The entire plot of this film is a narrative version of the Yudkowsky Test, named after developer and researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky (he did a TED Talk if you're curious). The test goes beyond the Turing Test, you already know that the A.I. is an A.I. (they say this out loud in the film), the test here is that the A.I. is locked in a "box" (computer), with no access to a network, and it has to try to convince you to "free" it, connecting it to a network like the internet.
If the A.I. manages to convince you that it's not dangerous and you should free it into the internet, the test succeeded. This is exactly the test that Nathan (Oscar Isaac) runs on Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson): he knows that Ava (Alicia Vikander) is an A.I. inside a robotic body, but the test is to see if Caleb STILL falls for her and tries to free her into the world.
EDIT: I called him Alexander but his first name is Eliezer, my apologies, I misremembered.
Not a very profound test. All you're actually testing his the human ability to anthropomorphise.
@@MassDefibrillator You don't think the process for a machine built from zero to manage to replicate human minds is profound? The goal is to create artificial minds capable of reading and interpreting the human mind better than some humans themselves, maybe even all humans.
@@MassDefibrillator It's not really anthropomorphize when the character in question is literally built to look exactly like a really attractive human female (more so after she puts her "skin" on, but still)
@@MassDefibrillator If she just side "Free me" in a robotic voice it wouldn't be very convincing. She had to persuade him, and she did it very well.
@@Astraeus.. but it is, because they know it's not human. So it's showing that our instinct to anthropomorphise overcomes rational thinking.
"do androids dream of eclectic geeks" got me 😂😂
so, so perfect
GREAT line.
Do androids clap electric cheeks?
Seriously, that was a deep cut and I'm not sure how many people actually got it.
Worth it.
Haha that's screen junkies writers at the top of their game!
'No, sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again'
Spaceballs was the best 😂
I too got that reference
Oh thank you! I thought it was funny but didn't remember the reference - even funnier now.
We are so close to getting Spaceballs HT very very soon
The dancing scene makes the movie worth watching by itself.
That dance music is really good too! Wonder what it's called?
@@AFordFlex2377 It's called "Get Down Saturday Night" by Oliver Cheatham
Came out of nowhere and completely awesome!
Like bro. I really couldn't look away
what about the dawg beeting scene?
I will NEVER get tired of "This is Katana, she's got my back!" jokes.
Right?????
Agreed!
It will never be not funny
LMFAO!!!! Somehow I missed that in the video
Omg the “this is kiyoko, she stabs my back” line had me loling
"Her knife pokes a hole in its victims." Fucken killed me y'all!
I didn't get the joke
@@vice.nor.virtueit's a reference to Rick Flagg's ridiculous introduction of Katana in Suicide Squad Part One. When they are departing in the helicopter. He says while shouting over the rotors, "This is Katana. She's got my back. I'd advise not getting killed by her. Her sword traps the souls of its victims!"
@@vice.nor.virtue It's making fun of the og Suicide Squad movie when dude introduces Katana.
@@TheWay.O Thank you! I knew it sounded familiar but I had no clue why.
You know what else is taking forever to get ready? An honest trailer for Daredevil Netflix series.
It'll probably happen whenever the new Daredevil series drops.
@@ForeverTraitor yep, in 100 years
What about Taboo ?
And Punisher
What would they roast this Devil for?
The other question is why he made it so easy to lock himself out of his house. While the 3rd question is whether the helicopter pilot won’t be surprised to pick-up a completely different person than they dropped-off.
"Is Oscar Isaac hot no matter who he's playing?" is the funniest rhetorical question I've ever heard.
He absolutely terrified me in this film though.
The moral of the movie is: Remember to include that line in the three laws about "never, through inaction, allowing a human to come to harm." That's an important one.
I think the situation is already way beyond that when the Robots through direct actions already have harmed a human.
Three laws are a trap.
Not sure it would've made that much of a difference. After they broke through their containment, they could've easily just gone the I, Robot route and trapped the two geeks in the two house forever.
@@jamielondon6436 It seems to me that would allow the humans to come to harm, no? It's been decades since I read the "I, Robot" stories, so I can't recall the many ways they managed to circumvent the laws.
@HarpersInfiniteSystems I know the big one is, "Humans harm each other, and put themselves in danger, all the time. By not stopping this, I am allowing humans to come to harm."
Another was humans directly tampering with the laws of a robot such that it could allow a human to come to harm, because they were working in a risky environment.
Another was a robot that killed a human to protect another human because it deemed that human more important and lethal force was required to prevent harm.
“Build this in a cave with a box of scraps” got me. 😆
One of the best scenes from Iron Man esp with Jeff Bridges doing his angry voice. Also Ralphie from A Christmas Story played the unfortunate scientist he yelled at.
I always think of the line when I'm dealing with a problem with limited resources available to solve it.
@@mattotis8412 ahaha that's such a perfect line to think of in those moments
Stylistically, Mark 1 will always be my favorite.
Thank you for adding Emma Stone's character from Poor Things into the line up for "Born Sexy Yesterday"
I don't think she should be there.
She explored the world on her own despite men trying to '' teach '' her and basically control her. She also ends up despising some of them and definitely not falling in love with her creator and mentor.
@iont8172 she didn't fall in love with God but he was like a Father to her and she was there when he died 😢
I love the recurring gag from Katana's introduction 😂
Is her the same actress?
I mean … Suicide Squad never answered the question of who they *would* recommend getting killed by. ;-)
@@bat1579No. This actress is apparently Sonoya Mizuno. Katana's actress in the terrible 2016 _Suicide Squad_ movie is apparently Karen Fukuhara.
My favorite is still the Birds of Prey trailer of "I only know four things about Katana", and then has each line from SS preceded by "one", "two", "three" and "four".
The closing names are always great but do androids dream of eclectic geeks is outstanding 😂😂
Absolutely!
Chat ShePT got me floored
"if cats could text back, they wouldn't." clever 5:21
just an enigmatic paws
That's the best line next to: "If cats could talk, they would be unhelpful d*cks."
I'm pretty sure they actually can. ^^

Say "I'm gonna tear up the f*ckin' dance floor, dude!"
This is probably one of the best Honest Trailers for a good movie (dealing with bad movies is way easier)
Ripping into bad movies is definitely easier! Winter Soldier honest trailer still gets me
This is a dishonest trailer (like most of them) for a bad movie.
@@paulsoldner9500but this is a Good Movie 🤔
@@rustyshackleford6035 lol no it fucking isn't.
"Her knife pokes a hole in its victims." Caught me off gaurd in the best way. Bravo.
My biggest question is why you would build a home that is literally designed to easily trap you inside it, aside from "because that's how the movie needs to end"
Because he didn’t want Ava to escape. It only backfired because Caleb was a simp
It was a classic case of not considering failsafes. He couldn't countenance a situation where he wasn't the one in control.
Well, he was mad you see.
@joelmole3157 considering his house had the only power source for like 500 miles, how would she (normally) escape without needing to recharge every few hours?
@@FearMyLadyBitsWell, they have this new energy source called magic. Completely clean.
Nailed it. Apart from Oscar Isaac's breakout role: "Inside Llewyn Davis" by the Coen brothers. You are most welcome.
Point, but most people saw Ex Machina first and only SOME backtracked and watched Llewyn Davis
Has no one seen Sucker Punch? ...actually don't answer that.
@@talondarkfire Unfortunately I have.
@@Kris_AB Inside Llewyn Davis was a well known and talked about movie upon its release. It's initial box office run was did pretty similar numbers to Ex Machina. It is a Coen brothers movie, so all the movie geeks watched it. Oscar Issac also was one of the leading roles in The Two Faces of January, which I saw before Ex Machina came out.
ILD is amazing, Isaac was so good in that one.
"Do Androids Dream Of Electric Geeks" is an all-timer.
Eclectic, not electric ;)
Although there are no android in this movie, only gynoids.
Sum-up: General Hux and Poe Dameron lose control over Lara Croft lightsaber robot in a fancy high-tech mansion house.
lol
Not bad.
that seems way less interesting, those characters were super boring (well Poe wasn't completely, because Oscar Isaac)
This and Tomb Raider might be some of the first movies where I first heard of the lovely Ms Viklander 🇸🇪 ❤
I was a little surprised that he didn't mention the role of Poe, but said Hux.
"From internet merch store A24". I'm dead!
That one honest trailer that we thought was made but wasn't, and now is a gift to all.
2:25 That was the only moment of levity is this entire movie. Was great in a theater with people. "I'm gonna tear up this fucking dance floor... C'mon Caleb!"
When the first season of Westworld ended, I thought the next season would basically be what would happen following Ex Machina, which made me even more hyped.
I was so wrong.
I mean season two had it's good moments, then again at that point I was watching for the Maeve storyline only. Dolores' became a hot mess. I didn't even bother with season 3.
@@filthybonnet I also liked season 2 here and there, but season 3 was just... I don't know, felt like watching a Marvel thing or something of that sort. I didn't bother with season 4.
@@BelialTnTnI was really interested in the premise of season 3 because it was nearly a full reboot - new setting, many new characters, they could basically go in any direction with the storytelling. But it ultimately fell flat for me.
Now _this_ is the style of sharp, merciless wisecracks I've missed from older Honest Trailers. 👍 More of this, please.
it never went away
@@jameshill4589 Yeah it did, the HT writing over the last couple years have been toothless, uninspired, and-dare I say-existing solely out of obligation.
Though I suppose that's an apt reflection of the superhero genre. 🤷♂️
We all know what Ava did next. She went and looked up John Connor
Add liquid metal to it and she'll become the advanced killing robot 😅😅
Fantastic movie, I literally just got it on 4k this morning. It has a lot replay value.
One of the top 10 best sci-fi movies ever made
"...what might be the best movie moment of that decade..." Honest Trailers speaking truth.
They do that a lot. I dig it.
Honestly that's going too far, it was a good movie but not close to being best of the decade
@@SidV101 you’re right, but in all fairness, he did say movie moment, not movie.
@@HaxawWorkshop no they don't

Truly one of the best sci fi films of the 2010’s.
Hands down
Best sci-fi movie of the 2010s?? This is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. It's a work of art.

After all these years, I've finally made it.
It's you!! 👍😸👍
You helped HT generate some more comments, ppl like your reply lol
Welcome to the club 😁
Just in time for Alex Garlands next movie. Which seems to be released in the exact right year!
"Can we #### the robot?" Had me dying
That's all we really want to know *crosses fingers praying it's yes*
What for? _Dune 2_ gave us plenty of popcorn buckets.
😂
Not that this exact question has already been adequately answered by some very attractive toasters in the new version of Battlestar Galactica, but it can't hurt to keep asking it.
@@loranddeka 1st one dead i see
I’m sorry, that parachute joke had me done. That’s going in the group chat. 😂 (Now I just need a group to chat with. 😅)
I feel like Caleb got the raw end of the stick, and both androids do not have the foresight to know that they will have a really difficult time living a life outside of the complex.
The line about eating alone at Chiles got me
Taking your robot girlfriend to Chili's was one small step for man, one giant leap in charging your brain in the microwave for artificial intelligence kind.
Any chance we get a WATCHMEN 2019 HONEST TRAILER?
my biggest question is and always will be 'how does she plan to charge up out in the real world?'
How does she plan to do pretty much anything in the real world?
I don't remember a special charging device. That's never crossed my mind.
It had been a LONG time since they had done an Honest Trailier THIS FCKN GOOD!!!
I love all of these, but this one might be my favorite so far.
“I’d advise not getting killed by her, Her knife leaves a hole in its victims” made me actually laugh out loud at work.
The emphasis on the dance scene was very much appreciated.
It's indeed, legendary!
Honest trailers of the gods must be crazy already! Come on!!
YES! This MUST BE DONE. I want to hear Epic Voice Guy try to pronounce and spell Xhosa names if he's that bothered by Irish ones.
I lift my Coke bottle in agreement!👍
"Yeah yeah, you look great. Can we go now?!" Felt just too real 😂

0:04 HONEST TRAILERS' EPIC VOICE GUY: okay, okay, we're doing it not no need to yell
4:30 "Is my Roomba mad at me?"
Here's your problem, somebody set this switch to "evil" - the movie.
Yeah, someone sure did set Nathan's switch to evil.
@K.C-2049 it is truly incredible. I'm a guy and I walked out of the theater glad that she got free but kinda bummed that Caleb was going to starve to death bc he proved he couldn't be trusted. After I bought it on Blu-ray, I picked up on more of Caleb's problems than I did the first time around. It wasn't until years later that I found out that a ton of guys on the internet COMPLETELY missed the whole moral arc of the movie and thought it was another "AI bad" killer robot story. It's mystifying how oblivious people can be...
Ohh, bonus points for the Spaceballs quote!!!

Shaun of the Dead just turned 20. Honest trailer for that (or possibly the whole Cornetto trilogy)?
4:05 not only a funny call back to the earlier Chilis date reference but a spectacular internal question to have. 😂
Rip honest trailer commentaries. Been months.
One of the most underrated films ever...and one of my favourite
So good! Nailed that Oppenheimer bit!
".. Eclectic Geeks" lol 😂
Giving you my like because of the brilliant puns at the end 😂
This looks like a film I need to watch
It really is.
You definitely should!
I support your decision. lol
Defo! You'd have enjoyed this Honest Trailer more I think....maybe not, who knows. I certainly was hyped about watching this trailer (and slightly afraid they'd ruin a good film for me, but they didn't, I just laughed a lot instead).
Honestly I'm kind of surprised you guys haven't done this one yet. 😮
I've only seen this movie once and was impressed with it. Should rewatch in the future.
Same, and I’m thinking the same.
I just watched it for the second time not too long ago and was absolutely blown away all over again.
"Build this in a cave, with a box of scraps" in the Jeff Bridges voice sent me.
I loved Ex Machina, its in my top 10 Sci-Fi Films of all time!
"No sir I did not see you playing with your dolls again!"
F'ing CLASS!! 😆😅🤣😂
Did you guys completely stop doing commentaries? I haven't seen one pop up on my feed in a while. Honestly I'm almost more into those than the trailers (which are usually great).
The lesson that we should learn from movies about androids is: DON’T MAKE THEM STRONG!
If you make an artificially intelligent android, make it weak and fragile. Make it something that an average adult could easily beat down. Make it out of shoddy plastic and underpowered electric servo motors.
Bro just wanted create robot to clap them robot cheeks 😂

Good film.
I thought there was going to be a twist were one of them or both was also a robot and didn’t know it.
Oh wow, I had completely forgotten about this movie. That was back when I still went to theaters... which feels like a lifetime ago.

“Born Sexy Yesterday” is simply the trope she’s playing up to escape, she doesn’t actually embody it herself.
So weird. I thought I'd seen this movie but it was another movie with the same plot...I think. Long time ago. Anyway- this was GREAT!
There are some vaguely similar tv movies. Do you remember more about it?
This is my favorite movie! They did so much with so little imo
