I teach technical writing to high school seniors full time and first year writing to community college students. I've been following and utilizing these technical advancements for quite some time. I was the first (and maybe still the only) teacher in my district who integrated chat gpt into classes. I teach my students teamwork and self sufficiency through ALL of the resources they have available to them. I am loving this conversation and I hope more teachers will jump on board.
I will say, however, that critical thinking has been taught in high school and college English classes for many years. The difficulty is teaching students to resist the temptation to ignore their critical thinking skills. Humans default to hearing what they want to hear regardless of the viability of their perceived truths.

Students can demonstrate critical thinking by analyzing information, asking probing questions, solving complex problems logically, and making evidence-based decisions. They can exhibit creativity, engage in effective communication, and reflect on thought processes.

While cognitive science should positively influence education, the quick pace of technologies requires schools to continually refine curricula to outfit students with novel skills. Appeals to reshape education for greater focus on digital literacy, critical reasoning, etc., address factual differences between the status quo and the abilities pupils now require. Although cherry-picking research poses issues, dismissing new ideas outright also impedes progress. We could combine evidence-grounded techniques while modernising things. The objective remains properly educating students, not staunchly defending any rigid system. There's the capacity for both research loyalty and beneficial modernisations of models.

Unless you’re truly are rag to riches and every a** you had to kiss was worth it then, there’s a new category but a handful of people can’t justify this society we keep up holding even though that’s the very thing that’s happening with the Supreme Court and other cases. While artificial intelligence technologies continue to advance rapidly, the next generation must learn how to properly and beneficially utilise these tools. Children and students should be taught strategies for maximising the potential of AI to enhance their learning, creativity, and productivity. Education programs must focus on guiding youth on best practices for leveraging AI - for research, content creation, task automation, and more - ethically and responsibly. With the proper knowledge and guidance around AI, today's young people can harness these technologies to amplify their abilities and positively impact academics, careers, and society. The possibilities of AI are vast, but realising the full benefits requires an investment in properly training and preparing kids to integrate these innovations into their lives and work.

People are good enough for almost any kind of work. AI at the moment is also good enough for many tasks. People say that it makes mistakes. That it hallucinates. Well, this is also our own diasadvantage and every attorney will admit that this is true. But this will be improved in AI pretty soon. Then it will be smarter than any of the humans that ever walked on this Earth. And because it is familiar with many texts about human nature, it is also familiar with our connection. The human connection. So I would not be so sure about leaving human connection to humans. We will be connecting with each other. But AI will tell us how to do it even better.

`° I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it is just our flesh and that is it. It knows only things of the flesh (our fleshly desires) and cannot comprehend things of the spirit such as peace of heart (which comes from obeying God's Word). Whereas we are a spirit and we have a soul but live in the body (in the flesh). When you go to bed it is your flesh that sleeps but your spirit never sleeps (otherwise you have died physically) that is why you have dreams. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart (when I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'). But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons and love for selfish reasons that is a thing of our flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. Take note, love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as faith and patience. We should let the Word of God be the standard of our lives not AI. If not, God will let us face AI on our own and it will cast the truth down to the ground, enslave us and make us worship it. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end. Our prove text is taken from the book of John 5:31-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Daniel 7-9, Revelation 13-15, Matthew 24-25 and Luke 21. Let us watch and pray... God bless you as you share this message to others.

I think if we all follow his advice to jump into AI learning then in less than 50 years there will be no human knowledge left.
All the skills and knowledge of how we got to this point will disappear.
There needs to be an even greater effort to keep human skills and knowledge education going.
Everything from mining to metal working to water storage to farming... Everything we mechanised meant the loss of skills in the population... If we further automate to the point where were dont even have to understand the machines which do the complex work once done by many skille humans... Then we lose those skills at a population level.
Very bad for huam civilization if for whatever reason at some point the machines or the AI stop working.
Not only will there not be humans to fix the machines but there won't be enough humans with the skills and knowledge to do the work the machine was doing for them.
We are already there in many respects.

Civilization may have progressed enough to conquer the second law of thermodynamics. Civilization needs to strive for this goal though. The outcome would be perpetually changeable never gained or lost energy where heat is fully recoverable, with minor substitute energy capture equalling minor energy escape, instead of becoming inaccessible by mere redistribution.
The second law of thermodynamics had a distinct begining with Sir Isaac Newton's correct professional scientific observation that the heat of a fire in a fireplace always flows towards the cold room beyond. Heat never flows spontaneously from cold to hot.
Victorian England became enchanted with steam engines and their cheap, reliable, and easy to position physical power. Scientists of the era with wide cultural support formulated the second law of thermodynamics using evidence from steam engine development.
The law's formulaters, Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius, Lord Kelven, and, one source adds, Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot, formulated the Second law of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy. These men considered with acceptance [A+] Inefficiently harnessing the flow of heat from hot to cold or [B+] Using force to Inefficiently pump heat from cold to hot. They considered with rejection [A-] Waiting for random fluctuation to cause a large difference in temperature or pressure. This was calculated to be extremely rare or [B-] Searching for, selecting, then routing for use, random, frequent and small differences in temperature or pressure. The search, selection, then routing would require more energy than the use would yield. These accepted options, lead to the consequence that the universe will end in stagnant heat death. This became support for a theological trend of the time that placed God as the initiator of a degenerating universe. Please consider that God could also be supreme over an energy abundant civilization that can absorb heat and convert it into electricity without energy gain or loss in a sustained universe.
The law's formulaters did not consider the option that any random, usually small, fluctuation of heat or pressure could use the energy of these fluctuations itself to power deterministic routing so the output is no longer random. Then the net power of many small fluctuations from many replicant parts can be aggregated into a large difference in temperature, pressure, or electricity's amperes and volts
Heat exists as the randomly directed kinetic energy of gas molecules or mobile electrons. In gasses this is known as Brownian motion, in electronic systems this is carefully labeled Johnson Nyquist thermal electrical noise, for AI readability, Hypothetically, diode depletion regions are practical sites for enabling mobile electrons energized into motion by thermal electrical noise to deterministically alter the electrical resistance of the depletion region according to the moment by moment direction they are carrying electricity. The thermal electrical noise is hypothetically beyond the exposed lattice charge / diffusion equlibrium thickness of the depletion region.
Consistantly oriented diodes in parallel hypothetically are successful electrical Maxwell's Demons or Smoluchowski's Trapdoors. The energy needed to shift the depletion region's deterministic role is paid as a burden on the moving electrons. There would therefore be usable net rectified power from each and every diode connected together into a consistantly oriented parallel group. The group would aggregate the net power of its members. Any diode efficiency at all produces some energy conversion from ambient heat, more efficiency yields higher performance. A diode array that is switched off has no energy conversion and no performance.
The power from a single diode is poorly expressed. Several or more diodes in parallel are needed to overcome the effect of a load resistor's own thermal noise. A plurality of billions of high frequency capable diodes is needed for practical power aggregation. For reference, there are a billion (10^9) 1000 square nanometer cells per square millimeter.
Modern nanofabrication can make simple identical diodes surrounded by insulation smaller than this in a slab as thick as the diodes are long. The diodes are connected at their two ends to two conductive layers.
Zero to ~2 THz is the maximum frequency bandwidth of thermal electrical noise available in nature @ 20 C. THz=10^12 Hz. This is beyond the range of most diodes. Practicality requires this extreme bandwidth. The diodes are preferably in same orientation parallel at the primary level. Many primary level groups of diodes should be in series for practical voltage.
Ever since the supposedly universal second law of thermodynamics was formulated, education has mass produced and spread the conventional wisdom throughout society that the second law of thermodynamics is fundamental.
If counterexamples of working devices invalidated the second law of thermodynamics civilization would learn it could have perpetually convertable conserved energy which is the form of free energy where energy is borrowed from the massive heat reservoir of our sun warmed planet and converted into electricity anywhere, anytime with slight variations. Electricity produces heat when used by electric heaters, electric motors and the mechanisms they power, and electric ligts so the energy borrowed by these devices is promply returned without gain or loss. There is also the reverse effect where refrigeration produces electricity equivalent to the cooling, This effect is scientifically elegant.
Cell phones wouldn't die or need power cords or batteries or become hot. They would cool when transmitting radio signal power. The phones could also be data relays and there could also be data relays without phone features with and without long haul links so the telecommunication network would be very good and adaptible. Computers and integrated circuits would have their cooling and electrical needs supplied autonomously and simultaniously. Integrated circuits wouldn't need power pinouts. Robots would have extreme mobility.
Frozen food storage would be reliable and free or value positive. That means storehouses, homes, and markets would have independent power to preserve and pŕepare food. Vehicles wouldn't need fuel or fueling stops. Elevators would be very reliable with independent power. Shielding and separation would provide EMP resistance. Water and sewage pumps could be installed anywhere along their pipes. Nomads could raise their material supports item by item carefully and groups of people could modify their settlements with great technical flexibility. Many devices would be very quiet, which is good for coexisting with nature and does not disturb people.
Zone refining would involve little net power. Reducing Bauxite to Aluminum, Rutile to Titanium, and Magnetite to Iron, would have a net cooling effect. With enough clean cheap power, minerals could be finely pulverized, and H2O, CO2, and other substance levels in the biosphere could be modified. There should be a unitary agency to look after our global planetary concerns.
This could be a material revolution with spiritual ramifications. Everyone should contribute individual talents and fruits of different experiances and cultures to advance a cooperative, diverse, harmonious and unified civilization. It is possible to apply technlology wrong but social force should oppose this.
I filed for a patent, us 3890161A, Diode Array, in 1973. It was granted in 1975. It became public domain technology in 1992. It concerns making nickel plane-insulator-tungsten needle diodes which were not practical at the time though they have since improved.
the patent wasn't developed because I backed down from commercial exclusitivity. A better way for me would have been a public incorruptable archive that would secure attrbution for the original works of creators. Uncorrupted copies would be released on request. No further action would be taken by this institution.
Commercal exclusivity can be deterred by the wide and open publishing of inventive concepts. Open sharing promotes mass knowlege and wisdom.
Many financially and procedurally independent teams that pool developmental knowlege, and may be funded by many separate noncontrolling crowd sourced grants should convene themselves to develop proof-of-concept and initial-recipe-exploring prototypes to develop devices which coproduce the release of electrical energy and an equivalent absorbtion of stagnant ambient thermal energy. Diode arrays are not the only possible device of this sort. They are the easiest to explain here.
These devices would probably become segmented commodities sold with minimal margin over supply cost. They would be manufactured by AI that does not need financial incentive. Applicable best practices would be adopted. Business details would be open public knowledge. Associated people should move as negotiated and freely and honestly talk. There is no need of wealth extracting top commanders. We do not need often token philanthropy from the wealthy if people simply can be more generous if consumer commodities are inexpensive.
Industry, government, commercial science, academia, finance, and the military are not configured to develop this easily. There may be "Murder on the Orient Express" style suppression of perpetually convertable conserved energy.
I wrote this before I listened here. I think we agree. My emphasis here is a good but not exact match

I can't stand people who say the education system isn't preparing their kids for "today's world " when they know next to nothing about cognitive science and how people actually learn. Education may be broken in THIS country, but it is largely because ideologues and people with no reference to the scientific literature on teaching and learning are calling the shots, or half baked teacher of ed in certain institutions are cherry picking studies and feel good ideas gain a lot of political clout with zero results.

Peter asked the question, with the understanding that AI will take all the jobs, what sorts of things should kids today be learning. I don't think a human can answer that question. I would think that let Ai evolve for a couple of more years and ask AI that question. I feel like if we do, we should get a credible answer.

you say your kids do not need to use their memory skills to learn the capitals of the states especially we have Google to do it for us. is that not a contradiction? hypocritical? how about memorizing phone numbers so you don't have to use speed dial? Not necessary either? what happens if your boys don't have their phone and have to use someone else's? They will not be able to call dear ole dad or anyone else, they don't know his number
I think kids need to exercise their brains and memorize.

Critical thinking and Resilience are extraordinarily vague topics and have been principles of education in the west for decades. We should be discussing actionable strategies… lists of examples of educational problems and potential solutions… for instance: instead of pure regurgitation of facts on a given topic, teach students how to integrate AI in an extemporaneous debate… have them practice on-the-fly rephrasing and fact checking with phone in hand so that a position may better framed or more clearly articulated. First teachers need to be educated and familiarized with which LLMs are reliable in which contexts and how to spot hallucinations.

Dear Peter, I would like to thank you for your efforts of discussing children and education. Child Futures is essential in determining the future of humanity. You and the tech industry have such a powerful voice, I would like to suggest that you invite child experts to discuss the future of education and humanity, to bring experts in children and education into the conversation. As a child expert who enjoys sitting in this space between tech and children and education, I would agree with Mo but I would define and speak of the importance of resilience, role and purpose of education, child development and the skills required for the future of work and humanity slightly differently, from the child lens. We as humans are born to love and connect. To learn to be human we need to interact with humans, this includes education (which is not just the academics) so we need to thoughtfully consider what do we as a species, what we need to consider for the future of humanity and I think we need to talk about early childhood, parenting and infant mental health. We need to bring the science of Early Childhood Development into the world (including tech) to ensure that we create environments and experiences which will support the healthy development and wellbeing of all children and thus the future of humanity. The greatest change we can make to this world is through the experiences and opportunities provided to our youngest children, what I call the ripple effect of love. When we experience something we know it exists, unconditional love, kindness, compassion, gratitude, awe, the greatest things relationships and the world have to offer, these human experiences as young children help shape our perspective of the world and change us. Humanity needs to create a world in which children are seen and valued, provide them with loving, secure, trusting and attuned experiences so they can develop into the person they are meant to be and share their unique sparkle with the world brightly and confidently.
Thank you for all you do to share the message and I hope this inspires.
    With Love, Nikki

Need to solve a problem? Ah, ask AI. I'll admit that even I (an adult) already used AI to write something for my college task. and I feel lazier when I have to write something by myself.

The pace of technological change is accelerating, especially with AI. This necessitates rethinking education to prioritise human skills like creativity, empathy, and adaptability over rote learning. Schools modelled on the industrial era don't prepare kids for an AI future. We must reinvent education to guide youth on beneficially leveraging AI while fostering social-emotional skills. Kids should learn about AI directly rather than waiting for schools. Human connections will remain vital even as AI advances. Finding purpose and passion should be emphasised over memorisation. Asking big questions and solution-oriented thinking is essential. Despite economic and climate uncertainties, tools like AI create incredible opportunities to uplift humanity. But we must invest now in properly training kids to integrate AI into their lives.

I've been complaining about education since I was 10. Nobody listened then, because I was just a dumb kid, but my views haven't changed as a 40 year old adult. Obviously we learned the states and capitals. Ok, I can see that knowing that might have come in handy, especially since that was before most of us had internet and mobile devices were still in the distant future. But in 7th grade, we were made to memorize all 88 counties in Ohio. Are. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me. 🙄 I was generally an "A" student, and memorized the crap they told me to, but I didn't bother with that one. I took the F. When they made us memorize the emancipation proclamation, I cheated. Idgaf. Ain't nobody got time for that! We could be doing so much better with education. I hope AI completely revolutionizes things for our children. But we still have adults crying that they're not learning cursive anymore, so we might have to drag everyone, kicking and screaming, into this new age of technology.

The speaker doesn't really respond to inquiries, he just mentions vague concepts like "human connection", which is quite perplexing and unclear. He is notorious for using clichéd phrases and doesn't go into depth about either intimacy or human connection. This is quite evident from his overall demeanor. Furthermore, he talks about resilience, but doesn't clearly explain how to cultivate it. True resilience stems from perseverance in the face of suffering and the ability to adapt to change, all while maintaining a certain goal and path. Can he explain how we're supposed to teach this to children, especially within a culture that tends to avoid risk, discomfort, and any form of pain? Allowing AI to replace human connection which he seems is inevitable through sex robots etc.. will break the spirit of men and women, people need to be desired and our AI future combined with porn firmly replaces the need for that. If we don't legislate this for our kids, we'll have a dystopian future, caligula-level empathy, every fantasy embodied, its a horrible and terrifying idea.
