I love this plant! I have tried to propagate them by cuttings in water many MANY times and have had no success. I have made sure to change the water frequently, remove any dead leaves, and use ideal and adequate cuttings. Every time none of them pull through or produce any roots. We have several lining our flower beds and out of all the flowering plants in our yard, this plant attracts the most butterflies, hummingbirds, bee’s and other pollinators. We are having to sell our home and move and i really want to take this plant with us. All of ours are too established in the ground making it nearly impossible or a death sentence to dig up and put into pots. Please help.. What am I possibly doing wrong?! I really want to propagate some of my jatropha cuttings successfully!
Sure, absolutely! Jatropha can easily be propagated directly in soil too. It's just easier in water because you can constantly monitor what's happening with leaves and roots and alter whatever that is needed. Also, that doesn't mean it works this way for every plant, some other cuttings work better directly into the soil. Thank you, Laura. Great to hear from you again!
@Laura Lu in the case of Jatropha, it's not required. The plant is pretty hardy. However there a few things you can do to avoid the transplant shock- 1. Introduce some amount of potting mix in the water right when you start the propagation. Let us say if you are using 1 litre of water then 10 gms of the potting mix is perfect 2. Pre-soak the pot twice within last 2-3 days before the transplantation 3. The length of the roots (in water) should be more than 3 inches so that if there are root hairs involved then they are also fully developed and it is easier for the plant to adapt the new medium successfully A couple of other things you need to take care of- reserve the cooler part of the day for transplantation and also, next 3-5 days the plant should not see the direct sun. Anything else, please let me know and as always we will talk about it. Thank you again for bringing in such a relevant topic to the fore. Cheers!!
I had a branch blow off of my jatropha tree during a storm it was a few days before I was able to do the cuttings from that branch and the leaves have begun to dry and shrivel up. Inside the stem was still damp and green. Is it too late or will this still work?
I would call that a blessing in disguise, the process of callous saved the branch from being completely dead. Anyway, leaves would have been discarded when a cutting is started, for you that has already happened. Now you got to make a cut wherever you see the greenish stem and discard the dried or calloused part and it would work better than a regular cutting! Scar 2-3 inches of the bottom part and then keep the cutting in a cinnamon powder and water solution for about 2-3 hours and then take it into the soil. Water immediately and keep the pot in a shaded spot for 2 weeks (water once every 3-4 days) or so and once you see leaves all grown, take the plant to a sunny spot and start watering once in 7-10 days for good. I put some cuttings in water and some in soil covered with a clear plastic bottle 2 weeks ago.... last week my water cuttings started to sprout some leaves i still don’t see roots .... and my soil ones 3 days ago started to sprout leaves i don’t know if they have roots yet but i am so excited that both methods worked so far ... hopefully later i have lots of my cuttings with roots ❤️
Wow, that's great!! So you removed all the leaves from the cuttings put in water, it would have worked better if hadn't removed all the leaves, never mind now, you said already new leaves are coming- that's great news! Do you see some white blisters at the bottom, that's the sign right before roots will start to develop. So watch out 😊👍 and it might be a month or so for that process to start. Well done with the cuttings in soil too, once you have leaves it would be at least 2 months that you can say they have well developed roots. Of course, all your cuttings look in great shape and I believe you will have amazing results, no doubt 😊👍 Would like it if you share another update whenever you are ready 😊💚 Cheers!!

You're welcome 😊 👍
If possible, please make sure you share an update!
Of course, all your cuttings look in great shape and I believe you will have amazing results, no doubt 😊👍
Would like it if you share another update whenever you are ready 😊💚 Cheers!!
