I agree with you on the gain stuff when it comes to recording. Anytime you're double tracking guitars, you're going to achieve a lot more fullness and saturation than single tracked, so you dont need as much gain. That said, if you're playing solo, just practicing or playing along with stuff for fun or whatever, turning up the gain is often necessary or else your tone is gonna be way too weak. Also depends a whole lot on the type of metal you're playing. If you're playing a lot of sort of melodic hardcore type stuff, then yea, keep the gain down in order to make your chord shapes ring clearer, but if you're playing stuff with a lot of palm muted power chord breakdowns and shit, crank up the gain a bit. A lot of preference is at play here, too. Just saying - more gain can be better at times. Though there is a limit, of course.
Depends on what type of OD you're using. Some are flabby while others are dynamic. Even changing the amp or speakers/IR will drastically change the tone and therefore change the way you play.

This is the best walkthrough on dialing in amp sim tones that I’ve found. Really well done. I appreciate how I’m depth you took this tutorial. Gives me a lot to try because I’ve been struggling with how to get a great sound from my amp sims. Well done! Thank you sir!
Ok, subscribed and like. This is THE most detailing and properly guiding how-to-dial-your-tone video I've seen in YT. 1000 thanks mate. It doesn't matter if I don't use the same plugins as you. I got the general idea around what to consider first and what next.
I have been using the Plini plugin pretty much as long as it’s been out and I usually do the same thing minus the cab and the master volume knob (due to lack of knowledge). Thanks for giving me a better understanding of those areas of the plugin
P.S. great vid. I’ve been playing for some time and while I’m an above average guitar player, I never got around to learning how to create great tones on purpose. Sometimes I’d get lucky (and when I still played shows, believe it or not, my drummer set my tone hahaha) but I learned a lot from this.
I have the Plini and because I'm only playing a little while I was mostly using the presets so I could focus on playing rather than messing about with settings. This video was quite informative for dialing in myself. Currently testing the new Neural DSP Omega Ampworks Granophyre and it looks like I'm about to crack open my wallet again. It's simply amazing.
Great vid again, lots of quality tips and tricks. A Neural DSP amp sim shoot out would make for some insightful viewing. I was shopping around for info a few months ago on which package to go with.. I ended up going with Abasi, loving the presets an all the user presets that i can dial in an tweak. I had issues originally with lots of background hiss noise when recording, but have found gain staging within my DAW to between -20dB to -30dB helped incredibly. Even though i was watching the input and clipping from my Audio Interface, and using a DI, it was the gain staging in my DAW that made the difference
This is awesome. Thanks so much. I usually get lost in chasing the tones I like to hear. You've outlined a really helpful path towards killer tone. Keep up the great videos :-)
Hey man! Great video....I am just getting into all this "interface" stuff (I'm old) and found this SUPER informative. I've browsed some other videos, but havent found anything as helpful as this one! A clean settings guide would dope. Thanks!
Such a creative approach to it. The idea of dialling off master on the amp and drive on the pedal are insane to me but that outcome is incredible. Exactly what I’m looking for at the minute too so this came at a great time for me. Thanks for sharing this!
Yeah he also had the idea of cranking the volume on the precision drive to improve the palm mutes which I never knew about and I've had the pedal for like 4 years
Ive played guitar for many many years but ive never been very good at dialing in tone on sims. This absolutely turned my trash tones into something usable on archetype plini. Thank you so much
If i may add something. Instead of stopping playing and adjusting settings constantly like a real amp, take advantage of the fact it's a plugin. Record a di track of you playing the particular part you're creating the tone for (like in the case if you're creating a rhythm tone, record a 20 sec rhythm di track) and THEN start changing settings after you armed the di track with the plugin of your choice and loop the track. Makes things way more streamlined and immediate
Thank you verr very much. Without big "effekts" or "Screens" this gentleman calmly explain - perfectly - what it needs to record really nice tone! Thak you man. Happy Eastern
Hey This is amazing ! I've played for years however, I just randomly move knobs until I feel I get something I like but without any criteria whatsoever, I'm glad you went through explaining your own logic and the actual expected results from going to max or min. This' been really helpful ! Thanks!
It's important to take the acoustics of the room into account too. Sometimes, not finding the right tone could simply mean there are too many things screwing with the acoustics in the room you're in. In the case of headphones, maybe they just suck for this task.
One of the things I always like to do when trying to fit a guitar in a mix with a bass is to lower almost all the bass frequencies. Some of the best Djent mixes to my ears have not so much bass frequencies in the guitar, but a have high bass guitar volumes, not too much to drown out other instruments. I also have loved tones that are from double or more tracked than once guitars and for my own music I would rather record double tracked guitar parts with lower than full gain than use full gain on an amp, but sometimes I like to place an overdrive pedal with the amp.
A great guideline to follow man! Overall everyone has their preferences and the only real way to get good at dialing in tones is just going to be the amount of experience with mix testing. Dialing in a tone is something you need to practice

Judging amps with different IR's is like judging the meat used to make a hamburger with different types of cheese and sauce. Finding the right IR is the secret to a good tone. The cab, speakers, mic, and placement matters more than anything else in the chain.
My only objection and sort of question is why take your guitar to someone to set up when if you’ve been playing for years and if you have more than one guitar you should be at the point to set your own guitar up even if you have little string buzz it’s not like that will destroy your tone. After about your 3rd time changing your strings on your guitar you should be able to adjust string height, intonation, and neck relief by yourself and know that if turning or changing something one way and you’re getting buzz it could be one of three things or a combination you learn to do it.
Keyan Houshmand Live that stuff too I understand but those are some things that should be done before the guitar leaves a factory. That’s why it’s good to be careful of what you get in a store so it’s good to try before you buy but I do agree
Have you tried the Archetype Nolly? What do you think is better Plini or Nolly for Prog Rock/Prog Metal like Dream Theater, Haken, Caligulas Horse etc. Tried both but it's hard to choose. Thanks for an answer.
Hi, thanks for doing this video, found it very helpful. It helped a lot to see your whole thought process. With other videos, I try to copy the settings and see if I get the same sound, but it’s so much more helpful to see how you reason the whole thing and how you get to the final result.
Hey, I really enjoy your videos, they’re really informative for metal guitar players. Could you do a video about writing metal riffs, in the style of periphery cause I can’t figure out how to make my riffs sound like periphery ( i don’t get how to use the little notes in between the chords and i think that this is what makes the periphery style). It would really help if you do a video about that. Have a nice day.
Keyan Houshmand Live thanks i checked i’m still having a few problems with the little solo-y parts between the chords but i’ll try to figure it out. For you, do you play arpeggios of the chords for these or do you pick notes from the scale to make these melodies? Sorry to take some of your time but you’re helpint me a lot
Amazing video thanks a lot !! I'm really curious about how to play with the master knob. It seems like people tend to raise it much more than lower it and it sounded really good like you did.
Great information as always, and great presentation skills as well. After you set up your cab's I began to notice that this amp sim is hard to make sound bad. Said another way I could see someone finding a useful tone even at reasonably extreme settings. Although you did dial each knob in one at a time, extreme settings on more than one at a time might sound bad such as if presence and treble were both set at a 9. When I tried the Neural products I felt that the Plini rig was my favorite so that might be a factor in my opinion here.
I also wanted to add a question: Which Neural product is your favorite? It seems that I share the same musical tastes as you and like I said I really liked the Plini best out of them all. There weren't any that I do not like but there is a decent gap from my favorite to my least favorite. I have a really old PC and the Plini seemed the easiest on my system (the dreaded clicks and pops) but that's not the reason for me liking it best. Reverb is the one thing that for me causes the most trouble in that regard and that's not just with Neural VST's. I get the absolute best results regarding click and pops with THU - Have you ever tried it? Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Thanks for this video. I've been struggling with a disgusting muddy ass tone and I can see now it's because I made many mistakes which you helped clarify. Thanks!
Hey man just finished up the video really good stuff! I’ve never fully understood how to dial in tones like that but definitely will be using this as a good tool! Thanks for the great Content! :)
Great video! I try to use a similar process with my Helix, the hardest part is getting the right levels of gain. Can never tell if Ive dialed too much or too little, and I do use the palm mute blooms to try and gauge it. I sure end up spending too much of my playing time tweaking instead of practicing haha.
@Jeremy Conner Have you ever connected the helix 1/4 inch out into the return of a tube amp? Without using the 4 cable method? It sounds awesome for my band and it's quicker than 4 cable method (I play loud alternative rock with loads of distorted riffs fuzz and bluesy cleans)
@Jeremy Conner hey, I think he means use the real amp for its power section only, and use the amp models/preamps in the amp for the tone. So no you couldn't put the Helix screamer in front of your real amp because your skipping the front of it and just using it for volume. I recommend giving this a try, you might be surprised at how the helix amp models sound when they then go through a real power amp and real cab in the room. Personally Im happy using the Helix, that and I dont own a real high gain amp haha
But does reducing volume knob can help if DI is not available? It does seem to reduce gain in my case before the interface but also I feel tone is changed too under the fingers.
Well, that cured the ID-10-T error message between the keyboard and the guitar at my house for clipping!!🤣 This stupid human was using the faders over here-Wooooo-huge difference! Neural DSP user as well. Much thanks!! Subscribed!!!!!
Great video! I just have one doubt, why most guitar amp / cab plugins lack of high frequencies / upper harmonics? I dunno how to explain it, but I feel like playing with real amps feels way different because of the way the cabs perform the upper harmonics produced by of the tubes of the amp. The only cab sim that has only worked for me in this sense is Amplitube 4 (the cab section, bypassing the amps), for the way it simulates the acoustics of the room, but trying out these new cab sims like the ones from Neural DSP or ML Sound Lab, I feel there aren't these harmonics or acoustics creating that feel of true-ness. Is there a way to get them with any plugin?

Really good advice my man, only watched 1 of your videos but I'm subscribing as it looks like you got tons of useful videos up. ✌️
Those things are easy enough but things like nut height/slotting and fret levelling is rather leave it to the pros
Keyan Houshmand Live that stuff too I understand but those are some things that should be done before the guitar leaves a factory. That’s why it’s good to be careful of what you get in a store so it’s good to try before you buy but I do agree
One of the most helpful videos I've seen. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Enjoyed every minute. Great tone, great playin'! Keep it on. Greetz
Thanks dude! Glad you enjoyed it
Have you tried the Archetype Nolly? What do you think is better Plini or Nolly for Prog Rock/Prog Metal like Dream Theater, Haken, Caligulas Horse etc. Tried both but it's hard to choose. Thanks for an answer.
Hi, thanks for doing this video, found it very helpful. It helped a lot to see your whole thought process. With other videos, I try to copy the settings and see if I get the same sound, but it’s so much more helpful to see how you reason the whole thing and how you get to the final result.
I have that same interface and it's a mess to get a good signal. This confirms to me that I need to get a DI box. Thanks dude!
Just came across your channel the other day and love your content man. Subbed for sure 🤘🏼
I have plenty videos on this stuff dude, check how to play modern metal! Thanks man
Keyan Houshmand Live thanks i checked i’m still having a few problems with the little solo-y parts between the chords but i’ll try to figure it out. For you, do you play arpeggios of the chords for these or do you pick notes from the scale to make these melodies?
Sorry to take some of your time but you’re helpint me a lot
Really helpfull. As usually. Thanks again!
The video itself is super helpful, but to watch you play is just super inspiring. Take my sub!
Do you play in a band or make your own music? Would honestly love to check it out
20:14 I see what you did there👌
🖤
Amazing video thanks a lot !! I'm really curious about how to play with the master knob. It seems like people tend to raise it much more than lower it and it sounded really good like you did.
I just don’t like over saturated tones, thanks!
thanks for the tip about the master knob my guy. helped really clean up my tone 😊
Cool video keyan i would like to see how you are programming drums thanks!!!
Soon!
"Turn that gain down" just leave it on 80%
do you one better, just leave it at like mmmm 99% and you’ll be good ;) xD
I haven’t tried THU, but I think Plini is turning into my favourite
Excellent demonstration for how to really do it properly.
Thank you Keyan! I learned so much.
Realized I was not subbed... Apologies brother. Love what you share and how you do it.
Thanks dude! Also love what you do
Wholesome content man. Thank you.
Thanks for this video. I've been struggling with a disgusting muddy ass tone and I can see now it's because I made many mistakes which you helped clarify. Thanks!
amazing tone man, thanks for sharing, greetings from mexico lml
No worries dude!
Liked before I watched time to watch! Lol
You’re quick!
Hey man just finished up the video really good stuff! I’ve never fully understood how to dial in tones like that but definitely will be using this as a good tool! Thanks for the great Content! :)
Man when you turned the high/presence up the tone got so much harsher. In a good way. I thought, bingo - that's what I'm looking for!
Great video! I try to use a similar process with my Helix, the hardest part is getting the right levels of gain. Can never tell if Ive dialed too much or too little, and I do use the palm mute blooms to try and gauge it. I sure end up spending too much of my playing time tweaking instead of practicing haha.
All in due time my friend
@@MrSomebody115 yes, it sounds so good that I don't even have an amp, I'm saving for a good V30 cab though
What's your tonal approach to double tracking hard paned guitars?
I have that same guitar but the dark blue/black. I love it as well i have the Single Cut to. They play wonderful.
I regret buying this before trying it haha. It’s crazy hard for me to dial in as opposed to their other plugins so thank you for this video
You had a like from me with just the intro guitar tone and chords.. Keep it coming
Thanks for sharing your process, good vid!
I wonder what this tone is like in standard tuning
You can always try free trial from Neural site. :)
Yesssss!! Bro I fucing needed this
Glad you used it!
I concur, it’s sounds pretty, pretty good!
I use Plini but load a Marshall 1690 Impulse response, the sound are so killer
i have the same Steinberg Audio Interface and mine is clipping/working the same as yours, without a DI box. interesting.
All guitar outputs different volumes
This is master class for me. I suck at dialing in guitar tone, and then wonder why my recordings sound like... well... a bit crap.
Are you using the DI box with your guitar? If yes, then why because I'm pretty sure your interface has switchable Hi-Z inputs?
The HiZ input on my interface doesn’t have enough headroom for my guitar, it clips when the gain is set all the way to 0
But does reducing volume knob can help if DI is not available? It does seem to reduce gain in my case before the interface but also I feel tone is changed too under the fingers.
Love your videos man! You’ve helped me so much with the guitar!
Glad you find them informative dude!
