      That little "Toy" sequencer really is the beginning of so much fun and great music. If it were any more elaborate, it would lose its charm and "sex appeal"

    Brings back happy memories when I owned one of these in my synth arsenal so so long ago. Didn't have the control box though for long. I think I played mine to death. Still playing synths/keyboards 36 years later, although VST/DAW's now.

    Also had a JX-8P (and still have alpha junos), they were all software envelopes after the Juno 60 (including the Jupiter 6), and it does make a difference in some applications. The early ones shared the same IR3101 envelopes, later on it was software.

    @MyBrownclown most praise you hear for the JX-3P is for its undeniably vintage sound, so it's probably not the first choice if you're going for "modern" sounds, but it IS capable of such sounds if programmed and EQ'd correctly (the sequencer is great for trancey gated pads). it's strength is definitely adding vintage character to tracks, and it works beautifully alongside more modern synths like the virus.

  • @VacTrooper

    This is a GREAT synth, the presets give a decent idea of what it can do, but it is SOOOO much better than that, you guys. It'll sound like a Juno. It is a Juno without the cost for buying new parts every year as far as I'm concerned. VERY underrated. VERY VERY cool and relevant synth today. I got an improved MIDI kit for it, too!

    @arnieslove yes.. once a sequence has been entered, holding the transpose button and pressing a single key on the keyboard will transpose it up to that key. you can also latch a chord and then transpose it using the same functionality.. very cool feature.

    the 106 is the only one that has unison. The JX and JU-60 are before roland made a separate lookup table for the interval timers. While you can stack the voices using midi or the sequencer, the effect is nil as they can't do separate tunings for each voice.

  • @ChasD
    @ChasD 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    *jealous* again, especially the PG200 for only £90! When I get the KIWI mod done I can use a generic midi box so all's not lost. Thanks also for the chat, I love discussing the technical side of synths as much as playing them. Good luck with the new album, I look forward to hearing it when you've finished it :-) P.S. I did pick up a Korg DW8000 last year for only £175, and though it's a analogue/ digital hybrid it's one of the last synth bargains still out there ;-)

  • @shayeasy
    @shayeasy 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @arnieslove the MIDI is primitive in that it only sends/receives note data, not parameter changes. the sequencer is actually disabled when you switch to MIDI mode, so you unfortunately can't send sequencer notes out as MIDI. you can however trigger the sequencer steps with a gate or trigger out to sync it with a DAW or other instruments, which is just as useful IMO.. you can always just replicate the same sequence in MIDI.

I bought a JX-3P although aveo already a JX-8P with programmer, a Korg MS-20, an Arp Odyssey (congratulations for the other video) a Chroma Polaris, a Sequential Circuits Multitrack and other less interesting... You have a lot of style and your videos are funny!

    @infesticon.. I have JX-3P. I bought it at a used shop and carried it out by hand, walking through the rain all the way home. I think JX-3P is light and pretty tough. I think the heaviest Roland keyboard is the Jupiter-4, which I bought but could not carry out the store so I had it shipped instead. JP-4 weighs a ton compared to JX-3P.

  • @brajtnerinjo

    it's a really nice synth, the filter is a bit on the raspy side but it works well for some kinds of music, and if you keep the cutoff fairly low it sound incredibly warm

    The VCR tracking problems, if artifically created, are ingenious. There's nothing about these vids that look like they were made in any time but the '80s. The music, sounds, synths, clothes, sunglasses, text, and video effects are all perfect. Even your damn hair is perfect. In every nostalgic movie I've ever seen, there's always something to tip you off that it was only just recently made. Nice Terminator theme cover by the way... :o)

    My first polysynth and the the most underrated analogue out there. Got two now with Organix upgrades (PG200 + MIDI +++) Now looking for a third one to put a Kiwi upgrade on. Look up Kiwi JX3P - they've done some mad wizardry! If you're looking for your first proper analogue, this is it. Not hard to program without the PG-200, unlike the 8P. Top tip - if you find you can't get good bass patches, make sure the HPF is turned down. Some numptys think this thing can't do bass. Trust me - it can.

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    ftr my JX-3P cost £150 and the PG-200 I got for £90 - though it was as you say before they started to rise. Anyway, enough synth chat - good discussion. all the best! :)

  • @shayeasy
    @shayeasy 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @FOCtv people who think it's a thin or poor sounding synth haven't ventured past the presets or don't know how to properly program. it's capable of some massive sounds that most would have a hard time differentiating from a jupiter 8.

    @1986uno45s The upgrade allows simultaneous use of a PG-200 and MIDI at the same time but the new additions (2nd LFO, 2nd envelope, portamento, etc) aren't accessible with the PG-200. You would have to use the regular parameter/sense slider method or Kiwi's new Patch Editor box (can be used on any Roland synth that needed a programmer and some others like the Matrix 1000)

  • @Gazdatronik

    Here is a mod to make your JX-3p sound even better:
    Solder wires from the POLY OUT test point and the GND test pointnext to it.
    They're located on the upper left part of the mainboard, surrounded by small yellow plastic.
    Solder the POLY OUT wire to a 1/4 inch audio jack positive terminal. Wire the GND to the negative terminal of the audio jack. Mount the jack somewhere.
    It bypasses the chorus unit, volume, and the useless highpass filter. You get less hiss, more bass and treble response.

  • @ChasD

    Regarding the JX3P's filter, according to Wiki: "The VCF was based on the custom Roland IR3109 IC (also used in the filter circuits of the Jupiter-6, later Jupiter-4 units, MKS-80 rev 4, Juno-6/Juno-60, SH-101, MC-202, JX-3P and packaged in the 80017a chip used in the Juno-106 and MKS-30 among others)." So the filter is the same as in other Roland analogue classics, inc Jupiter 8! The key to get thicker, warmer sounds on the JX3P is to make sure the High Pass filter is turned right down ;-)

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    And yes, I have my 3P modded with organix mod and have a PG-200 and have owned it for years. Have got so many great bass sounds out of it (Some that sound thicker than the Juno) so I'm all too aware of how good/under-rated the 3P is. Wasn't my point at all! I was only talking filter differences. I love both the 3P and the Juno 60. I'm just not keen on the 106! Jexus,, according to his website, thinks similarly.

  • @SpacehotelMusic

    thanks! and for buying it. R25 was more of an offshoot from my usual style but the second album will be a bit more like that. Can you believe I even get any music done when I'm debating synth/filter idiosyncrasies on the net night and day? haha! it's about the music so I'd better get back to it! :)

    I'm agreeing with you! The filters are physically the same, though their applications are different as is very apparent in all the different models that it is fitted to. I also know your song 'Rewind 25' very well, I bought it and it gets very regular airings on my MP3 player! ;-) Wish you would do an entire album in this style!

    JX-3P... GET THIS SYNTH! I got one, and it sounds AWESOME, as this Jexus video proves. The JX-3P would have been a #1 big hit synth in 1983, it was a ground breaking synth of the original analog era, first MIDI synth, first Roland with a sequencer, black tough metal construction. BUT unfortunately released in the same year as the infamous YAMAHA DX-7, which totally digitalized the game, and made minimalist interfaces cool, despite being inconvenient for tweaking. LOL

  • @ChasD
    @ChasD 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that the Juno 6/ 60 have a smoother sound that is more 'pleasant' in some instances. However, the JX3P has way more options and flexibility for soundscaping, and what it lacks in 'warmth' it gains in a much wider sonic palate that the Junos can only dream of. Also, switch the chorus on, turn the HPF right down, set both DCO's to 16', detune DCO2 to the lowest setting and set the ADSR to a fast/ snappy curve and you can get some very punchy and thick bass that cuts through a mix great!

  • @ChasD
    @ChasD 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The VCF filter chip (IR3109) IS exactly the same in the aforementioned Roland models, though you are very right that the surrounding circuitry also makes a difference. All the Roland models that share this VCF chip have individual sounds and characters indicating that this is very much the case. I feel that the Juno 6/ 60 derive much of their warmth from the onboard chorus and also the inclusion of a sub oscillator. A shame that the JX3P didn't get a sub oscillator too.

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    possibly, and I think the J60 sounds 'closer' to the JP-8 than the JP-6 does (in the filter). When I bought organix, kiwi wasn't even hinted at or I'd have waited too. Having said that, Kiwi is a lot harder to fit by the looks of it and I get on fine without the extra features (but I would like some of them!).

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I'm agreeing with your agreeing then! ;) - Just wanted to make it clear I wasn't say overall the Juno 60 is 'better' than the 3P (or that the 3P is bad somehow), yes the filter isn't quite as good on the 3P but look at what extras you get! great synth! As said they both have their character/uses.

  • @douro20
    @douro20 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    JX series synths can be had quite affordably, and with the addition of the PG800, are very versatile.

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes about the hardware vs software envelopes all too well. The reason I bought a Juno 60 was for the envelopes, need the speed for fast arpeggios/sequences - though JX-3P isn't too shabby it's not as fast on the attack.

  • @ChasD
    @ChasD 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I meant that some 3P owners adjusted the resonance at the same time as fitting the KIWI mod, and with the extra features the resonance became a different (wilder) animal! We do agree that all these Rolands have their individual strengths and weaknesses, despite sharing some of the same circuitry. The 3P has been very underrated for a while, though prices are now on the rise as people are realising just how good they are under the skin (mine cost £168!). As for your £350 Juno 60 - *jealous*!

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    so in order of pleasing sound:
    Juno 60 (or 6)
    JX-3P (slightly less good filter but the 2 Oscs can really thicken things up)
    Juno 106 (has the lesser filter setup of the 3p and only one osc = not great)

  • @SpacehotelMusic
    @SpacehotelMusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You dont need the kiwi mod to adjust the res! I have adjusted the res as far as it will go in mine, the self oscillation is then 'closer' in effect but not in tone! I've compared it un-tweaked and tweaked. Whatever roland did to the 3P they also did to the 106 in my opinion and it's an evolution of the orignal setup in the 6/60/8 - then obviously they moved to IR3105 in the 8P/Alpha junos which is far weaker sounding (but still good for it's applications)
    BTW my Juno 60 cost £350 :)

  • @ChasD
    @ChasD 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very much so, and apparently some of that is down to the JP8/ J6 & 60 having more hardware envelopes, compared with the J6 having software envelopes (as does the JX3P). The JX8P also had software envelopes, which are often criticised for being too slow. I feel that a lot is down to the control of the IR3019 filter also, with the JP8 + J6/60 not being restricted to digital stepping (software controlled) as per the later Rolands with MIDI.

  • @AdjustableSquelch
    @AdjustableSquelch 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    thats the PG-200 programmer, costs as much as the synth itself!. you can program it without the pg, but its a pain in the rear. there is a brand new clone called the DT-200 you can buy, or there's the JX-3P midi expansion kit which will respond to MIDI CC messages, or top of the range is the KIWI-3P.

  • @ChasD
    @ChasD 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe we're getting slightly crossed wires here. My point is that though the physical VCF chip is the same, I agree that the surrounding circuitry makes a difference, hence all the Roland models with this VCF have unique characters. I also agree that the in the JX3 the filter isn't as smooth as the Junos (it's very steppy in fact), and the resonance isn't as smooth either. Then again, that's what also gives the JX3 some of its 'gritty' sound :)

  • @arnieslove

    Sorry, I'm clearly NOT debating how good the 3P is vs the Juno at all. You've misread me. I merely pointed out it's a fallacy to say the filters are 'the same' when they SOUND different (regardless of on paper spec/chip). I told you I love the 3P? have used one for years and know it inside out - if you care to check my channel the song I have on there is written on the 3P and even mentions it in the lyrics! :) that's how much I like it! I know it's flexible versus junos too, but Juno 60 is great

    BTW you seem to be reading wiki and getting your findings from that? I actually have them all in front of me and have tested the filters for hours on all those synths, it clearly isnt' just a case of 'it has the same ir3109 as the Jupiter 8' they sound different, do a resonant sweep on a Juno 60 vs a 106/3P - totally different tone. So all I was saying is that the 106 has more of the 3P filter character than the 6/60/jp8.

The filter does sound a lot different on the 3P vs the Juno 6/60+JP-8, that's all I'm saying. I compare with chorus off!? I barely use chorus on any of the synths. It's not about thickness, it's about filter at high resonance and cut off and that is where they differ, juno=smooth jx/106=not. The cut off actual opens more on the Juno vs the 3P too. I like both synths as said.

    @robocelot Thanks for the information! Would something like the Behringer BCR2000 also work with the new additions? Oh, and I took delivery of my JX3P last week :-) Now I will be saving up for the Kiwi upgrade chip!

    Maybe it's not the filter itself then, but it does sound quite raspy when you turn the cutoff freq. up (at least mine does). Maybe this is the problem (source retrosynth): "The oscillators' frequency is derived from a master clock which is divided by an even integer to obtain a close approximate pitch. This method never allows the oscillators to produce a pure pitch across the entire range, and is probably accountable for the JX-3P's somewhat harsh sound"

    The Organix mod looks good, though with all the extra features the KIWI offers I think I will save for a little longer to get that. Interesting that the JX3P and Juno 106 get different results from the filter when compared with the Juno 6/ 60 and Jupiter 8. I wonder if the inclusion of MIDI has something to do with that (and the stepping)? And I wonder if the Jupiter 6, also MIDI equipped, was affected in the same way as some don't like its sound compared with the Jupiter 8?
