Summary: On the death of his brother King Edward IV, Richard of Gloucester conspires to get the throne for himself. The late King had two young sons, his heir, Edward V and the younger Prince Richard, but they are not of age and so names his other brother, Clarence as Lord Protector of the Realm. Gloucester soon kills his younger brother but is haunted by his ghost and what he has done. As he continues to kill those around him, Gloucester is haunted by those he has betrayed hearing voices and slowly descending into madness. He spreads rumors that the late King's two sons are illegitimate and therefore not eligible to ascend to the throne. He assassinates the young princes and is crowned King Richard III. The ghosts from his past have the final say however.

Saw this for the first time as a kid and liked it well enough. It wasn't boring. Those were the days when we only watched monster/horror films or crime caper movies. But we also watched Abbott and Costello and the Bowery Boys. Sometimes we tuned into surf movies or rock and roll films. There were some good Westerns too. I think we watched a lot of movies back then.

I bet the costumes for this would have been beautiful in color but the black and white gives it a moody gothic feel imo.
I love Vincent Price so I have to say Theater of Blood as a favorite Shakespearean film. (he's at his campy best in it)
And 1935's A Midsummer Night's Dream, I've always thought it to be visually stunning.

Favorite Shakespeare on film, Twelfth Night with Helena Bonham Carter. I was probably at the height of my crush on her when that came out, and loved the movie.
For ones that stray from the original, Scotland,PA was fun. Macbeth moved to a restaurant setting in rural Pennsylvania. It was an interesting take.

I'm a huge fan of Shakespeare adaptations, from the Ian McKellen Richard III set in WWi to She's the Man. But my favorite production is still Kenneth Brannaugh's Much Ado About Nothing, in spite of those that unfortunate casting decision (Keanu Reeves) and the disastrous casting decision (Michael Keaton).

The American Players Theater in Spring Green Wisconsin put on the best version of Midsummer’s Night Dream I’ve ever seen. And last season’s Sense and Sensibility was no slouch either, of course, that is not Shakespeare. But there are plenty of other playwrights. We are going to see Anton’s Shorts tomorrow. Three short plays by Anton Chekov , who invented the gun.

I knew of the 1939 version with Price and Basil Rathbone but I hadn't heard of this one, will have to catch it. Wonder if Price had any aspirations towards playing Shakespeare himself -- Theater of Blood almost plays like a kind of wanna-be Shakespeare movie, with Price sending up the whole notion of Shakespearean acting. My own favorite Shakespeare on film is Olivier's Richard III from 1955, which he also plays as a bit of a sendup of the Shakespeare villain.

Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet with Mel Gibson is a fave, but its Helena Bonham Carter who steals the show with her portrayal of Ophelia.
