This was so much fun, we’ve done the same exact thing and struggled just like you did. We don’t have equipment to dig/move things but always look at a project like “this shouldn’t be too hard” and half way through say, what we’re we thinking.... thanks for showing even the hard stuff. Merry Christmas!🎄
I made that mistake once. Saw a free japanese maple tree on craigslist, and thought "I can dig that up". Way more work than I had anticipated. Plus I had to put it in the ground as soon as I got it home. I don't believe I'll be doing that again. Still have the tree though, and it's a beautiful tree.
9:53 Leverage is key here. I always use a thick iron pipe, if it's long enough you can tip it down with one hand and the tree will pop out. Zero struggling involved... Except getting it in a wheelbarrow, but you can also use a tarp and drag it along.
@@varrock4517 Anything that won't bend in the middle I guess ... A thin rock bar will probably dig into the clump in stead of lifting it, but you can put a piece of wood in between.
Glad to see you, John. I've missed your videos in recent weeks. Hope you have a Christmas full of good food, fine friends, and all the merry you can take!
This was priceless. We went through this exact process today including breaking a spade handle! So far the tree has won but tomorrow we will go back at it and probably get it the rest of the way out. Just as you said, the spot where it currently lives is way too sunny and it gets burned in the summer. We’re going to move it to where it gets more shade in the heat of the day.
Great to have a new video, John! Hope you are having a wonderful Christmas. Great to finally hear David's voice, too, maybe one day he will say hi on camera. Your assistant did a great job and I wish all of you would come to my house. How is Teddy?
'' Oh ! hang on a minute, this job calls for someone with more strength and stamina ............ah ! ....the wife....... thank goodness, here she is to the rescue ! ''
I think I would have took a hose to soak the ground first, also helps the tree to have moisture when replanted. Why did you plant it in the rocks the first time? Does cutting all those roots so close hurt the tree?
Why not just pot up the lovely Acer ? - already so spoiled with your climate (-28C is our Minnesota usual winter low). I guess it must be the holiday gifting to the neighbor. My neighbor is only getting chocolates, but we do a lot of yard work year round for her though. Happy Holidays.
The width of the branches is generally the distance of the roots in the ground... In practice the biggest clump you can physically handle, which is about wheelbarrow size.
@@KidMillions of course plant species makes a big difference. Some species have shallow roots that spread far beyond the canopy (cherry and willow for example) and some have a few anchoring roots but the majority go deep down
Was it pressing to dig it this early? Best chance for continued vigour is late February at budswell. Try an Arakawa, much more sun resistant. A grafter spade would really help (as well as a fit lady with a pick).
@@acechadwick In my garden now it would be a perfect time. However, trees react to climactic conditions (which are obviously variable based on location) so it's best to base your judgement about lifting on the state of the tree rather than a fixed calendar date.
How would the average gardening know that the root ball could be so small and still support that tree? My instincts would have had a ball at least 12--18" bigger in diameter.
I bought a Mattock because of you... that and a tamper bar or I call it a root axe will do that job with minimum of hard labour use both tools for stumps and transplants like that... great vid you did the hard work for real... hello Millennials watch this guy then go do something instead of complaining but I digress.... great vid thanks!!

This is the most fun I have had watching gardening videos. I do this sort of thing all the time. The tree ALWAYS wins!!!! You two did a good job.

@@markyamaguchi9571It is. Got lucky I guess.

It’s lovely to see some comedy on your channel 😂🤣
Looks a lot like most of my gardening 😂🤣
The Robin at the end was everything 🥰
I moved a miscanthus that required pretty much the same amount of work, and digging techniques 😀Thank you John for this realistic moment of gardening.
I got tired watching you all work so hard, but you made me smile. I have a Japanese maple to transplant, hopefully it won't be too difficult.
I really enjoyed watching this...and David I'm glad you put all of it on the internet. Merry Christmas!!

ah I see what you mean that's not a bad idea, maybe even use a rock bar if you don't have any piping?

It was as if that beautiful little tree's purpose for moving to its new home was to make friends with that perfect little bird...🌳🐤💞
Great video, love to see the work happen.
This is the best! Laughing and enjoyed so much! Thanks for not cutting it!
Merry Christmas John & crew, I know theres not much to do in winter gardens but please keep the videos coming. I miss your advice & cheeky grin

I love how real this is!
Sure we needed to see the whole thing. And no we want to see the hard stuff too. Great video.
This was hilarious a proper real bit of gardening :) Job done in the end and hopefully, it settles in nicely and thrives.
Good to see you, John. Winter garden chores do seem to be the hardest work.
good Job, you three!! Plus the Robin...
had to laugh Tears as you were struggeling to get it into the Wheel barrow...
Ah! The cameraman films while she chops and digs with the boss. Someone has a cushy contract.🤔👷♂️
Great job guys and girls especially the girl what a wonderful worker.
Great video!

This video reminds me of planting once and done!
is it me or the woman was doing the hard
bits? :)) oh, John😂
Seriously, she was hauling ass while the menfolk were watching.
If you want the job done right!👍
🎄Merry Christmas 🎄
Yay! Another John Lord video. Just in time for Christmas. 🎄
God bless you for convincing me I actually didn't want to transplant my Japanese maples 😂
He hee...I manage a maple nursery and landscape business. I can appreciate this video LOL. Good entertainment right here..
You lucky dude - dream job! Where are you? I've grown maples for bonsai all my adult life - love them!

It’s situations like this that really make you appreciate mechanization. 😁

Hi John,
Would you please talk about bulbs .many thanks
The new generation of energy saving ones last for years I believe
@@edmundblackaddercoc8522 🤣🤣🤣
I would probably air rooted the largest branch first, and dig the tree afterwards, having two trees.
Lol....let’s start a go-fund-me project to get John that mini digger....
Don’t you think it’s getting burned more because of the stone topping and the reflected heat rather than too much sun?
I hadn't even considered that. It's a possible contributor.
There's v little sunshine in Ireland in the first place! Lol
How do you know how much roots is enough for the tree to survive?

Wow! Watching that tired me out! Whew!
Is that ok to cut the routs as you did, I thought you are gooing to kill the tree

December is early?
Paul Pashley: I've transferred one last week. Feb 14th. Is that a good time and if so why?
@@acechadwick Look at the buds on the tree. If they are swelling, just before leafing out, then it's a good time to lift.
@@bonsa1guy Thank you Paul. I was sweating there thinking I was 3 months too late!

Rocks and boulders? Now we need a new fork ...
Did the tap root snap??

Thoroughly entertaining...oh and you learn a thing or two along the way 🥴
I shifted a weeping Japanese maple two days ago, hubby chopped it out with a axe. Remains to be seen if it survives 🤷♀️
OMG, that's just a small maple.
Looks to me as if that was planted more than two years ago. Either that or you have very special soil in Ireland.
Depending on variety they can grow 2/3 foot per season, grow very quickly in right conditions
he MOVED it two years ago. i think.
I have a 9 ft demolition bar for this sort of thing
Now that was a lot of hard work, for you and your partner in crime. Where’s the neighbor? 👍❤️😊
I thought you were going to wrap that puppy up in burlap and show us all how its done.
My Katsura J maple is the size of a pencil 😆😞

i agree with the bird, what the hell did i just watch?
I literally took one of these out in 5 minutes.
Just a lazy Irishman.
Video should be called :How to abuse a Maple in 15 minutes? Listening to the roots being ripped from the earth and tree was a cringe worthy moment.

Nothing gentle about John 😂
how not to dg a japanese maple
:( i see very lazy and too quickly way of digging up a tree
