  • In this video we give 10 reasons to NOT retire in the Philippines & ONE major reason that you SHOULD retire in the Philippines.
DISCLAIMER: We enjoyed the Philippines. We would not retire here because of the reasons listed. We lived here for 3 months and this is our 3 month review of what we experienced. No disrespect to filipinos and their culture. Just observations and opinions.

This reminds me of 1993 when my girlfriend (now wife) took me home to meet her parents. I was in Culture Shock! ... I did realize once I got to her island, Guimaras, in the Province, it's day and night difference from Manila. I hate Manila. But, over the past 31 years, and the many, many trips we went home, it's where I will live the rest of my life.
You're not wrong, about what you discussed, but of a country of over 7000 islands, I'm surprised you kept going to major cities. I have always described Manila as Harlem, and I would never consider spending more than a day there again (since my 2 weeks in 1993). But, the Philippines is a poor, third world country and like most of these types of countries, you just have to realize that they are doing the best that they can.
Did you not go to a SM? Or to a Mall, like the Mall of Asia? I have found no problem finding aircon, nice grocery stores, great food. But, I was lucky to have my girlfriend and her family with me to show me around. And, I think with my mind on the people, It's easy to look past their impoverishment and realize that the Philippines exists despite hundreds of years of being occupied by Spain and Japan, to being some of the most hospitable people in the world. There are plenty of videos online that talk about the Tabo and the CR, (No TP) and the conditions of street food and water. The reason you don't see TH-camrs promoting the slums (usually) is because those kind of videos don't get the views.
Maybe I should go through Los Angeles and San Francisco and show off the homeless, drug addicts lining the streets, shitting on the sidewalks and post these as to why I don't want to live in California anymore. Trust me, the US has a lot going wrong with it and where the Philippines has only gotten better over the years, the USA is headed in the wrong direction.
Bottom line, I respect you for making your video and I also thank you for twice asking for forgiveness from the people that you don't intend to disparrage their way of life. This fact that your money can go far (usually, only in Rents and Labor) is because they are so desperate to earn some money. They're poor. They're over populated. But, here in California, you can't swing a stick in a hospital and not hit a Filipino nurse or doctor. The window washing thing happens in the US too, and the guy that finds a spot for you to park is working, not begging. It's not a scam ... he shows you were you can park without getting a ticket. I've never had to deal with the cops, other than LTO, but again, I would blame that more on the City than the Filipino. Cities suck, period. In California I stay away from them. In Texas, I stay away from them. In the Philippines, I stay away from them.

Brother I echo everything you just said. I was born and raised in Calif. and I can tell you the only difference between L.A. and Manila is about $10,000 USD cost. Both are equal shit holes of humanity.

I'm in 100% agreement with you TitoBear, my wife is from the province as well, Iloilo near Passi City. Enjoyed my time on her family's farm the many times I've been there, but then again I grew up in the country myself and never liked the city, here in the USA or the Philippines. We'll probably move to the Philippines soon as well and hunker down for the world collapses.

Hmm, interesting take on the Philippines. I would be interested to hear where in the three areas you mentioned, that you chose to stay and visit. All of the things you described are able to be found in the Philippines, but it perturbs me that you portray the whole country, or even all sections of the city as like xxx. To find the slum areas you showed in your pictures, you have to seek them out and those would NOT be areas where your B&B rentals are found. Yes there is crushing poverty, but not in most places, yes there is putrid trash and uncleanliness, but not everywhere.
It is completely unbelievable that you researched the Philippines before you went there - sorry if it upsets you, but I'm "calling you out on that". Travel books, guide books, online travellers, they all talk about the poverty and the conditions, I do not believe you could have visited any of those places and not been aware.
Traffic - it is congested and a majority of the local traffic is motorcycles, whether city or provincial. There are rules, and there are driving conventions, but you need to be alert all the time. If it was not sprawling highways and land intensive motorways that you might have expected, well wake up Gertie, you are in a developing country.
The heart was too much? I thought you researched the country before moving there "to live" (lol) It's a tropical country darling, that means hot and muggy. I know many people that have lived for years in Manila and live that entire lifestyle without leaving airconditioned malls, homes, shops and recreation. There is elitist lifestyles in the Philippines just like any place, that you didn't find any in your brief three month trip is amazing. You claim you lived in Manila, no Greenbelt?, no BGC? No Ayala? were you really in Manila (NCR) or were you trying to camp out in Tondo or the back streets of Paranaque, or Quezon City at the cheapest place you could find. Yes you can find terrible rundown areas, just the same as you can in LA, San Fransisco, Boston, or New York. People sleeping in those streets in ALL those American cities, eg just couple blocks off Rodeo Drive, so your comparison is a bit off. As for not being able to find your favourite super sized 10kg box of sugar and GMO garbage calling it cereal, I could say you don't look as if you went short. Maybe S & R didn't cross your radar.
City transport in Manila, has hundreds of buses, jeepneys, motorcycles, Mass Transit trains, taxis, and if you can afford, fleets of airconditioned limousines and town cars, but a) you need to open you eyes, and b) it really helps -as a newbie - if you use your high skills as a communicator, to ask people to introduce you to the system. (Sorry, I know sarcasm is low level wit).
I am sure you meant well, but this video, indicates to me, that you failed to research, failed to communicate, and failed utterly to experience any sort of a spectrum during your 30 day jaunts in 3 cities in the Philippines.
Lastly, you said you were very unlikely to return, and I can understand that. Inexperienced travelers are often disturbed when places they visit are not the same as their beloved home, in the same way as the people you visit are often shocked by the brash complaining tourists that tromp through their world. Based on limited information in your videos, I would think unsuited for travel, unwelcome most places you go, and happily seen off at the airport. Add to that not suitable as a travel vlogger, and that about sums it up.
Something positive - next time, or place, try chatting up vloggers BEFORE you plunge in, and get them to introduce you to people who can guide you properly so you get the whole picture. If not? well I'm not your teacher, but Karen & Ken's travel troubles is an unfilled niche.

You are very wrong about seeking out the poverty. The philippines doesn't hide its poverty like other SE Asian countries. Even Makati and BGC doesn't hide it. I've been there over 25 times. I plan to live there next month. I found an island where the poverty is livable and somewhat of a good infrastructure and if you think i am going to let that cat out of the bag, your smoking crack.. Aircon? you go out for a 1/2 day in some areas to run errands and you may not have Aircon the entire time sweating like a pig and getting dehydrated to the point you are sick. (been there done that) Some of the things they are spot on and some exaggerated. The best way to see the country is on Scooters. But understand, if you are out of the metroplex and need t a ride down the street, sitting sideways on a trike is about as unsafe it can get. Try getting into a Jeepney with a backpack at 6'2". nearly impossible not to hit people all the way to you seat. Most areas outside of Manila don't have Grab or taxi's. That leaves you will renting something or the local transportation which is very hot in a jeepney. You watch on TH-cam how cute it is to use the public transportation until you have to use it. The train system is really useless for travelers. It doesn't go very far. The food can get you sick as a dog. I wanted to die standing up from one visit from the food.
The best way to visit there for travelers that want to see the real Philippines is to go to a popular island and just be a tourist if you don't plan to live there. You will find the people as friendly as any place in the world. There ya go, Have a nice Day!

Great comment. Being in the service and traveling all over the world, one of the biggest tips for folks I can offer is this. Whenever I would get to a place that I knew I was going to be staying for a while, I would get a taxi. I would tell the taxi driver that I wanted to see the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly of the surrounding area. They would normally take me to places I wouldn’t mind being in, places that I wouldn’t want to be in, and places that I needed to steer clear of. It was a small price to pay for my safety, and my guys and gals safety. Heck, the taxi driver would show me where to eat, shop, and for any scams to look out for. They see, hear, and know what’s going on. It saddens me that folks go to these countries, expecting everything to be easy, and the same as the U.S.A., get discouraged right out of the gate, and really don’t give the people, the area, the region, or the country a chance. There is poverty everywhere. There is filth everywhere. Every culture is different, but there are beautiful places, beautiful people, wonderful food, and wonderful cultures everywhere. You just need to open your eyes, ears, mind, and heart to experience them. All of the issues these two mention in this video are issues we have right here in the U.S. From the racial profiling to the food insecurities, to the homeless approaching, to the scams. It doesn’t only apply to the Philippines, or Asia, it’s in every large city, in every country.

Came from Old Dog's channel - Old Dog New Tricks. Sounds to me like this is your first time trying to live in SE Asia. I had a similar reaction coming straight from the US during my first year in Thailand - food poisoning from street food, going to the hospital looking pregnant my abdomen was so bloated, and being told my symptoms were psychosomatic by the "doctor" while I was concerned about dying from sepsis. Took some time for me to adjust and now I love SE Asia and I have great respect for the people and culture. I would have made the same video you did after only three months. Perspective is everything and you folks simply haven't been in SE Asia long enough to appreciate the differences between there and the US. Could have named your video "Culture Shock."

That’s my country and living in the US for 50 plus years will retire once I reached 62 and enjoy traveling all over the Philippines and hanging out with all my relatives in Manila as well as in my Bicol province. In America 🇺🇸 (80) percent is unaffordable for retirement. That is why over (19,000) Americans live in the Philippines 🇵🇭. Thousands more in other countries. Now as a widower, my children are grown and have children too. Dad has to retire where his retirement can go far. Like you can hire a full time maid for ($150) a month. And also there are big grocery stores and plenty of good restaurants in the Philippines if you know how to look. America has as many problems and problem areas, what they don't have is the population density : 91 people per sq mile in the US 1010 people per sq mile in the Philippines. That puts a different perspective on things, especially if you come from and live the life of the entitled - though you would not know it to look at the Miss Madam here on this channel. So more trips and time visiting different islands and traveling with her and I knew this is where i was going to retire early to. I saw this video as Humorous and Laughed with it not against the people and even my girlfriend admitted she chuckled. It might be truthful but a Shame they did not see the Beautiful parts or were to busy seeing the bad. I guess a person can see it as a ruined day for one incident and another can see it as a great day with a slight glitch. It is ALL in perspective as to how you see it. Yell "I Love you" at your dog or spouse and they may run away as tone and the way you say it is just as important as what you say.

Here from the Paul Old Dog channel. Paul says it best. If you have watched his channel he addresses a lot of what you put out minus the slums. Some of the youtubers sugar coat it yes, but you are the polar opposite. Way to critical. I stayed there 4 months with my wife in Angeles city and I had a great time. I have been living here for more than 2 years and can say your video is far from true or shows an utter lack of research before coming here. No, it is not dirty and full of trash everywhere. There are a few rare neighborhoods that are like that but the majority of places are quite clean. Maybe you just visited the poorer sections of Tondo, but that in no way represents the Philippines. Supermarkets have great selections of food. If you did any research before coming you would of known that driving in the Philippines is not recommended. I could go on but all in all a horrible video. Cheese! I have visited on vacations in the Visyas region, central islands, around Dumaguette in Negros where many vloggers live and love that area. (Paul old dog recommended your video). I avoided the larger cities where most of those negatives exist but these things are still true to a lesser degree in the smaller towns. Vloggers living there may deemphasize these negatives to avoid bad feelings w the locals but for them the pros still outweigh the cons. I have spoken w a couple of them in person and the central Phils is their choice over other countries: Pros being low costs and friendly traditional english speaking culture. They also are fine w the heat but many live at higher, cooler elevations still close to towns. Its no surprise they love it or they wouldn’t stay there, but its good to have your take as a reality check, especially if in the larger cities. I would avoid Luzon like the plague. too crowded , polluted and corrupted near Manilla as far as Im concerned. Cebu better but still too crowded.

Brought here by Old Dog's TH-cam channel. I have lived in the Philippines for 5+ years. I believe that your take on the Philippines is accurate. Poverty, cleanliness, corruption, food, infrastructure, and the traffic are accurately portrayed in this video. However, there are other parts to the Philippines that are big advantages to me. Most especially, I have met a partner that is the love of my life. Outside of the cities, the land and sea are spectacular. I love it here. However, I am moving back to the US because as a 70 year old, I am concerned about the medical infrastructure here. I don't believe that the US medical system is the best in the world. But, it is better than the Philippines and at my age this becomes more important. I will always have fond thoughts of the Philippines and am lucky enough to bring my partner back to the US, she is the best part of the Philippines!

Instead of a Vacation it was more an education and life changing experience. I remember driving thru Manila at sunrise and I’ll never forget the stuff I saw that was just jaw dropping. Entire Family sleeping in the medians or parking lots, little infants wondering up near the busy street alone and naked and begging at all the stop lights. It really moved me and I think about it often. I wanted to help but I was just some guy in a taxi passing thru. I was sad watching this. Even a small amount of research would start to prepare anyone for what a developing country is like. There is a big difference between coming over her to live vs. staying in a 5 star resort in El Nido. I am a little confused with why someone would expect something different. My hope was that by the end of the video, you were going to say the one positive reason to retire here was the Filipinos and their incredible generosity and friendliness. (But yes, I also am thankful for the exchange rate on a personal level, but as you allude to, there is a direct link between the exchange rate and the poverty.) I guess for some of my fellow Americans like myself, it has been all about the adventure and experiencing how the other half of the world lives. As much as you tried to be apologetic with the "we mean no disrespect", it felt very condescending. However, I also also want to fully admit that when I visit back to the US, I am filled with mixed feelings of completely enjoying the standard of living I grew up with....and the disdain for so much entitlement and blind privilege.

I have returned to America, after a 6-week visit to the Philippines in Sep-Oct 2023. My plan was to retire in the Philippines, that is why I stayed there for 6 weeks. After what I have seen in the Philippines, I am NO longer so sure about retiring there. Here is a short summary why:
    1) In the United States, the greater majority of dog-owners "scoop the poop" of their dogs when those dogs defecate on the streets. In the Philippines it is the OPPOSITE. Most Filipinos do NOT "scoop the poop" of their dogs on the streets in Metro-Manila. I had to clean the soles of my shoes 2-3 times a week, because many of the streets were littered with dog feces.
    2) Many of the streets in Pasay City were narrow and had NO sidewalk. I was at the mercy of being side-swiped by passing cars and motorcycles, while I tried to avoid the dog feces on the narrow streets.
    3) The air pollution in Baguio City and Metro-Manila hit my lungs hard. I developed a cough, while my lungs tried to detoxify from the air pollution.
    4) Widespread business fraud, inefficiency and incompetence, in Baguio City and Metro-Manila.
    5) Searing heat from the weather. I was wearing shorts and short-sleeve shirts to cope with the heat in Metro-Manila. Still the level of heat was often punishing.

Another Old Dog visitor, I have been to many countries including the Philippines. Certainly Manila is a difficult city to travel in, there are nice areas like Makati and BGC. My girlfriend at the time was a nephrologist there and lived quite well. Poverty exists in America, Africa, and America. It’s sad when people have nothing. Sanitation standards in Guatemala, parts of Jamaica, Kenya, Fiji, Thailand and the Philippines are shock to a middle class American. There is good everywhere and the Philippine people are mostly great. Different strokes for different folks. I prefer Bangkok, one of the most modern cities around. But I’m not on a small budget. Thanks for sharing. I've been to the PI many times and met my wife there. I agree with most of your opinions especially if you are talking about major cities. ALL of the Philippines is not that bad, even Manila has BGC which is every bit as nice as the nicest city in the US. Also, it's not 100 degrees everywhere there either. My wife and I stayed in Tagaytay where the temperature was in the 70's and 80's and actually gets chilly some days. Any higher elevation there is quite refreshing just need to get away from the cities. One point that I did not agree with was your grocery store comments. The SM mall grocery stores are identical to the ones in the US with wide aisles and great variety of food, also air conditioning. John is a brave soul to drive a car there which I've never done. We just use the Grab app and let the driving to them. Never had a problem and it's very inexpensive. We stay in Baybay City Leyte when we visit, and it is so beautiful there. Sure, there is some poverty but nowhere near the major cities and the roads and streams were trash free, hardly any traffic, nice restaurants and food vendors barbequing chicken everywhere. Awesome seafood restaurant called the DannMar Venue and Tuna Grill which is one of the best fresh seafood places I've ever eaten. I've never gotten sick there no matter where I've eaten but Thailand almost killed me a few years back. I also have never been scammed in Leyte but many times in Manila. It's a different experience there as well when you have local family to take care of you. I love the Provinces in the Philippines, but I don't think that I could retire there either. Nice place to visit for a month at a time but I'm ready to go home after that.

These malls are as nice as any in the U.S. it has air conditioning! Traffic is bad, but take a taxi or trike and enjoy the view. Our hotel ($35/night) had AC and hot water. Been here almost one year and I can agree with each subject matter of this video. However, there are mitigating tactics or hacks for many of the plights mentioned. If you happen to find your dream location in the Philippines you might have to bring your own AC and hot water heater or maybe not. I've learned to keep it moving if I happen to be in an area where the beggars are highly populated. I travel with disinfectant wet wipes when I leave the house! I would also strongly advise from eating foods from anywhere other than your own kitchen; be it you're here or in America! If it doesn't make you sick right away odds are it will kill you years later, (America). Scams here aren't usually laced with the urge to kill you, (America). There are expats here living in newly remodeled or recently built beach/ocean front properties in areas where most of the topics in this video aren't an issue and are doing so for $500-$600 a month for rent vs $3,000-and up in other countries. You get the same ocean side view the same fresh air but at a much lower price. Racial Profiling; as mentioned, yes being a white person puts a bigger target on your wallet, in part due to the high volume of white men that have come here and still come here only to spend their entire retirement savings on the company of a young Filipina. Sometimes, these men end up being one of the homeless you pointed out in this video. Buying land and homes they can never own then being put out on their butts when the well dries up. Imagine coming here of all places and leaving $250.000 lighter behind chasing some tail 😂. This doesn't apply to every expat that comes here and sensibly invests. Also, if you already have an American grown sweetheart, beautiful and intelligent blonde or brunette, I wouldn't bring her here. Even I cringed at first of the things I had to see. The poverty here is on another level. But the people here can change your life and restore your faith in humanity. Here I'm an American expat but when it really matters I'm human.

    I visited once. That was enough! These were my observations;
The number one thing that stood out to me was the overwhelming poverty. It was heartbreaking!
Most places I visited were filthy with trash on the streets.
I felt like everyone had his hand out wanting something from me just because I was an older white guy.
I learned real fast local women have a fetish for white men there. I was approached twice in the 10 days I was there, asking if I was interested in a wife. One woman asked me if I would agree to impregnate her, no strings attached. She wanted a mixed baby.

Of course there was poverty everywhere, its a very poor country Marcos Snr plunged at least half the country into poverty during his reign, how could you end up in a country without knowing this sort of thing, you could have just googled poverty in the Philippines and you would had seen for yourself, most countries that side of the world have huge poverty issues, however you are correct about most things in this video, its poor, it has trash everywhere, food can be very hit and miss (I hated Jollibee) but there really are lots of beautiful places in the Philippines and ive been to them.

Having lived in the Philippines over a decade, I can say with some authority that “everything” is definitely NOT true, at least universally. It all depends on where you choose to stay. Almost none of these issues exist in the places I lived. If you live near slums, obviously there are beggars. I’ve never been extorted by the “police” - that’s a down right lie. Traffic enforcers are not police and cannot arrest you. This isn’t Mexico, the police don’t extort foreigners. All of the grocery stores I shops at are large and have air conditioning. How is it the country’s fault you rented terrible Airbnbs without AC?? Most of Asia has crazy traffic and far more scammers. These Karen’s should just stay in the US.

I have been visiting the Philippines for 14 years and i have personally seen for myself everything mentioned in the video,
Seeing families with babies and small children sleeping on the street i do find that upsetting,
One would think in this day and age there would be some sort of government scheme where families could at least get a roof over their heads,
The country has a very big population that makes it more difficult also the corruption that goes on,
It's a good country for a vacation but i personally wouldn't want to move there full time.

The government of the city actually do try to help the homeless people or ones displaced when their illegal shacks are demolished.
I’ve seen the new structures that are provided but do see the downside.
These people are given some cash also to move to these new government built houses.
There are a couple of issues in that where these houses are built do not suit many of the people moved there. It seems the government have put these in an area that has little to no job opportunities around that area. So after a period these people move back to the city again.
Also there are many professional squatters that are willing to move and take the money and don’t move there but find another area to squat in and get yet more cash to move.
I’ve seen these places and agree they are really not in the most desired areas but if the dwelling is free why complain but then again you have to live which is a vicious cycle.

Surely poverty abounds , dogs, slum areas, food issues, traffic , etc, you expected something different because many VLOGGERS lie about the truth, what you need to do is adapt and accept what the country has to offer and as americans ( i am one too) dont expect any country to be like ours or any other. The problem here is you guys went to some of the worst places in the Philippines. I've lived here (Tagaytay Cavite) for over 5 years and I like it. Here in Tagaytay Cavite, the weather is awesome. Its a constant temperature of 75 to 85 degrees all year. I never have to guess what the temperature is before I leave the house. Unlike where I lived in the US, I would stick my head out the door just to see if I needed a jacket😂. The people here are different from the people in those places you guys visited. But a lot of stuff you mentioned about Manila and AC was spot on. We go to Manila only when it's mandatory. We go in, do what we have to do there and get out. But all in all, the Philippines is my final destination. When my time comes to leave this earth, I will be buried in the veterans cemetery at Clark AFB.

You came to Philippines you did not go to Canada. You really want to be shocked go to Tijuana. I am happy in the Philippines. America is 3rd for having the most homeless in the world. Traffic, try to drive in Italy. Grocery store, you should have tried Robinson's it's as good as the US. Street food, I would not eat street food in the US such as taco stands. Housing, you need to look for what you like. The proper housing is available if you look for it. It's hot here so is Las Vegas, thats where i am from. Take a shit in the morning and just pee outside. Buy Multicab for $3,000 for transportation. Live in the Province where there is less traffic and in the Philippines you don't get $500 fine for a U turn. Scams, Wall Street and Taxes in the US are the biggest scamd. Forget pets altogether, you are coming here to meet ladies not play with your pet. In India there are Cows on the street. In Korea they eat dogs, so sensitive.
I love it here in the Philippines. The main reason men come to the Philippines is to find a femenine wife. They’re absolutely right from me who was born and raised in the Philippines. I moved to California in an immigrant visa. when I was a teenager. Luckily, my family is from a province which is a big difference from Manila. Now that I’ve raised my family here in the states they appreciate the province hen they go for a visit. And they do go to barrios or villages to give back to the community which is very heartwarming.

Watched this video thanks to Old Dog Paul.
Fortunately, I didn't have a horrible experience like the both of you. I recognize some of the problems you had, but a lot less.
Watch a positive, truthful review of the Philippines' watch Old Dog and That Philippines Life. Hopefully, you give it another try!
    Cheers!!!

Shout out goes to the email from Bill. Paul used the email to continue his personal rationale concerning P.I. issues. All while avoiding directly addressing the video itself. He simply added a link that was provided by Bill.
Remember; Paul was the next best thing to a politician.
He was a car salesman 😂
