Going "above and beyond" got me nothing but disrespect, distress and depression. Now? I show up on time (not a minute earlier), do my job (not a thing more), and leave on time (not a minute later). Life is much, MUCH better this way.
You know when it hit me? When my coworker died in his 30’s and guess what? He worked his ass off and they just packed his desk up like he was nobody. Even when we attended his funeral they were blowing our phone up asking when we will be back at work🤔 like wtf? Smh I promised from that time on that I wouldn’t go above and beyond because you will be packed up and replaced with no care in the world. I do my part and only what’s required and go home. I would never take time off and now I take time off monthly. I don’t abuse the system or anything but I do prioritize myself over the company and happily! These companies don’t care about you but it is YOUR DUTY to take care of yourself💜
I’m 54 and I’ve worked in HR for over 26 yrs, I’ve been teaching my family and friends to stop doing this for over 20 yrs. This applies to our men and women!
Nobody: …. Me: The best advice I will give and currently do is TAKE all of your PTO, stay out of work gossip, do your job and start and leave ON TIME!!!! Lastly, start working on your health, that’s true wealth. Get your check-up’s, go outside for walks (natural vitamin D), workout, go to your local library and READ, drink more water and eat more Whole Foods & less processed foods. Lastly, and most important….. Get out of consumer debt, I promise you, your mindset will NATURALLY shift. I am now debt-free and the level of FREEDOM that it brings me is unmatched. ❤🧘🏿♀️❤ When you become debt free, DO NOT TELL ANYONE especially at your job because people are NOT happy for you & will hate on you when you start putting yourself first…
I went above and beyond at my last company, and you know what I was rewarded with? More work! They gave me a measly 3% pay rise for double the workload. So I handed in my notice and started a new job in NY in 2025. More money, but my workload is significantly decreased, and I work within a supportive environment. I'm loving my new job. Now I never work my lunch, and I take my lunch every day away from my desk. I don't do unnecessary overtime, I stick to my hours whether in the office or remotely, and I set and stick to my boundaries. Look out for yourself, as these employers will try and take the piss out of you. Also, try to have savings so you never have to tolerate a job you hate.
Agree!!! That last sentence! Just quit a high paying tech job but because I am a part of the “overemployed” community, I quit after 2 months bc I just didn't like it! Bye bye!
I made that decision in August 2023. Walked away & didn't look back. No amount of money is worth my well-being. I also managed my money well & was a good steward over my finances. This allowed me 6 months off to rest & recuperate. I promised myself never to work like that again.
AMEN!!!! After 10 years of consistent 10 to 16 hour days for a fortune 500 financial institution, they had no problem bringing in someone that knew NOTHING about the role, providing her triple the size team, two mentors and allowed her to get her MBA will I did the work of 3 people and was required to educate them on the gaps in the department because no one else was proficient in all areas "soup to nuts" and couldn't identify the gaps. They had NO problem making her the team manager, transitioning me to another team to do the same thing for them but "going in a different direction" the day I turned 50! I was laid off in 10 minutes over the phone. The associate and executive were surprised that I wasn't upset. I was the ONLY manager of color and female in the division - really? In addition, in my opinion LinkedIn is just an additional way to SEE what you look like without the legal implications. It is not just a "professional way to connect".
😂 I thought i was the only one who thought so... This is the same "Independent Woman Don't Need No Man" crowd.. They've been going above and beyond and getting left high and dry since slavery @@John.Flower.Productions
If you are not in "the club", no amount of effort on your part will get you ahead. I say this as a retired professional who went above and beyond for decades.

The last job I had used watsapp to communicate with staff. Although i hated it, I complied. My 3rd day on the job, i was on the train heading to work and the director called me upset. He said, " I've sent you multiple messages, check them." And hung up. At that moment, I made it very clear to him and everybody else, "ONCE I'M OFF THE CLOCK, I'M OFF THE CLOCK!" You're free to leave as many messages as you wish. They won't be answered until i clock in. They had me messed up😂😂😂😂
Yes, I never let employers know that I had a landline 📞 at that time. They only had my cellphone 📱 number, I made it clear I don't walk around holding a cellphone all day, and I don't check messages.
Getting promoted in corporate America is never a secret. The people are told "behind closed doors" they are NEXT UP. Promotions rarely comes as a surprise despite how hard you work.
Honestly, for people who are like me, and notices behavioral patterns of people, we can tell who the next up is immediately. You can tell where the hope lies by how they treat certain people.
Yes! There are definitely a few 'chosen' ones, and it has less to do with "best & brightest" than the 'comfort' of management with certain individuals and how they 'behave.'
The last company I worked for was constantly asking for ways to improve the company and I wrote out a list of great ideas and then I realized..... companies pay outside consultants millon dollar contracts for ideas to improve the company. I deleted that email and quit a year later. You have to pay me for my knowledge and ideas just like you pay everyone else.
Figured this out two years ago at 40 when that same tried to fire me ! So when I got my job back I was on some f em and only started to do the bare minimum when I was scheduled. Never work on your off days , never tell them what’s going on with you, make money and not friends at your job . Never let your health fail bc of your job!! You get one body and life ! I stopped last August going above and beyond. They figured out how to cheat me out of my promotion and raise after saving the company millions. Been applying for others jobs and nothing. Looking at starting my own thing in 2025. I started excercising and eating healthy until I am financially able to leave this year to keep going.
If you decide to change companies, look for an "ESOP" company. It's a retirement benefit that mean: Employee Stock Ownership Plan. You can look it up; it’s a lot of information online. I changed companies not long ago & my current company offers it. I never heard of it before now (I’m 46). It’s highly beneficial & it does not replace 401k, it’s in addition. I plan to stay at my company until retirement and I also plan to start something on the side in 2025. Good luck to you.

The longest I’ve been on any job is 3 years. Once I’m not happy, once I’m tired of the place/people, I resign. My blood/my family doesn’t know what slavery is, therefore I never slave myself for anyone/company. I get to work 5 to 10 minutes before time, and clock out on the clock at the end of the day. I do what I’m supposed to do, then leave. I will not suffer, or slave at any job, or let anyone treat me any kind of way. There’s a million other jobs out there.
Wish I could do the same. I still cannot fathom how I got stuck in a !!! job, looking back too much financial responsibility and procrastinating goals 😢
I’m quite sure in so many cases when black women opt to not go above and beyond & just simply do their job they’re still doing so much better quality work than many of their non black colleagues ☕️💅
I remember recently seeing this TikTok were this guy worked 25 years at like a Burger King without calling off one time. And for his retirement they gave him a 4 x 6 inch plaque. And thats it…. That inspired me to use every single one of my call out days. Even if Im not sick.
Or the one that made the news. After years ago where the man had perfect attendance for over 20 years at Burger King and they gave him candy. People online donated money because it was so offensive. He now owns a home!

I totally AGREE I worked on a job for 18 years. Did above and beyond. I received on 2 increases. Went in the office to ask for a increase its been 4 years since the last. The Director actually told me "People in AFRICA is STRAVING" 😡 I walk to my desk clear out everything and quit. GOD BLESSED ME EVER SINCE I LEFT THAT PLACE SALARY DOULBED
True yet, use wisdom. What she is saying is balance and order and purpose. 1 Thess. 4:11-12 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
There's also casting your pearls before swine. We should be careful. Even though we want to make it about ourselves and God, but sometimes it about the person receiving our output. And it doesn't matter to produce quality pearls if they're going to end up being received by swine (AKA pigs)
I worked for 22 years and went above and beyond. Putting the job first, missing kids activities, family get togethers and much mores. COVID came and I was told I was not longer needed. I will never again go above and beyond for any job. It was the grace of God that didn't allow me to fall on my face. God kept me after losing that job and provided for me in many ways. No more! Going above and Beyond for God not for a job
Ain’t that the truth. You work for a company for years, work more hours than required, go beyond what’s expected of you, team player, etc and can still see the door.
I stop going above and beyond a long time ago. Between the burnout and the stress it wasn’t worth it. I love being an engineer and it was a goal that set for myself while I was in high school, and I achieved. I’ve been a engineer for over 15 years. Now I go in do the job and go home.
I needed to hear this. Spent over four years of my life holding it down for my service. Now they have overlooked me and promoted a man (their “click” buddy) that lives an hour away from the work place. Early, staying late, coming in on days off, and still seek me out for guidance! I have officially put my mental health and happiness first in years! Thank you for this.
They are so bold now that they have no problem telling us the quiet part out loud. They consider us the SLUR “DEI Hire” and don’t consider us to be qualified enough to be in the position. I refuse to break my back for such companies/ people. I will do my job and go home
Same here. There isn't a salary big enough to get me back into the Payroll Manager role. I make it very clear how important my lunch hour is to me. It's actually a standing blocked meeting on my calendar.
I worked in Payroll Management for over 10 years and all staff appreciated the hard work I was doing. They got rid of my post and gave my job to an agency staff. To make things worse they let me train her for the role. Evil people.
“Do your best but don’t give them your best” omg, yes. I’m almost 40 and Been working in the public schools and public education/healthcare sector for 13 years. Never worked past my hours physically, but mentally felt like I was working 24/7. I am working on moving out of that career now. I negotiated a good pay while working the school calendar, but even with that, it just wasn’t worth the price paid in my health and relationships.

I applied for a promotion after working for them for 20 years, but they hired a yt girl with no experience and no background in the field. They didn't even have the courtesy of letting me know that they hired her. She just showed up. They expect me to be okay with training her. I do not participate in the training, and I no longer go out of my way as I did before.
This is a very real and scary truth in corporate. They will let black women go in a heartbeat and your left thinking “Wow I know I went above and beyond at this place what did I do?” smh
So true. So far I have worked at three major corporations, at two of the corporations I was the only black female in the office. At the latest one I was managing Human Resource, payroll and accounts payable. I went above and beyond: working overtime, on weekends, available to take phone calls even on my family vacations and traveled for company meetings. I realized my workload was greater than anyone else’s in the office, so I started pushing back, and when I started questioning they fired me. I am convinced that all things work together for the good, the job I am on now is less stressful, I don’t work overtime and I am not trading my mental health for a paycheck.
Girl it’s really sad, I was also the only black woman at the corporate job they let me go from smh. I’m happy more black women are waking up to this cruel and harsh reality, and I’m soo happy for you that you have found peace and joy in your new environment :)
This was my experience. I made it to the C-suite but with every promotion I had to clean up behind the mess and incompetence of the mostly males and females who were not of color before me. What angered me is that they were tolerated and I was frequently promoted into crisis and chaos. After they were removed for incompetence, benign positions were created for them that allowed them to keep their salaries. If I messed up like they did I would have been shown the door. I was their clean up woman my entire career, and that took some long hours and sacrifices. I mentored women of color to come behind me to cleaned up departments and divisions so they wouldn’t have to go through what I did. I thank God for my quick thinking, problem-solving skills and the support my family gave me. I managed to balance for my family by managing on a lot less sleep, but my overall health suffered. I have been in health repair mode for years.
To make matters worse, the Black professional who is brought in as cleanup behind the mess of whyte incompetence is often eventually unceremoniously fired, scapegoated with blame for their whyte predecessor's incompetence and destruction, and then a new whyte replacement is installed after firing of the Black cleanup professional. The whyte replacement is then credited with the improvements made by the now fired Black cleanup professional who was fired as the fall guy.
If you have that go above and beyond attitude, do just that; FOR YOUR OWN BUSINESS ‼️ Clearly you're an entrepreneur so put in all that effort and hard work for yourself and those who matter.
They will use you until they can’t use you anymore. They will take your ideas, present them as their own and take credit for all of it. They will have you training and imparting knowledge into the person that they will promote over you to be your supervisor/manager.
I can work hard, come in early, stay late, assist others and that paycheck STAYS the same... nothing like a Portia Show piece to remind me to CONTINUE WITH MY OWN BUSINESS!
Happened to me. Yt woman got mad, said i made her look bad in front of her leaders. I told her boss that she didn't do the work i told her to do. Anyways had to get a lawyer. Now working for same agency, 100 teleworking, making more money and loving my life doing my new job from home in peace. Jesus is real!!! Never give them to much, theyll take more. Keep your knowledge to yourself and work as unto the Lord.
The pearl of wisdom was 'do your best (with what they've given you), but don't GIVE them YOUR best.' I had to replay this a few times to grasp the essence of this wisdom. Save your best effort and work for God, yourself, and your family. These employers should only get what they pay us for. I've been working for 37 years and co-sign this message! ☺️
One of my girlfriends retired early and due to management change, she had to do the work of an entire department! People were getting sick and dying from overwork and she did not want that to be her story. She says her stress levels are way down after retiring! I say good for her!
That is so sad. 😢 In my experience, seeing a man from church who is a part of the boomer generation get laid off after 40 years while I was still in middle school is what changed my perspective. I’m born in the year between Gen Z and Millennials. I know I work with good work ethic and I’m a team player, but I leave if an environment is toxic and my concerns are dismissed. I had one experience where as soon as I left one job I instantly became healthier (I got to the point where I could not hold ANYTHING down because of the stress causing me to be nauseas. I focused even more on being gentle with myself since then).
This is a serious paradigm shift in our thinking. I'm going to do my best, but not give them my all. I'm going to save my all for my passion projects or where I choose to serve in my community.
Worked my butt off at a company for 6 years. Got awards, recognition from head office and district/regional supervisors, and was getting ready for a promotion. All it took was for them to hire a manager who didn’t like me and all of that went out the window.
I went above and beyond at my former job, they took advantage and fired me when I went out on medical leave. Yes, we need to do our best with others and GIVE our best in our OWN businesses.
Made the decision to stop going over board for 2025. Last year taught me no matter how good of a job you do, they’ll still promote those who fit their preconceived mold. Going over and beyond did nothing but give me a measly 2% raise, detriment to my health and feeling burnt out. No more!
Yep this is so true, they don't respect your efforts, most often are intimidated & threatened and go out of their way to stop your progress. Save the best and your emotions for your own life.
Just learned this after getting the shaft a few days ago !!!worked -10-12hrs days for last 3 Months because of a promised” bonus “ only to have the goal post moved after having done the work!!! And the company and higher ups still benefitted from my work!! I’m still mad😡
OMG! That recently happened to me. Jumped through required HR and department hurdles for a promotion that never came. Then in 2022 was laid off two weeks b4 my 25 year work anniversary. Stellar performance reviews, worked late, rewrote policies, streamlined processes to a point where I literally worked myself out of a job. Now as a quinquagenarian I can't find work. SMH. I can't change the past but I sure learned my lesson. Not bitter but I am wiser ;-).
I definitely receive this advice. We excel on the job, yet get very little respect or appreciation. Several are quite deliberate about keeping us in what they consider as "our place." Even more dismaying is that many have the same skin tone as us. Thank you for this confirming reminder that I am worth it and that operating with excellence does not require me to give them my best or my all.
I went through some stuff with bw supervisors. One was tougher on bw than bm and nonblacks. I just felt like it was a bit of the slave mentality at play. I ended up feeling bad for her bc she was overlooked for a promotion despite having her doctorate and experience. She kept playing it safe and letting them folks play with her. A part of me get it bc she wanted to play it safe. Last I heard they fired her and she moved on.
This is hard to hear but it is needed. I was in education for 19 years and I gave it everything. I turned water into wine daily because there was a severe lack of resources for the kids. Everything was a competition and in the end I lost myself, endangered my heath by not taking care of myself , and lost quality precious time with myself and with my family. There wasn't a healthy balance. When I needed a good reference I was told by one principal that I worked with for over ten years that she was too busy to give me one despite having excellent evaluations. Then I was told by the other one that he didn't know me well enough after six months to give me a reference. This was done in retaliation for the fact I left midyear due to childbirth complications and couldn't finish out the rest of the year. No good deed huh. This shows you the information given in this show is accurate. Don't go above and beyond it isn't worth it. I am homeschooling my kids and it's the best thing ever I definitely have a healthy work life balance now that I am my own boss.
How long ago was this? That is discrimination and retaliation .Dont leave it to a higher power or the lord. This is your life and they should have paid for their mistreatment. you should have filed a lawsuit
This is why I stayed home with my children, you couldn't pay me a dime to go back to work, 6 weeks pp, still "open" with leaking breasts and insomnia and be abused by people. I wish we would stop falling for the okie doke. YT women stayed home with their children for many legit reasons. The only reason they don't want to anymore is cause we aren't watching their children anymore.
She's absolutely right! I've given my all to every single position I've had, and I've continuously gotten passed over for promotions or recognition. I''m thankful, but I'm burned out at 61.
I'm a millennial and what I notice that helps your career is having your boss/superior like you aka playing into office politics. You should only go "above and beyond" as a means to an end to get what you want. Working hard, coming in early and leaving late are all meaningless if it's not valued by the people who will give you that promotion or that raise.
It doesn't work like that in education. Our pay raises are built-in and based on education and experience. This is exactly why I no longer go above and beyond. All the principals are assholes who want you to kiss their ass to get along and at nearly 50 I am not doing that. They can kick rocks.
I work my scheduled hours. Log off promptly. Give them just enough or less. Still got a performance bonus and raise. Just like the movie The Office, the less that guy did, the more he reaped rewards. I'm done, done. .
I'm retired, but still work, 2 part-time jobs. I worked 7 years for a company & was let go, because my availability didn't meet with what they "wanted". On my 2nd job, I was able to work out my availability to "adjust" for lost wages. Got a new manager & my hours went from 30/week to 15, I used to go in when they called, because the loss of money, bills had to go late or unpaid. This year, that stopped! I work my 5 hours/day, drop whatever I'm doing & leave. On my days off, they call, the answer is "NO". There's work to be done, I'm not correcting management's problem of not scheduling. I have suffered thru before & I can suffer thru now.
Leave a trail of excellence in all that you do; Invest in building relationships; Make sure your name is good in your industry. Get letters of reference from respected people who know your work if and when you leave.

I just experienced this reality. Was one of the best team members. Went above and beyond only to be looked over for several supervisory positions all at once. Never Again!
I made that decision October 2024 and now I just meet the standard. In my early years, I really worked hard and gave it my all in my military and civilian career. Now I am on cruise control because no matter how hard I work there is no recognition. I have more peace not worrying about all this performance nonsense while working for a supervisor whose leadership I don't respect. Life is too short. Meet the standard and move on if you don't plan to promote. 😊

Saw this yesterday and her words kept reverberating in my ear today. I was set to shorten my lunch break but then I quickly clocked out and ate in peace.
My Asian supervisor said these exact words "Well, you're a strong Black woman" because you can articulate yourself 😮 I was done😊 it all changed after that and I am much happier now
Same. I had an Asian coworker at a mostly Asian company, say I was so smart because I speak really good English and that most of my people don't speak good English
@user-fd9mx5hd5c I wouldn’t have. Yes, it may be “politically incorrect” and insensitive to say such a thing ( and I am an 84 year old black Doctor who has had such said to me), it is TRUE. Even though it always felt like a slap in the face to HEAR someone say that directly to my face, the statement did not differ from what I MYSELF think about the average black person‘s seeming inability to speak college level English even when they reach doctorate level. I have had several career changes. My first job was as English teacher and an inner city school system. I didn’t last very long. There was an almost inbred resistance. I’m on the kids to be taught correct verb forms. ( “That DON’T sound right, MIZZ ___” NOW you don’t even hear them use verbs AT ALL: “Where you goin’?” “She got style.” “He fine.” “What up?” All you have to do is pay attention to the plethora of black You tubers to hear it. I was born in the 40s, and the black Americans around me always had a forward, gaze filled with hope and effort to improve themselves in many ways. It started to disappear during the civil rights movement. It’s like they’ve given up, and anyone who has it is accused of sounding like they “think they are white.“ I might have given the Asian woman feedback about the statement being insensitive, and encourages her to keep it to herself, even if she thought that. But I would not have reported her to anybody for telling the truth. It seems that it’s becoming more more unsafe to say what you actually think. People just can’t handle truth. 😢
Oh my Lord, I felt the tears welling up in my eyes as I watched this. As someone who has worked in corporate for 35 years-soon to be 36 this February-this resonated with me on so many levels. It took me a long time to open my eyes, and while I still give 100%, I’ve learned to set limits. Like she said, they can drop you in a minute. We must remember: it’s a job, and there are decision-makers at the table we don’t sit at. I’m grateful for the opportunity to earn a living and the benefits that came with it. But the truth is, as Black women, we are often overlooked and overworked. Those are just the facts. This message is especially for the younger generation: learn early to make yourself a priority. Build your empire as you work on theirs. Blessings to all.
Absolutely 💯 and this also can be applicable to many black men as well and I’m not in any way implying that black men especially shouldn’t passionately work at their jobs and keep learning new skills on and off the job to better themselves. However, in my case, my husband is notoriously working 6 days a week at a job he’s been on for 24 years and though he loves what he does (he was once promoted to supervisor) and again I say, he loves what he does now, before he was promoted and all that but one fine day in the office, one of the higher ups had his butt on his shoulders and said something off the wall to my husband and my husband is one of the nicest laid back guys you’ll probably ever come across in life amongst a few other good men on this earth 🌍 but as soon as my husband said stood up for himself in the most respectful way he could (but trust me when I tell you! Old boy knew he was not one to be taken advantage of because my husband told him “If you like, I can drop back down to where I was before and be just as happy as I was!”). That guy looked at my husband and had the audacity to say “well didn’t nobody twist yo’ arm to take this position!” My husband leaned back, smiled and said “Ha 😂you sho’ right about player!” And politely told him “As of today, I’m officially stepping down from this position!” That man looked at him like he couldn’t believe my husband said that but yep 👍🏾 and to top it all off God slid my husband right on back in his previous position the next day with the same pay like “I got you covered my son!”
@@Chosen2healbyGod101 correct we must include our men as well...they get hit even harder in most cases. So amazing how when one speaks up for themselves; it's a problem...glad God was there to vindicate on your husband's behalf.
_But the truth is, as Black women, we are often overlooked and overworked._ The "we" that you are referring to is, by far, the least working demographic in America. Literally.
I learned the hard way climbing up the ladder to get terminated wrongfully. I was influential at this company with all employees and provided an employee appreciation mindset and was set up with a hard goodbye. I’ve learned, if you do your job and nothing more you win. Self care is my utmost loyalty from the experience and I take quarterly vacations. They can replace you as fast as they hired you. I’m grateful for the experience and chose to do my work as unto the Lord.
*I realized the employee value at a company when we were at a coworkers funeral and before we returned from the ceremony their job was already posted.*
I made that decision today. I have been giving my best, getting it reworked as if it's not good enough, only for it to be reused elsewhere as someone else's best. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I definitely hear what she is saying. I'm in a management position and it's beginning to affect my health. I've never had blood pressure in my life and now my blood pressure is going up on a daily, due to stress on the job. All of that and I can't even get a word of acknowledgement for all that I'm doing. I think it's about that time for me to go.
Awesome Advice!!!! No one goes to their death bed thinking I should have worked more and spent more time away from my family and from caring for myself.
So true after 16 years with a company I moved to a whole other state with them and of course with a big raise. After getting everything together I was no longer needed,
Wow, I'm so sorry you went through that, I'm sure you couldn't believe it was happening to you now you truly know your worth in the work place.... Thanks for sharing.
This message really needs to be conveyed to every young black woman AND MAN. I say this because I am certain that there are so many fellow sisters and brothers like myself who gave absolute excellence throughout their youth (20s-40s) only to realize that these jobs only took and capitalized on your sweat and sacrifice leaving you depleted with nothing to show for it but declined physical and mental health. In addition, we must know that as black people no matter how much we do or how bright our star shines, they don't want us to succeed beyond a certain point. In fact, the more you shine...the more excellence you exhibit, the more intimidated and threatened they are by you which means you will have a huge target on your back. In other words, they will make a purposeful effort to hold you back and altogether stall your growth by putting you in a box for their sole purpose and use. Do your job...no more or less; stay under the radar and collect your paycheck.
Work the system to hit your goals. And take notice of who is above you, if they even notice you, if your colleagues have goals & how they work & how they are treated. That will guide your steps. But bottom line: Before you even enter, have your exit in mind🎯🙏Krishna needs to come back to this show & make her rounds to others.
I’m going through this now and I’m very resentful. Especially since my supervisor allows whyte women to get away with any and everything and she’s so passive aggressive and harsh with us Black women.
Yes this is exactly where I'm at right now. I'm no longer going above and beyond. It's not worth it. I'm doing what is required and nothing more. Thank you for this much-needed reminder.
The corporate world is difficult. I used to work above and beyond for very little recognition. What I can share is that I have been able to get a better understanding on the rules. I have tested this and it works! I went on a course and learnt progress and getting ahead is based on 60%networking 30%brand and only 10% technical ability. I stopped the working above and beyond and focused on operating more strategically and have got more recognition than ever before. Also, more time back for me.
Going "above and beyond" got me nothing but disrespect, distress and depression. Now? I show up on time (not a minute earlier), do my job (not a thing more), and leave on time (not a minute later). Life is much, MUCH better this way.
Same here! I made this decision a few yes ago! It's so much better since I did.

You need to teach a class
Wow.
They’re always allowed to slip up and make mistakes and keep their pay
To make matters worse, the Black professional who is brought in as cleanup behind the mess of whyte incompetence is often eventually unceremoniously fired, scapegoated with blame for their whyte predecessor's incompetence and destruction, and then a new whyte replacement is installed after firing of the Black cleanup professional. The whyte replacement is then credited with the improvements made by the now fired Black cleanup professional who was fired as the fall guy.
The game is definitely rigged

Save your best effort and work for God, yourself, and your family. These employers should only get what they pay us for. I've been working for 37 years and co-sign this message! ☺️
AAAAAAAMEN!!!
Amen❤
I certainly will not go “ above and beyond” on anyone’s job! Black people are already underpaid and under appreciated no matter what we do.
I'm going to save my all for my passion projects or where I choose to serve in my community.
this
Worked my butt off at a company for 6 years. Got awards, recognition from head office and district/regional supervisors, and was getting ready for a promotion. All it took was for them to hire a manager who didn’t like me and all of that went out the window.
THIS is absolutely true! After 20 years in the workforce and 20 more to go, she is telling the absolute truth!
20 years to go 40 years HELL NO!
I’m in my 30s and I’m like oh no 30 more years of this??? 😂
Just learned this after getting the shaft a few days ago !!!worked -10-12hrs days for last 3
Months because of a promised” bonus “ only to have the goal post moved after having done the work!!! And the company and higher ups still benefitted from my work!! I’m still mad😡
Same thing happened to me...Am done
Screw that! Although i am wiser i am also bitter! 😅 idc either because the bitterness fuels me.
I would never be that superwoman for my job. These employers don't care about their employees!
Ima Black Man and my old Boss a (white man) told me this some years ago and i started it last year after seeing how unappreciated my efforts were.
Appreciation is for at home. You should be compensated and treated well, not abused. Never expect to be appreciated.
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad things are working out better for you!

I hear….but you had choices……don’t be bitter,
She's absolutely right! I've given my all to every single position I've had, and I've continuously gotten passed over for promotions or recognition. I''m thankful, but I'm burned out at 61.
True story!!! 👏🏽
I will not go above and beyond again. Going above and beyond got me out the door, but now I see it as a blessing in disguise!
Exactly.
Yep, building those relationships are key
It doesn't work like that in education. Our pay raises are built-in and based on education and experience. This is exactly why I no longer go above and beyond. All the principals are assholes who want you to kiss their ass to get along and at nearly 50 I am not doing that. They can kick rocks.
I work my scheduled hours. Log off promptly. Give them just enough or less. Still got a performance bonus and raise. Just like the movie The Office, the less that guy did, the more he reaped rewards. I'm done, done. .
You are doing your job
I appreciate that my job has metrics so I can meet my performance requirements with as little effort as possible.
Great advice. Thanks for watching! 😊
Right. I am not in the business of doing trash work. I will give my best in the time allotted then I lock my computer and go downstairs😂
Great advice, thanks!
@@NODE1975 Exactly. Unfortunately my employees that hold back - it's obvious. I know what they're capable of, and I know when they're not bringing their A-Game. And those that don't - don't last very long. Hard work is not enough. Relationships are essential. Too many black folks think that if they just work hard, they don't have to build and cultivate relationships. This is so so so incredibly false.
@@roots1458 I agree with that. I always ask them if they made friends at school growing up, in high school or college. We spend most of our waking hours at work. My two best friends both do this and they are miserable at work. They like their jobs but all they do is complain about their coworkers. The irony, one of them, I met at work over 20 years ago 😂
This is such an EYE OPENER!! Companies do not appreciate you. I’ve seen so much from being in the workforce for many moons now. I tell all my co workers especially the younger ones…Should you passed away today, your position will be up and opened the next day! So always take care of you first! What Chris B say …These companies are not loyal…lol
This was definitely meant for me. Lately, I’ve been leaving work feeling physically and mentally exhausted. This is further confirmation for me to step back from the heavy work load. I pray that I’ll be consistent with putting myself first.
You must be INTENTIONAL on putting your first sis.
I'm praying things will get better God bless
I started working at 14 and just turned 50 and just realized this week that I’m no longer standing out like that anymore. Everything she said was facts. I can write a book on how I was, no, how I am still being treated in the work place.
The minute I stopped working hard and started working smart, putting me first, I felt a million times better. I will never work like that again
You have to keep the scales balanced. Your job is your job, but you have to keep the main thing the main thing. I am not going to say not to do your best, but your job is your job. Protect your spirit, your family and your mental health.
I like the statement, “Do your best but don’t give your all.”
A work injury caused me to open my eyes 👀. I didn’t even get a get well card and been on the job over 14 years. I loved my job and my residents. I’m 55 years young and on SSDI temporarily.
"Are you willing to pay the cost regards you health and mental well being " NO! not anymore. I pray I get a new job in a better ENVIRONMENT that allows me to have lunch NOT AT MY DESK and to not be called by old tropes like 'angry black woman' when I assert myself, my rights to privacy and PTO! God please deliver me from a toxic workplace and transplant me into new soil where I can thrive, be healthy to serve His purpose in this life🙏🏽I needed to hear this message today and see the comments on this topic. All the best to everyone who has shared their experiences so that others like me can know they're not alone. Hot topic on TikTok too, under workplace trauma. Have a blessed day❣️
Saw this yesterday and her words kept reverberating in my ear today. I was set to shorten my lunch break but then I quickly clocked out and ate in peace.
Omg this resonates with me on so many levels. I fell all the way back and confirms that I made the right decision
I gave my all to my old company, they didn't even give me a severance payment at the end of my employment there.
My Asian supervisor said these exact words "Well, you're a strong Black woman" because you can articulate yourself 😮
I was done😊 it all changed after that and I am much happier now
Let me say I loathe when people say “a strong Black woman” you never hear “a strong Asian woman, a strong White woman, etc….” It bothers me so much.
@@SidegigfairyI’ve only heard Black American women make that claim, in my years living in this country. I
Same. I had an Asian coworker at a mostly Asian company, say I was so smart because I speak really good English and that most of my people don't speak good English
@user-fd9mx5hd5c I wouldn’t have.
( “That DON’T sound right, MIZZ ___”
NOW you don’t even hear them use verbs AT ALL: “Where you goin’?” “She got style.” “He fine.” “What up?”
All you have to do is pay attention to the plethora of black You tubers to hear it.
I was born in the 40s, and the black Americans around me always had a forward, gaze filled with hope and effort to improve themselves in many ways.
It started to disappear during the civil rights movement. It’s like they’ve given up, and anyone who has it is accused of sounding like they “think they are white.“
I might have given the Asian woman feedback about the statement being insensitive, and encourages her to keep it to herself, even if she thought that. But I would not have reported her to anybody for telling the truth.
It seems that it’s becoming more more unsafe to say what you actually think. People just can’t handle truth.
😢
@@thealchemist333 Yikes! I wonder how their English sound? Or their grandmother's English? 😕
Build an empire as you work on theirs
Damn 😢

The "we" that you are referring to is, by far, the least working demographic in America. Literally.
This is CONFIRMATION. 🙌

So true. Work should not be at the expense of your health. Been there done that. Suffered for it too.
I can DEFINITELY identify. It's time to embark on a new horizon.
Don’t look for man to acknowledge you, the Bible states for us to do our work unto the Lord and He only will award you!

You’re one of them? Do you talk to people before you clock in?
@supermodelatlanta1354 I'm cordial. I greet everyone, but that's it.
Excellent advice! I’m not anybody’s work mule!
Going above and beyond got me more work, health issues, and chronic stress. I stopped doing that in my 20’s. Now I work my wage nothing more.
Quality work within boundaries and leave it at that. Got it!
Boundaries are key.
Exactly!!
Is your supervisor white or black?
Please don't stay
Start looking for something else and pray.
