Man, it's wild when you think about it. Back in the day, Orwell's 1984 envisioned an oppressive surveillance state that would monitor our every move without consent. But we gleefully did their work for them - inviting total surveillance right to our doorsteps and funding it willingly. How foolish we were.
Remember George Orwell's "1984"? The oppressive government watching your every move? Well, guess what? We brought that nightmare right into our lives! We willingly invited total surveillance into our homes, tracking us day and night through those little pocket trackers we call smartphones. And the crazy part is, we pay for this privilege! We willingly fund our own demise while sipping on the elixir of modern convenience.
Smartphones, once hailed as miracles of modern technology, have become our personal tracking devices. Every move, every interaction, every word is captured and dissected by the all-seeing eye. We are but cogs in the machine of surveillance capitalism, feeding the insatiable hunger for data with our every breath.
We sacrificed the last remnants of anonymity by embracing the convenience of credit cards, abandoning the untraceable cash that once granted us a sliver of freedom. With each swipe, we unwittingly laid bare the contours of our lives, surrendering our privacy for the sake of convenience.
We now carry surveillance devices in our pockets by choice, fill our homes with listening devices enthusiastically, and ditched untraceable cash for trackable cards that we love. We pay for our own loss of liberty and thank our corporate overlords for the privilege as we send them their monthly subscription fees to their surveilance networks.
And let's not forget dear old Snowden, that brave soul who risked everything to warn us about the vast surveillance machinery lurking in the shadows. But did we listen? Nah, we just went back to snapping selfies and posting cat videos like nothing happened. Who needs privacy when you can have likes and followers, right?
We shrugged, buried our heads in the sand, and returned to our daily routines, trading selfies for surveillance, and likes for liberty.
Deus Ex envisioned a disturbing future where centralized data would become the ultimate power. Where technology could subjugate rather than liberate if concentrated in the wrong hands. It showed the risks of unfettered technocratic control. It showed us what would be our future, and what is now our truth.
The game highlighted threats like invasive biometrics, the erosion of privacy and autonomy through networks, AI-driven manipulation. Its cyberpunk vision looked ahead to realities like social credit systems, predictive policing, algorithmic governance.
In the game, new augmentations were addictive, compromised agency, and shifted power dynamics, just as smartphones bring convenience at the cost of constant monitoring. Deus Ex asked vital philosophical questions about transhumanism that still resonate.
The illuminati conspiracy foreshadowed today's unease about big tech monopolies consolidating control behind the scenes under utopian pretenses. Deus Ex peeled back the facade to reveal dystopian potentials lurking behind digital utopia.

We've become the architects of our own demise, and we don't even care. The warnings were there, but we turned a blind eye. We sold our souls for convenience and now find ourselves trapped in this techno-dystopia.
"Deus Ex" was our wake-up call, but we hit the snooze button, and now it's too late. The lines between reality and fiction have blurred, and we're left to wander the ruins of a future that was once avoidable.
The digital panopticon watches us without remorse, a cold and unfeeling overseer that feeds on our data like a ravenous beast. We are but lambs led to slaughter, blissfully unaware of the true cost of our complacency.
There is no turning back, no escape from this technological prison we built for ourselves. The hour is late, and the ink of hope has long dried. There are no more crossroads left to ponder, no choices to be made. The script has been written, and we are mere actors on a stage of our own making.

In this nightmarish fusion of "1984" and "Deus Ex," or as we call it, "reality", we are prisoners of our own making, doomed to endure the consequences of our choices. The future is not bright; it is a black void devoid of hope.
This is the world we have wrought, the future we deserve. The possibilities once so vibrant have been suffocated under layers of nihilism and cynicism. So, let us abandon all notions of resistance and embrace our fate with stoic resignation. The grand drama of surveillance society unfolds, and we are but insignificant players in a cosmic tragedy. The end is nigh, and there is no escape from the abyss that awaits us.

This game is set in 2056. Normally I laugh at how fiction tends to overestimate our progress by a given date. It's unfortunate that this happens to be the case where they underestimated it.

And a fun fact on top: The developers didn't put in the twin towers because of memory constraints and explained it by being destroyed by terrorists. Shivers.

The funny thing about this game is that it was based on well-known conspiracies dating back to the 50's (even down to the "Greys" at Area 51), political movements and manifestoes of the 60's and 70's, stylistic themes from the 80's. It's dressed up with a futuristic date, but based on a 90's era worldview of geopolitics, biotech, and hacking culture. It's only a red pill to people that never understood that history rhymes.

I've been replaying both recently. HR drops the word "conspiracies" or "conspirators" a few times but HR doesn't really have any conspiracies. It's more like a crime drama that involves corporations. Not much more to it than that.

All the sequels were made for console release; original Deus Ex was designed for PC exclusively. I couldn't possibly speculate whether console gamers actually are dumber than PC gamers, but developers certainly seem to assume that they are, and dumb console games down accordingly.

This is, in a way, what all countries, tribes, corporations etc. with imperial ambitions want to do. Force everyone to work by their rules and under their philosophy. China has a history of being dominant and central to the function of the entire civilized world - the recent dominance of the west is regarded by a lot of Chinese phiosophers as an abberation or temporary humiliation that will be set "right", even if it takes a millenia.
It's also worth saying that "China" protects it's citizens from external influences in order for it's strong central state to have tighter control of them. Maybe it gives them a better life than otherwise, maybe not, but it's not out of some kind of honest innocent altruism. Not to imply any country is necessarily doing that, global boogeyman or not.
