When the US Navy was told to reactivate the four IOWA Class BBs in 1981, they were caught totally by surprise and it became a frantic rush to dig up the old documentation on the ships needed to do the necessary overhauls and upgrades. One of the main set of information was the metallurgical specs of the various steels, many of them armor-grade (Bureau of Ships Special Treatment Steel (STS) or Bureau of Ordnance Class "B" armor) similar to US Army WWII Rolled Homogeneous Armor on tanks, but mostly somewhat softer due to the larger size and lower striking velocity of naval armor-piercing projectiles fired from long range compared to what a tank had to face), The thick face-hardened side armor (BuOrd Class "A" Armor, used for the waterline armor belts and the thick main turret and barbette armor, except for the turret faces made of the thickest armor on the ship as 17-19" Class "B" plates, made up of two plates, a thinner back plate laminated by heavy bolts to a very thick front plate) was only made for that organization, not BuShips. There was also other grades of steel extensively used, such as BuShips High Tensile Steel (HTS) for primary structural strength areas and the several spaced below-the-waterline anti-torpedo side bulkheads, as well as regular Medium Steel (MS) used for general construction purposes throughout most of the ship. While punching holes through the Class "A" armor was ill-advised and so not done, a large number of holes had to be made in several STS plates, especially large holes in the amidships 6" (4.5" laminated on top of 1.5") STS armored Second Deck (the deck one space below the weather deck at the top of the hull). Drilling clean holes through that thick deck armor was not a simple task and they needed to know exactly what it was made of and what its various properties were.
I, as a hobby, had been researching naval armor and armor-piercing projectiles in my study "Armor and Ordnance of the Age of Ironclads" (or "How to Punch Holes in Battleships"), I had been working on that for about 10 years prior to this time and continue working on it to this day, with considerable success. Back then, I had gotten a rather huge amount of documents from the National Archives, US Federal Government Document Repositories (such as the huge one in Washington, DC), and directly from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, Dahlgren, Virginia, which had been called the US Naval Proving Ground for armor and ordnance experiment and testing since 1917 through well after WWII hen its name went through several changes. Included in the documents that I had were a number that gave detailed reports on the making of US Navy armor-class armor steels just prior to and during WWII by various contractors (mostly Carnegie-Illinois, Bethlehem Steel, and the Midvale Company), I was contacted directly by Mr. Landgraff, the person in charge of the initial USS NEW JERSEY overhaul in San Pedro, California (since closed), the first-of-class overhaul development ship, and asked if I had anything they could use ASAP. I said I would look and within a few days I sent him about 3/4th of an inch thick of Xeroxed documents by mail, for which he said were exactly what he needed and thanked me. As a further thank you, he gave me not one, but two, guided tours of NEW JERSEY being overhauled. Indiana Jones has nothing on me!!!

Did BB-62 have the SPOOK-9 in the front conning tower?? I know she had it installed on the rear funnel but I can’t seem to find a picture of her with the typical round ball on the front part of the ship. They all had them late in their careers but BB-63 and BB-64 had two each of the AN/SPQ-9 round modules.

According to my knowledge, no, New Jersey was the only one of her sisters to not have one in the front conning tower. I do know the New Jersey's forward conning tower is rather unique looking when compared to the rest of her sisters, as hers has a more flat and boxy appearance towards the top. This is due to the modifications made to her during the Vietnam War. Among the Iowa's, New Jersey really is one-of-a-kind in terms of her looks.

Didn't watch long enough, that's the Missouri. Why does she have 63 on No 1 turret and New Jersey I wonder?
The only things missing in this video are the Iowa and Wisconsin.

I miss my sea duty on her an my other navy ship orient express afs4.
My first ship went all over orient. I was deployed more out to sea being combat stores ship.
We made 7 deployments to Indian ocean.
I just wish had invested my money put more away in savings here in my hometown
Massillon Ohio but did nothing to save at all in navy.
I was deck ape on both my ships New Jersey and afs4
I loved my lookout duty but just not long hours chipping paint.

And remember those little destroyers used the same GE propulsion plants, only we had two instead of four. Of course we weighed 5k tons and not 60k.

Correct. Missouri didn't leave for the Persian Gulf till January '91. I believe the Wisconsin was already there.
