She has one of the best voices in the world. I am not even a fanatic. This song is absolutely perfect. Her soul is incredible, whether you like her songs or not.
@@kentamplin hey Ken. I am a fan of your music courses and reactions. Keep up the great material. If possible I would love to see your reaction to Keke Wyatt with a song of your choosing. She's a great vocalist that flies under the radar. Just would like to see your reaction to her musical prowess
“She sings to show off her voice a lot.” - with that range, color, tone, variances, ability, NATURAL talent honed by professional skills picked up, also its a live performance: the fact it resembles the original final mix is astounding. It would be a SIN to not sing to show off her voice. It would be a a disservice to fans, to musucality, to her empire, her God-given talent. *let us not confuse that as “showcasing for sake of flaunting.* Also: kindly (and respectfully, I beg you to notice everyone you compared her to- there’s a very distinct difference between she & these other epic women. One that people would burn me at the stake for mentioning: but the fact that Xtina can compete with these epic all time greats (which all have something obvious in common, and outrageous talent indeed, no argument there) ...but it IS truly noteworthy and remarkable Christina is in their category altogether! Radical movements won’t let me say that though I have only love and respect for all: but, nevertheless: Talent is talent; and Christina’s is inimitable. Thanks for the video. Would love to see more of your setup. 👍
My father sings in a church choir to, like I do, he also sings in a men’s group called Singing Men Of West Texas, he has been singing with this group for quite sometime.
Being a Christina Aguilera fan I agree she does does tend to show off a lot, getting away from the focus from the songs. But when she really focuses, she's excellent. Back to Basics era was one of the best balanced era. Now on tour, live she's gotten MUCH better with it. She's definitely one of the best emotive vocalist. Also want to to note she was sick during this performance, as somebody else noted as well. Great analysis. Love how you showed ways to reproduce the song, whether her way, or a more healthier technique.
Early on, when Christina was just emerging on the music scene, I tended to dismiss her as just another pop tart. The revelation as to how incredibly talented she is, came during one of those "New Years Rockin' Eve" shows, where all the music performances were live. In a show that featured one lackluster performance after another, Christina was a supernova, and the memory of that has always stuck with me.
Yay! My favorite female singer and my favorite vocal coach. Thanks for your actual help with my love/career right now. I agree, I wish she 'showed off" a little less. Check "Walk Away', from the Letterman show.
This is a beautiful and touching song. I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer in 2007 which was probably right around the time this song was released. this song may have been released a year or two prior, but they still played it on the radio frequently. The thing I noticed with Christina’s performance, as well as many other more modern vocalists, is that they do tend to be more showy as you say. They also Rely solely on their vocals and not enough on their diaphragm muscles. I was doing show choir when I was 16 years old and in musicals. I was the lead in Oliver Twist, and I didn’t have the luxury of a microphone. Lord, I wish I did at the time. It’s extremely difficult but I was glad to learn how to play musical instruments at a very young age and then start singing older because I already had that diaphragm training. Vocalists like Aretha Franklin awesome because they use their powerhouse along with the power of the diaphragm muscle. It makes a huge difference. This song is so soft and that she doesn’t really need to use that much power behind it, but she and other more modern day vocalists do rely completely on their throats & too showy as you mentioned.
It only took me 43 years to learn that the difference between those that became SUCCESSFUL, and those who didn't, was their ability to HOLD ON and PERSIST in the face of less than desireable, often bleak, circumstances and/or environments. Just. Hold. On.
Hmmm, not necessarily... It depends on your definition on "Hold on". Applying it to the situation of Harvey Weinstein & the numerous actresses who became renowned & won Oscars, gives a whole new dimension to the phrase "Hold On"...
Being a brazilian/italian, thank you for sharing english captions, it helps a lot to understand every single point of what you said. I like your reviews, good job!
This was a really informative reaction, and I totally agree that some of her best performances/songs are those were she is "showing off" her voice a bit less. A vocal analysis/reaction of her live performance of "walk away" would be awesome if you get the chance - it really showcases the more "raw" and soulful side of her voice.
Great reaction! Completely agree about her technique and the ways it could be improved. Also worth noting that this song was actually written by Linda Perry about her father who had recently passed. Christina's father, while not a part of her life, is still living. But again, great reaction!
About showing example by doing yourself i agree 100% There are so many coaches that obly talk and can't really demonstrate what they teach. I only know few coaches that can demonstrate and do it great. That's why I'm subscribed here.
She has great emotional songs where she really just show her feelings. Songs like besutiful, oh mother. lift me up . and im ok are for me her best songs. Also the ballads and slower songs in burlesque album are good.
Brethren Ken, I showed your voice to my mum and she said that your talk voice is amazing, and she likes your high notes, because your voice have volume.
Kelly Clarkson’s song “because of you” had the same feeling as this. It’s so personal , you can empathize with the artists. The Human Experience..... Life,Loss Heartbreak, go on with life.
I always learn so much from these videos that you do Ken. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom to all of us amateur singers. I find it hysterical that's so many people are so negative about Christina saying she can't sing! I tell these people you're either deaf or completely ignorant. Thanks for your insights on this as always. God bless coach
I honestly respect with all my heart Christina Aguilera as a singer i love her she sounds unique and its impossible not to want to hear her sing with her style of technique she gets you to feel that emotion she is transmitting through her voice i like that so much.
I love Christina! I also agree that she likes to show off her voice 🤣 You should react to her song walk away. The studio version and the live version. For me it´s her best song, how she makes you feel what she is feeling. I could feel it when I was 12 and didn´t even understand english haha!
the most beautiful thing about music....is we're all taking the same notes....and making different choices. You're clearly one of the best coaches out there. The proof is in the singing. I even refer people when i'm out playing music, or in a band and run up on a singer who's struggling with something.....distortion, getting into and out of all the diffefferent registers, vowel modifcation, good support, all those thing you talk about to your singing course all the time. the froggy thing, the smaller notes, singing a line different.....those are just the choices she made. it's an imperfect beautiful performance. "i'd like to have heard her do this there" .. well. I do it too with guitar players...so i get it. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to say....maybe...just because someone makes different choices than you or I would want to hear em make, doesn't make those choices wrong. I'm glad we all don't do it perfectly and sound the same. that's part of what makes it so interesting and beautiful.
Aesthetically, there is indeed no right or wrong when it comes to a singer's stylistic choices. The problem is it is very easy to hurt your voice with improper technique, especially for someone like her who has done and is presently doing tours. From the very first tour back in 2000, she has had to cancel shows due to vocal injuries. It could be due to other things as well and not necessarily just that froggy thing or not singing those softer lines with an open enough throat. But the point is she does things which appear to harm her voice even if they may sound sonorous on the recording.
This is my first video of yours I've watched and I've gotta say, I love how you break things down and explain everything. As a Christina fan of 20 years, I agree she does show her voice off with all the tricks a lot....but I love that haha
I’m a new subscriber. I love everything about you and your page. You’re so talented too. And you can sing unlike a few vocal coaches I’ve seen on here. I respect you and am learning a lot.
I think when you sing this kind of song and singing with lots of emotions, sounds like Christina was crying too and wearing a corset also cuts off some air when Christina decided to fall on her knees then sat. I also noticed that someone tried to touch or pull her dress lol
I lose control of my breath when I get more emotional as I sing because mentally I'm distracted and put more focus on singing the words and feeling the vocals instead of actually having the breath to support myself. When I was younger I never knew how to actually breathe properly and trained myself that way until I was 13 and had 3 opera lessons and then choir in high school.
Christina has one of the most beautiful and soulful voices in pop music. Most of her songs also fit her voice really well. But she tends to sound pitchy here and there when she's performing live. She also struggles a lot to sing in upper register because of her singing style. Most of the time, she sounds flat and throaty when singing in upper register.
+ Awesome video! Keep up the fantastic work. Quick note, I recall watching this at the Video Music Awards of that year. And I specifically recall a short interview someone from Access Hollywood I believe was able to land when they caught up with Christina after the show had ended, in which she mentioned she wished she would have re-thought her outfit during the performance. She cited the Tight Corset being a bit of a challenge. Ha ha ha!
I love her. Christina's voice is legendary. She was sick, could have done lip sync, but she sang live and still sounded amazing. This song is a masterpiece.
I absolutely agree with you about showing off. I never liked that about Christina. Over-using melismas, runs... This is the only performance of hers I ever said it is perfect. She showed off her emotions, this time and it was beautiful.
I've been a fan of her for a very long time, so I agreed with everything you said. The first and second verse were very good dynamically but whenever the key raises, her tension such as vowel, throat and jaw are becoming evident and worse, the strain too. She has a better performance than this where pitch is fine and she made embellishments and more relaxed approach. I totally love the knowledge and honesty you have!
Please react to Mariah's Carey performance America the beautiful 1990 or Vision of love arshhenio hall 1990 first performance... I think that theese two performances are some of the best "soul" performances of the 90s.
