Funny Konishiki goes," Oh, you are cook too?" I am jealous that they got to eat the Paul's flatbread... are those reddish chunk sweet potatoes?Hope you liked Chankonabe as well, Paul! So wonderful to see Paul visits all over Japan. Love it
It is interesting to hear a conversation in the heya being conducted in English, but of course Musashigawa Oyakata and his guests are all native English speakers. I wonder what the guy hovering there to clean up thought of it?
This is great, Paul. I went to Japan with a girlfriend back in 2018 and we went to see live sumo one day. Ever since then I was hooked. I went back again 2 days later, and I've watched every tournament on telly ever since. Konishiki was well before my time but I love listening to him tell stories. Did you meet Wakaichiro (an American wrestler at Musashigawa-beya) or had he already retired before you got there? Clearly, Musashigawa Oyakata is a man of few words 😆
I must say I have never been interested in this. I am much more now! Also, just amazed with the discipline, the agility, and the method of training. Loved the video 👍
Brudda Iz's song Tengoku Kara Kaminari made me remember the 3 top Sumo Wrestlers back in the late 90's - "Akebono, Musashimaru and Konishiki. Lol I saw some wrestlers when I lived in Hawaii at the Japan Festival, it was a great experience.
Typically, I'm not the biggest fan in the world of soup in general, but chanko actually looks really good. I really want to try it someday, I wonder how many restaurants here in the states serve Chankonabe, And which ones as well
they often drink beer when they eat, to get more calories.. one pint is round about 200cal, so they drink up to 6 per meal, thats almost half of the recommended daily intake of calories, pretty crazy

Sumo is not a sport.
It is a ritual to pray to the gods for the peace of the country and the happiness of the people.
