We got scammed...

  • We got scammed by a local used car dealership. After contacting them and notifying them, they were not willing to help us at all. 1 month later, they went out of business.
Thankfully our friends at straight six dismantlers, www.bmwforpart..., had a lower mileage S55 engine and the team swapped it in! Our winner Jagger Bains came out and picked up the car and it's driving flawlessly!
Do you guys want to see us tear down the S55 to see what was wrong with it? If so, LIKE this video and comment below!

Run a smoke test on that engine. I had a similar problem with an N54 engine. Misfire on cylinder 6. Customer had done plugs and coils. Came to me to do the injectors. Would delete codes and the car ran fine for 3 days before misfire cylinder 6 set again. I was so stumped at this point. Thinking maybe it was a corrupted ECM. I dont know why, but I decided to run a smoke test and found an air leak on one of the intercooler couplers. They have an oring on them. Swapped it out, cleared the codes, and voila. No more misfire. I was stumped after though as to why it hadn't set a code for the air loss but thats BMW for you 😅

"Single cylinder misfire is usually caused by 1 of 3 things: bad spark plug, bad ignition coil, or bad fuel injector."
      They didn't bother to:
      * Verify the injector was getting a correct voltage or pulse width.
      * Pull the valve cover and inspect the valvetrain.
      * Do a leak down test.
      * Made a bunch of terrible assumptions, and started throwing parts at it.
      * And then decided to swap the engine. Cause they couldn't figure it out (and claim they ran out of time).
      * Check for intake tract air leaks. I'm not even BMW certified and I know that this particular BMW engine can throw a random cylinder 6 misfire if there is a leak in the intake tract.
Yeah Certs mean absolutely nothing here, and critical thinking failed. Seeing all the nut huggers in the comments, explains why the auto world is going to utter shit if "techs" like this are being praised, let alone being acceptable in the field.

If you get Engine Malfunction Light or Limp Mode on BMW’s with Push-to-Start
(at any speed) you can put the car in neutral & slightly apply the brake, you can push the Start/Stop button 3x in a row, the engine will turn off while driving, it will be in accessory mode. If you then depress the brake pedal & push the Start button the engine restarts as usual & you can engage gear again.
It will clear your limp mode & faults on the fly. No need to pull over to a stop every time.
    Works for A/T & M/T

If I was a betting man I bet the spring for the main oil valley thing is either broken or stretched and therefore it’s taking the oil pressure longer to catch up to itself and it’s probably losing that compression speed needed at that particular RPM. I’d take it apart and start checking all the oil valleys within the heads. Maybe pull the covers and watch for those valleys to fill up but that prolly won’t show much if you don’t see something right away. Hope this helps.

Run a smoke test , vacuum leaks also cause misfires. I would have said check for carbon buildup on the valves but I know Quinn would have checked for that. Direct injection engines are plagued with carbon buildup on the valves since fuel isn't splashed on the valves like in older engines, which cleans them up.

I would also flow test that injector and if that one injector either is clogged or had a seal issue then under heavy load like your doing would case a lean cylinder and a misfire especially if it’s a very small leak and only arises when under heavy load.

Sadly, dealerships are not reliable. I worked at the dealership as a maintenance and saw 1srlt hand on how customers' cars were mistreated. Not all of them but some did, and sadly, the customer was the one who had to pay the price. I myself had an unfortunate incident with another dealer, who replaced all the cooling parts in my car, but for some dumb reason, they didn't flash old coolent fully and mixed it with the new coolent. Thus causing reaction and clugging the cooling ports. That day, my wife drove the car and didn't realize that enjine was overheating and ending up blowing the motor. Dealer absolutely refused any responsibility and said that they would have no part of it and that it's our fault that enjine is blown. I never take any of my cars to a dealer ever again.

Same Stuttering thing happened on my VW, after a while my Turbo blew and it somehow affected the valves, i was told to either get a new engine or complete rebuild. Safe to say i am broke my car is now standing can’t afford to fix it and now without transport😅

I know there's a lot the cameras don't show but I'm incredibly impressed with Quinns attitude dealing with this. I know there are plenty of mechanics out there that would bitch and moan through this entire engine swap.

Might be a long shot but I have a Volvo S60R that was acting similar and it ended up being the pedal sensor. Every time I would punch it going 50-60mph it would bog and act really laggy, while also going into limp mode..Anyways, hope this helps, love the vids as always🤙🏻

sounds like LSPI (low speed pre ignition) common on ford ecoboosts as well. pretty much any direct injection engine will have this issue. its a oil issue likely needs a catch can and to clean the upper cylinder and intake ports. (which are also likly to be gummed up with carbon). i would try that before putting in a new engine..

Dude this is amazing!! I’d love to see you tackle BMW’s infamous early 2000s 6 series. I’ve got a 650i convertible with the first gen 4.8, would love to see what you’d do to it!

Figure out the issue on the original motor then add bigger turbos & put it in something else. Something it hasn’t been swapped into before!

I would imagine it has to be an issue with the hpfp not feeding the proper amount of fuel when you “gun” it at a certain rpm? Causing one of your cylinders to shut down or a fuel pressure sensor that’s going bad or fcm that’s also faulty?? Definitely not the cheapest thing to shotgun a bunch of things at it but sometimes you hit the right thing and at least you get all new parts 😅

I had pretty much the same misfire and it was spark plugs and/or coils. Replaced all 6 and never had it again

I had this same issue in 2016 Ghibli, whole car would shake if I accelerated at 130km/h if I was cruising at that point for a long time. Sparkplugs and coil packs fixed the issue oddly enough.

I'd like to imagine that since I have been driving BMW's for years now and I have a 2006 E46 M3 and a 2008 335XI N54 Modded to the gills (Around 730HP) that if I won I'd immediately turn off the traction control and burn a few donies right then and there in the lot! LOL. But I probably wouldn't because the character my father, my family and MY GOD has instilled in me would prevail and I'd just have to be respectful and not a total self indulgent tool! LOL! AWESOME CAR! AWESOME VIDEO! Thank you!
