    If you know the story of All Quiet on the Western Front from either the book or any previous adaptations, you go into the movie knowing that basically everyone is going to die, including Paul. The only difference in the 2022 film is Paul dies on November 11th, whereas in the original story he dies in October.
    Part of me had hope this adaptation would go in another direction, that Paul would be spared. But alas no, he still dies, with a peaceful look on his face, "as if happy the end had finally come."

      There is only 1 complaint I have with the 2022 adaptation (the movie is amazing, I think!) And that is the part where Paul goes on leave in the original story and meets Kantorek and has a conversation with some older gentlement is cut out of the film, which would have made the end more impactful to me as he shows that war has changed him to the point that he doesn't fit into normal society, so once the war is over his life will never be what it is, hence why he looks so peaceful when he dies.

    If you dont like a war movie because characters die without reason you really dont know about war. Stay with Spielberg, he knows how to make you happy at the end. Even if you just saw hundreds of men die, Spielberg wants you to feel good cause "it was worth it", thats just a false meaning.
    Soldiers dont found meaning in war, they find death, chaos and desperation. All Quiet in the western front represents that, if you are not ready for it stay with the happy endings war movies, but dont call the ending of this one stupid

      I hate to be the "umm actually" guy, but the title of the book comes from a newspaper article that the author saw whilst briefly back in Germany during the war, glofifying the German offence on the Eastern front. He saw his friends get blown apart and brutalised and becuase they hadn't made any progress in that area, all it said at the end of the article was the German of "in the West, nothing new".

    Im a feminist, so this movie is really important to me because it shows things men have suffered from due to societal pressures and gender stereotypes. Hell hes not even a man! Hes 17! And dead in a war! I bet he never even had sex. I bet he never got his heart broke or moved on and fell in love with another woman. Ive watched countless interviews of Vietnam veterans telling their story and the most common thing that I thought was so sweet is how they all make some kind of comment in the beginning when theyre telling you how old they were they say things like, "i had just turned 18 the day i got to boot camp. I was such a young pup. I had no business being over there. i shouldve been home chasing the girls...not tip toeing through some jungle 15,000 miles away looking for the Vietcong." Its some version of that, whether theyre proud of what they did in vietnam or not (they usually are because im sure its hard to not be because if you admit you arent...then in your head youre just a murderer even though you were a child. That wouldve been drafted if you didnt volunteer.) Guess what they couldnt recruit a 28 year old. They cant recruit a grown man. Is that because 28 year old men arent as good as 18 year olds? Id been 28 year olds would be better in every category BUT most of the recruits are 18, 19 years old. They cant recruit a grown man because he knows its not some adventure and he'd tell your ass to go do it yourself for that kinda pay. Then if its so fun why you over here recruiting when you can be on the front lines?! And some of them then got paralyzed from the waist down which meant they never got to have sex or have children. Another man said he'd prepared himself for death but he never prepared himself for coming home paralyzed and what that would mean for his life and ugh now that im 35 and i look back on the guys from my high school that went to the army and went to Iraq i thought they were so grown then but now? Id beg them to stay home. Fuck what happens in Iraq let them work it out. Guess what they wont ever work it out. They dont work together as a people their is a radical population that tries to enslave the other side and until they can make their own peace go to college get a girlfriend, get another girlfriend, get married wait a long time, have some kids, get a job that you hate but get to come home alive from STAY OUT THE MILITARY...i have a 1 year old son, and the only thing i cant accept from him, because i love him too much, is a military career. But that doesn't mean i dont love our soldiers.❤

    Paul dies in the book and the other two film adaptations. The whole point of that was to show how senseless and frivolous war is, especially the First World War which came as the result of a family squabble between cousins Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, King George V of the United Kingdom and Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany over agreeing which nations to back in the event of a fallout because an heir to the throne of Austria was assassinated by a Bosnian-Serb peasant.

  • @UlsterCountryball
    @UlsterCountryball 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The reason he dies for no reason is to really show how pointless war is. Yes heroism like saving private Ryan is amazing but in reality, in Ww1 there is a lot of unmarked graves of people who died just like that. I’m not saying no one was a hero or that every film must be completely historically accurate but it helps you see just how pointless it was and that he could have survived.

Or the transitions from battlefield to the lavish life the leaders where living, complaining about the pastries

    History remembers the leaders, the ministers, the presidents, the general and some isolated and outstanding actions from regular folks every now and then. The others ? They're just numbers, many died pointless deaths and were just turned into statistics, without a name, without a tomb. Armistice was signed at 5 am, but it came into effect at 11am of november 11th for poetic value...a poetic value that saw 3 thousand men die in a war that was already over. That movie portrays reality for what it is, most of us aren't the heros of an outstanding story, we're just pons or background caracters who do not matter in the bigger picture.

    The 1930 and 1979 version interpeted the ending of Baumer in a more themeatic, resolved, and peaceful way of dying and releasing all the stress and guilt of his lifetime during the great war. Paul's death in both of these adaptations also portrayed a different emotion to war then seen in the 2022 adaptation where it portrays an all out senselessness and stupidness of war, instead in his near end, he feel quiet, and felt peace where he stood. Even when the sniper had killed him, the whole Battlefield fell quiet, as if in war he had suffered, but while deceased, he felt what he had once reconziled to a lifetime ago, long before the war, a child.

    They tried to make the death a big major event, in the 1930 version the ending is much more simple, he sees a butterfly, he reaches out the suddenly he is shot by a sniper, no music, no big effects, nothing, a gunshot noise and thats it, then a radio transmission saying “all quiet on the western front” thats where the name of the book came from

  • @RTK_YT

    The ending on that movie sort of makes sense metaphorically. During the whole movie we saw a Boy eager to be on the battle fields, naive of what is to come. And the cost of war, the losses, the consequences of it are so drastic that no sides wins. Which leads to the ending with nothing and nobody, only losses.

    Everybody in world war 1 died for nothing. Such a great film, sure it's got its flaws but for the most part it's great.
    The heroic beautiful thought of war before the truth was out with all the young men optimistic and eager to get to war, they slowly approach the front and the grim reality starts to creep in then they're in the middle with the bombing and the children in distress like animals to the slaughter then they harden up and become temporary immune then the slow signs of PTSD and the constant contrasts between the grim reality of the soldiers and the paradise of the men who send the soldiers to their death for their own pride and ego.
    I love this film but it's super sad.
