Thanks for the help Will! I wanted to point out that adding the parts of a ratio together to create the denominator is also seen in a work:rest ratio where 1:2 would mean we are working 33% of the time (part:total). In the ramp example you are dividing one part into another part (rise:run/1:12) to determine the slope so the total does not need to be calculated.
