    Love the old cards. Played Beta to Ice Age. Had a big selloff in 96 to pay for college. Wish I didn't have to sell them (Complete Revised, Arabian, and Antiquities). Watching your channel brings back great memories. I can't afford ABU now so I started collecting Collectors Edition.

      It’s a good time to be collecting CE! Sounds like an awesome collection you had… Ice Age remains one of my favorites, purely from a nostalgic point of view. I loved the set’s immersive theme.

      I love Collector's Edition. It's a great way to get nice old black border cards (but you probably already know this)

    There once was a man with a horde,
    Comprised entirely out of cardboard.
    Though the market has turns,
    He shows no concerns,
    For in the end, their value has soared! 🍀

    Always beautiful cards and in impeccable condition. Raging River is very cool.

    I recently discovered your channel as I have been shifting to the collecting side of mtg. Love the content and appreciate the sharing of your collection/pickups. I decided to collect vintage magic cards from ABU as well as the sets from Urza's and before. Really loving the research aspect and learning the ins and outs on what to look for. I just made my first big purchase of a Lion's eye diamond that was in great condition at my LGS.
    Really appreciate your approach and how you advise people to focus on personal finance first before getting into it. Not many hype driven MTG channels mention that. So thank you for reiterating that importance!

    I enjoyed this type of format too! Appreciate the forward nature of the approach.Feels like sitting there shooting the shit with a friend. Even 1 complete set of alpha is impressive! Like you’ve said all along, do what you love and there really is no downside or right or wrong. Keep on keeping on man! 🤘

    Nice! I still question the strategy of collecting so many commons. But appreciated the talk and sharing. Just seems to me that NM commons or uncommons w misprints and rares are the best investable examples.
    I appreciate you answering my question about other investment vehicles.

    • @AlphaHoarder
      @AlphaHoarder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree despite my particular hoarding habits. Fewer higher valued cards are much easier to liquidate than piles of lower valued cards IMO. I’m in a strange place between investing and collecting, so I definitely make some suboptimal choices if analyzed purely from an investment standpoint. Thanks as always for watching 👍

    Appreciate the honesty!
    Im an RN and my wife is the self employed tech PhD who is still figuring out how to make a good income.
    So I’m the main income now and it isn’t a lot, but we live comfortably!
    I still can’t afford purchasing the alpha that I wish I could, but maybe she will get to that point!
    I only buy what I can actually afford and am always saving for Real estate, but I need to be able to put down at least %50 of the property to feel comfortable, so I need to save together like 100k and I’m not quite there! Get closer every paycheck though!

    • @AlphaHoarder
      @AlphaHoarder  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a wise approach to realestate. It slows your acquisition rate if you are planning on building a larger portfolio, but it reduce your risk and increases your cash flow, which I’ve personally found to be a better configuration. Keep fighting the good fight and you will get there! Also, mad appreciation for what you do! You didn’t mention your specific RN work, but I know (through my wife) how physically and emotionally demanding that field can be, and I admire those that carry that burden willingly 🤜🤛

    Hey man - I know you have that episode on liquidity, but at some point would you mind discussing/speculating how you would liquidate your entire collection IF you wanted to? Would you sell it piece by piece on Ebay, sell as an entire collection to an auction house, etc.? Just curious. I don't ever plan on selling, but at the same time, it would be nice to have a strategy in place.

    • @AlphaHoarder

    Your playgroup sounds like mine. We've been together (when we can) for almost 25 years. Kitchen table Magic is the most fun I've had playing, with those unspoken rules that keep everything "honorable". (There's no honor with blowing someone out or hating on your friends (COP's)).

    • @AlphaHoarder
      @AlphaHoarder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! Yes, it is a kind of honor code. We play to have fun, and some cards/decks, especially if unbalanced compared to your playgroup, just ruins everyone’s evening.

  • @penguinlust6749

    Animate Dead is uncommon, not rare (yes, a list in Shadis in the first days of MtG listed it as rare -- it was wrong). Great to see the cards as always.
    As to the number of whales and to their size and frequency. They are few and far between, and most are hidden from view, and more have sold out over the years.
    As to what qualifies as a whale? That's tricky. Need to give that some thought.

    • @AlphaHoarder
      @AlphaHoarder  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah did I say rare in the video? 🤦‍♂️ There’s a couple I endlessly confuse, that’s one as well as Berserk and Hypnotic Specter. Not sure why I can’t sort those out in my head lol.
      As for whale size, yeah I don’t know either. As you said a lot is private or second hand, possibly double counted, etc.

    • @penguinlust6749
      @penguinlust6749 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlphaHoarder You said "Three rares" when you had three cards showing -- the other two are rare and the third card was the Animate Dead. It was a mistake that I had to correct more than a few times back in 1993 due to the semi-accurate Shadis list (they took a stab at figuring it out before WotC published anything, so I give them some slack), so it triggered me. There were a couple of other inaccuracies in that list, but I'd have to hunt it down again (I have the issue it's in -- somewhere) to list them all.
