Wonderful compilation of key info on the Pitts! Two side notes. My Dad and a college roommate held a ribbon cut by Betty Skelton (I have a photo somewhere of it). Also Dad stayed friends with Curtis (and Ma) over the years - until the end. Curtis was an amazing designer!
Went up in a two seater custom for my 21st birthday - As we taxied down the runway the pilot asked if I'd ever been up in a plane before, I confessed to a few fights in Cessna, he chuckled and told me I might as well say no and popped the rotten thing directly upwards after what felt like a few metres up the runway. Crazy mobility and the G-dial is in easy view to scare the crap out of any passenger who knows what they're looking at.
Anyone know where I might find footage of the 1972 U.S. national aerobatics championships? My Dad was in the advanced category. Looking for footage because we have only one grainy and out of focus footage of him doing stunts.
Two Pitts Specials were the leading characters in 1980 movie Cloud Dancer :-) The movie is about an aerobatics champion. Not much of a plot, but lots of airplanes, real footage, not FX.

Woooow very interesting... It made me feel melancholic about airshows... I'm looking forward to being to an airshow again.
