the quality of being beautiful" and "something or someone beautiful", but I think that except in certain idiomatic expressions it has a poetic or archaic sound, and it sounds a bit ridiculous to use it in hockey. For a beautiful goal you would use the adjective "snyggt", which means "beautiful".
      "Köttkvarn", like he says, it means a literal meat grinder.
      "Sås" means sauce that you put on your food.

    It's fun to do some Claesson style translations in reverse.
    "McDavid has a lot of Finns in his face, and he's played together with some acne on the Oilers.
    "I'm poison to my wife, and it's dangerous to drink married. Anyway, I don't want to live in celibacy like a donut, and it's nice to have someone to share a glass of milk and a monk with in the evening. Also, we have great six, sometimes sex times a night. She is just corpse me when it comes to that stuff, I just hope she doesn't kill me in my sleep so I become a like".

      @@Dead25m Det är inte Landeskog som får fel för det. Avsnittet går ut på att producenterna har översatt engelska hockeytermer till svenska med hjälp av något liknande Google translate för att se hur många rätt de får. Landeskog och Claesson rättar bara till felen som har blivit i översättningen. Så resultatet med fel/rätt gäller alltså hur många rätt översättningarna fick från början och det är således inte Landeskog eller Claesson som tror att top shelf är översta hyllan på svenska utan Google.
