The Donner people are awesome and I like the look of this. I have a Donner acoustic a little not staying in tune at first, but it has settled in fine and I love playing it.
Haven't played a Donner guitar, but that looks like a sweet entry-level guitar. Love the finish. I don't mind the cheaper electronics, so long as it works. Thanks for this look at it!
A lot of the inexpensive guitars really look good. This one is really really pretty and sounded fine. I ordered the Monoprice one as a test and it was a beautiful blue burst. It played decent and sounded ok. For a modder or first timer these guitars, Donner, and the like are perfect. With my curiosity in check I sold it for what I bought it for and was happy enough.
I like what you did with the camera during the mellow tones! Don't quote me on this, but I think the plastic cap under the neck plate is to keep the metal plate from digging into the body. Who knows about these things?
In the UK it doesn't seem to be available in the red. Only thing I could find was a Donner starter pack with a burst finish (model DST-1) strao, gig bag mini amp etc. For £110. If it's the same guitar in a different finish I suppose it's not a bad deal for a beginner.
Ok, just bought one of these for $60. Mint condition. Guitar is beautiful, gig bag is nice. Issues: 1. middle pickup not working. (Not a real problem for me as I had already planned to upgrade with alnicos). 2. Sharp fret ends. Not the worst I've felt, but still pretty bad. Took care of those with a file. 3. Trem cavity not routed properly. Trem block is wedged against the wood. I'll have to use my Dremel on this. My advice: caveat emptor. The bones of this guitar are good, but it's a fixer-upper. Needs a fair amount of work. I would only recommend this to someone who knows how to work on guitars.
I would like to see you buy another one of these and upgrade one of them and then do a comparison between the two, just to see what the real differences are.
Hey Landon, thanks for the reviews! Based upon the information you have provided, I decided to buy one! They had the Sapphire Blue in stock and I should get it the first week of 2021. Thanks again Brother keep up the GREAT work! Your fellow Canuck... Al
My Saphire Blue Donner came with sharp feet and ( kinda expected), but once I filed them down, it became a really nice guitar. Thanks again to Landon for the review. I'm very happy with it!
If it's playable, every guitar can be tweaked for the player. Most folks are play at home types. Those on a budget can buy a T, S, LP and 335 type for under $1K. A used practice amp is $50 or less. It's a great time to get into electric guitar and watch these funny and info packed videos.
As far as electronics go, it seems like you can always get the best quality stuff and it really doesn't cost that much. A full on custom pre-wired setup is less than $100. To me just the feel of good quality pots/switches is definitely worth it.
Was looking for a video comparison between Squier Affinity/Bullet and this Donner. The only guy on the internet that has the answer. 22:35. Definitely helped me decide. Thanks.
That really is a beautiful finish Landon and a very nice modding prospect too. The existing pickups and electrics would definitely have to go. Not to mention the hardware too but it would be an interesting project. Cheers 😀👍
Those frets actually look nicely finished.didn't see alot of tool marks etc. Sounds thin, just like an affinity though.but definitely a decent mod platform.I've stopped buying more expensive guitars in favor of these budget axes.i usually instantly put on locking tuners, tusq nut and string trees.then drop the action.immediatly they become nice playable guitars.my newest is an IYV semi-hollow body tele(IT 400 i believe ,$130 u.s.)after the aforementioned upgrades.its become one of my favorite guitars and the pickups are great.pick it up more than most my others lately.budget guitars have become quite nice.what a time to be a guitar player and it will be even more sweet once all these pandemic players dont pan out.then start selling used guitars for great deals.
Hey Landon, loving the videos. Great your trying out the cheaper models for beginners. I have tried a few just out of intrigue and been really surprised. The one I was most impressed with was the Amber Rockson LP style from musicstore which cost me £88. The quality was amazing. No sharp frets or anything. Even had a one veneer on the back to make it look good. Sound was great for a cheap guitar. If you can get one to review on here you should.
@@landonbailey Hi there :) Absolutely fantastic review of this Donner DST-100R. Extremely comprehensive, informative, useful stuff here :) Your presentation on this guitar is hands down the best one I've seen :)
@@landonbailey Hello there once again 😀 Say just outta curiosity, I was kindly wondering if you were in the market for this particular style guitar, and had a choice between this Donner or the Squier Affinity HSS model, which one would you end up going for?
You know, you can get an app that measures gauss - along with the DC resistance, that can tell you if the pickup is similar to a fender. I have found most vintage single coils to be around 8-9 gauss.
22:08 you mention the Monoprice classic, and I’ve seen your videos on that one, as well as your upgrading video. Did you ever do a comparison video on the Donner DST-100R versus The Indio Monoprice Cali Classic Electric Guitar? I’m considering purchasing my 2nd ‘1st Guitar’. (my 1st guitar (acoustic) being one my mother got for me from a garage sale so I could take beginner guitar in 7th grade.) I’m trying to decide between the Donner, and Monoprice. I know one is a SSS, and the other being a HSS. I haven’t played since 7th grade, and I’m 54 now.
@@davidkastin4240 I had the Donner for a short period of time. 6 screws, 3/8” apart from each other in the bridge, in basswood, apparently caused a split in the body at the left corner of the routered opening. I sent it back.
I got this same guitar August 10th It is my first guitar and I really like it. The only issue is the tuning peg on the low E string and the A string slip which really make it hard to tune. I will need to replace them but otherwise I really like it.
Love your videos . You always make me laugh! "Get your mind out of the gutter"! You asked about cheap electronics: Reliability can be an issue. Cheap pots have varying tolerances, so a 250k might actually be a lot more or less which can make the pickups sound brighter or muddier, and would explain why reviews of the same guitar can vary so much. Pickup don't have to sound exactly like Fender (in this case) to be good, but people might expect them to sound like the Fender-type sounds in their head. If you're expecting a classic warm alnico 3 sound, you won't get it from a ceramic magnet. To me, better pickups, particularly hand wound ones, have more complexity and richer overtones. When you turn down, the notes still have definition and they can handle overdrive better. That's what I have found anyway.
The way I see it with cheap guitars is if you buy it and you like it, keep it, upgrade it, if you don't get rid of it and get something else. They do make good playing cheap guitars and sometimes expensive guitars play bad too.

The general price/quality ratio re music gear has made leaps and bounds in progress, like I never thought I'd see or something. Growing up during the 70s, gear was gaspingly expensive, and despite the romanticism of people who got defecated from the womb 6 months ago already strangely imbued with miraculous levels of musical talent which would make Beethoven commit suicide in despair (another beyond-strange development, which can only be explained by, like, aliens), the average piece of music gear sucked. The shining examples which people now who couldn't name a single Beatle without going to Wiki from the 50s-70s they worship were exceptions. To me, it's absolutely surreal that I can grab the lousiest-looking Squier in a music store, and it will be perfectly decent. That NEVER used to happen. ...I'm 60, lol.
Hey Landon, a couple of questions on this. Did you mention somewhere in your video that the affinity can’t be upgraded with fender parts ie: loaded pickguard? Have you looked at the Xavier guitars from guitarfetish.com?
Hey there, I enjoy your videos. I'm just getting into to guitar at the age of 37 so I'm not looking to invest a lot of money in what my be a fleeting infatuation. Any chance you have your hands on a Sawtooth brand guitar as this Donner and the Sawtooth (mainly because they have more paint options at this price point) seem to be where I'm focusing in on. Info on the entry level Sawtooth seem to be hard to come by outside of a video by GuitarMax and he didn't tear it down or go through the specs. If you have already reviewed that guitar and I've simply missed, please link me to the video, if not, consider this a request :) Keep up the great work.
That just doesn't make one lick of sense whatsoever to me, I don't get it. What exactly is the point in attempting to acquire Fender guitar parts to put them into or on to a cheap ass guitar body, I mean what do people get out of this? To each their own certainly, but IMO it's the same as getting a bunch of Cadillac parts and slapping them on a Datsun/Nissan. One could do that all day long, but when all is said and done, it's not gonna be a Caddy, it's still a Datsun/Nissan. I guess my point is if I wanted a Fender, I'd get one. If I wanted a Gibson, I'd get a Gibson, because no matter how hard ya try, ya can't polish a turd.
If that's what "cheap" electronics sound like...then I'm a "cheap" electronics fanboy! It sounds livelier than most Strats and brighter in a very good way, ironically too.
Realistically, electronics have to do one thing--carry electricity to the right circuits at the right times. If they do that successfully and hold up under repeated cycles and mechanical movements with proper use, then you got a great piece of electronics. That said, I've yet to head anyone say, "I've used some potentiometers in my time and I gotta tell ya...THESE...are the greatest potentiometers ever made. The other ones I had exploded in my guitar and made the guitar go out of tune and stuff."
Great video ! Played a few Teles yesterday from Player , CV and G and L . I’ve played these in Strat form a while back too and it’s a mixed bag but with both I found the G and L pickups best in both Strat and Teles . Not a fan of satin necks but on the CV they are super sticky gloss ! The Donner looks like a great starter guitar or if you were a Tele guy but fancied a Strat you probably couldn’t go wrong with this and the humbucker sounds good -maybe a single coil would be too high -pitched unless you can roll off the tone .
signal comes out of the guitar thas why its called output...but maybe plugin-jack or something might do the work. and pickguard screw hole positions arent the same.
Loved the campfire tones! Dylantalkstone pretty much summed it up on electronics: unless something isn't working, leave it be, it's fine. If you are going to change things, perhaps it is ok to spend a few more $ to replace them too.
Landon, there are many different trees whose lumber is called "Rosewood", there are slight differences between them, hence why some wood called rosewood may look different to some existing rosewood fretboards you may have. www.britannica.com/plant/rosewood-tree-and-timber
@@jicklesjingles8134 Why on earth would you wanna try and put a Fender neck, or any other parts for that matter, into or onto a cheap ass guitar body? Doesn't make a lick of sense. You can take Cadillac parts, slap them onto a Datsun/Nissan, but that's not gonna make it a Caddy, it's still a cheap ass Datsun at the end of the day. It's like trying to polish a turd.
How much more is the Donner DST-100R Full-Size 39" electric guitar with bag strap cable than the Donner DST-100R Full-Size 39" electric guitar with bag strap? Do they also do a Donner DST-100R Full-Size 39" electric guitar with bag model? Or even a Donner DST-100R Full-Size 39" electric guitar? Man, they do need shorter model names.
Glarry/HarleyBenton do them even a few bucks cheaper. It is staggering what level of instrument you can get if you combine "cheaper" cuts of wood, clone hardware, CNC machining and automation, and (ultimately the biggest factor) very low wage emerging economies. Then ship it half way round the world, and still make money.
I have no faith in manufacturer gifted guitar reviews. First the reviewer is accepting a gift and more importantly I believe that the gift guitar has been hand picked. I have some experience with these cheap guitars, mostly out of curiosity because of TH-cam reviews, and my experiences have not been good. I do not view these gift guitar reviews as being an accurate depiction because I don't believe that the guitars are randomly picked.
hey there! I can understand being skeptic of stuff like this. Did you watch my unboxing video: th-cam.com/video/1p8UFp3EAU4/w-d-xo.html They made no efforts to send me anything special. It was sent directly from Amazon, and wasn't even double boxed. I would be more skeptical of a TH-cam channel that doesn't say where they get their reviewed guitars from (free or purchased) :)
It is not a criticism of you personally Landon, it is a criticism of the premise of free guitars for reviews. I am sure that you are honest. I own twentysomething guitars probably closer to thirty. I would have to go through five rooms of my house to count them all, and YES my wife ISN'T happy about it. I have purchased a few cheap guitars that have received rave reiews from career TH-camrs and my experience has sometimes been totally opposite of the reviewer and not in a good way. Two in particular. It was if I was was sent B-stock guitars while paying for A-stock. It is just that I believe that many of these reviewed guitars are hand picked knowing that they will be reviewed on TH-cam.@@landonbailey
Hey I understood what you meant and that it wasn't for me personally. And I've thought the same thing. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just honestly don't think it happened in my case. take care!
Donner just sounds cheap, sorry I ain't no snob I play a Harley Benton Tele (upgraded) but just saying the name 'Donner' sounds like a mail order catalogue brand or some after Pub fast food, sorry but they need a better name on the headstock like 'Raptor' or something...

If you have already reviewed that guitar and I've simply missed, please link me to the video, if not, consider this a request :) Keep up the great work.
can't say I've heard of that brand
@@landonbailey Bummer, thank you for the speedy reply.
Thanks for the video Landon. What I want to know is, is there someone called Tennessee who designed this guitar or did the whole state design it? 9:29
Does anyone know what the neck pocket width is on the Donner strat? Is it the same size as a Fender strat neck pocket? Will a Fender neck fit?
If you are going to change things, perhaps it is ok to spend a few more $ to replace them too.
cool. My main reason to replace cheap electronics would be mainly tactile, and hopefully provide longer term reliability. but mainly the feeling
@@landonbailey That is a very valid reason.
Landon, there are many different trees whose lumber is called "Rosewood", there are slight differences between them, hence why some wood called rosewood may look different to some existing rosewood fretboards you may have.
www.britannica.com/plant/rosewood-tree-and-timber
good to know thanks!
I see your friend to the left!!!
The size of the pots are not as important as the K output.
Try telling that to Texas
I'm not the kind of guy that tries to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear but if I was a total beginner , this would be excellent .
Nice freebie
So... is the neck pocket fender size?
I’m not sure. I don’t know the size of a Fender pocket. Would have to look it up.
@@landonbailey Thanks in advance!
Hey, um I think their website crashed or something, this morning everything on it was for $0 now it just doesn't work so idk
I wish have a electric guitar
How many frets?
22
Thanks:)
"Music to fall asleep to", that's good as long as the player does not fall asleep.
39 Inch Nails, how so didn't you hear about them?:-7 PD: "Buffeáut" is that french?:-7
That guitar would look even better if they were to put a black Pick guard on it.
For sure is same product like harley benton st-20. Just other brand.
Really awesome giveaway reminds me of a Yamaha Pacifica would love to win would be great for moding
Donner in french is the verb 'to give'. Lol.
The answer to your first question is Santa Claus.
10:45 Can we expect a Baby Strat in nine months?
just friends 😄
@@landonbailey Oh, OK. Just heavy fretting, then.
WHAT KIND OF WOOD THEY ARE MADE,HE DONT TALK ABOUT IT.
What a time we live in. Soon you will be able to buy a decent guitar at the dollar store Hee Haw
I'd buy that for a dollar!
@@landonbailey 😂🤣😂🤣
I couldn't own of of those. It keeps reminding me of the Donner Party. Munch munch.
Campfire 🔥 Girls
Never ever ever ever be this way again
Looks like a harley benton headstock 😉
pretty sure it’s the same guitar
Donner guitars, so good you'll want to eat us up
i don't know how a company can build and sell an instrument for $100, just paying the labor would seem to make it less than cost effective.
Glarry/HarleyBenton do them even a few bucks cheaper. It is staggering what level of instrument you can get if you combine "cheaper" cuts of wood, clone hardware, CNC machining and automation, and (ultimately the biggest factor) very low wage emerging economies. Then ship it half way round the world, and still make money.
you look like Andrew Camarata with nicer hair
The guitar signal is weak so using small pots makes no difference.
Did you watch my unboxing video: th-cam.com/video/1p8UFp3EAU4/w-d-xo.html
They made no efforts to send me anything special.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just honestly don't think it happened in my case. take care!
Did I catch some silverchair?
very likely!
I call it the fanny jack, for obvious reasons .
