The central government has stated that children below the age of 18 must have parental or guardian consent to create accounts on social media platforms.
This proposal is part of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 draft rules released by the government 2 weeks back.
This initiative was taken by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The draft rules aim to ensure that the data of children and individuals with disabilities is protected under legal frameworks.
Any app or organisation on the internet handling personal data must obtain parental or guardian consent before dealing with children's data.
To verify consent, relevant parties must use government-issued identity cards or digital identity tokens like DigiLocker.
Consumers are allowed to request the deletion of their data or seek transparent explanations from the app about why their data is collected.
And, if the company has made any mistakes, there will be fines of up to ₹250 crores.
The draft rules clearly define digital intermediaries, such as e-commerce companies, online gaming providers, and social media platforms, and create specific rules for them.
Balancing the safety and privacy of individuals, especially children in the digital world, is the parent's responsibility.
The government is working hard to bring safety in the digital age, and at the same time we should also work with children.
