His singing is even more than the sheer beauty and artistry of his voice. He does believe every word he sings, and often when he finishes a beautiful and powerful song like that, it seems hard for him to let go of the worship and rejoin people on stage.

David Phelps has always been an excellent singer, and I think performing largely in gospel circles has heightened that “sensitivity” you talked about. It has helped develop him into a singer that strikes the perfect balance between technical proficiency and emotional accessibility. The “sensitivity” and “living what he’s singing” you mentioned and the technical choices he makes make his already beautiful tone so emotionally satisfying to hear. It’s fun seeing others have the same reaction to him. I get goosebumps every time.

Went to his concert last month. David is truly anointed by God! Ken, you should do a whole series like this featuring more gospel talents: Sandi Patty, Larnelle Harris, Lauren Talley, Jason Crabb, etc.
Ken, thank you again for another superb analysis and commentary. David has been around for quite sometime and the gospel world has some truly gifted vocal talents. Many of them have been approached by secular recording entities to sing secular songs but only a few defect while those that hold true to their genre become even greater. Bill Gaither has really chosen some of the best talent around and many careers have been started through him. By now you are probably understanding that my taste in music is almost limitless as I love exploring the many styles and genres the world has to offer. My taste for Russian vocals is probably my greatest weakness in that there are many profoundly superb vocalists and singers. In American gospel I enjoyed Bob Bailey and Philip Bailey ( formerly of Earth, Wind and Fire), Phil Driscoll's voice ( similiar to old Joe Cocker ) and his mighty trumpet, Kathy Tracolli or Trocolli, and so many more. Any one of these would be an excellent study in singing techniques. They are older voices but represent the beginnings of contemporary dynamics in Gospel. By the way Bob and Philip Baileys are not related and sing their music under different recording labels. I think you might find some interesting surprises in how these all handle song. I am not certain how easy it would be to get any videos or recordings of these people. Kathy Trocolli has a velvety flavor with some other things in her voice that add up to create her singing expression and masterful delivery. Well, it was nice talking to you again as I take the journey of the singing experience with you as the host. I await more pleasant surprises from you. I consider him to be one of the greatest singers I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. His range is incredible and his control is something even a large amount of trained singers wish they had naturally. This is one of my favorite songs by him. He can be a little theatrical as you pointed out, but I love his tone and control. 5 or 6 years ago he sang Agnus Dei with his daughter, Maggie Beth (that video is also on TH-cam) and it was in listening to that I heard operatic potential in him. His control in that one is incredible as well. Worth a listen. On a complete side note, my Dad saw you in concert years ago and remembers that he almost got to touch you lol. He loves the 80s Christian rock/metal. I told him about this great vocal coach on YT named Ken Tamplin and he was like what the heck? I went to his concert years ago! So when you have posted videos of yourself singing, I send them along to him and he loves it. You haven't lost your touch! Truth be told, I had no idea you were an 80s Christian artist until he said that. But I think that's pretty cool since the 80s is my jam all the way. I wish I could sing rock/metal like that! One great advantage David has is that he is a natural tenor. David is not a baritone with some high notes. Not that there is anything wrong or bad about a baritone having some high notes. However, it makes it more natural and easier when u have a naturally placed high voice. When he sings it sounds normal, natural and beautiful. Unbelievable voice! David has that rare voice that comes along not so often.

Erik me and my buddy called that group the Powerhouse group David Guy and Mark if you ever saw them live you didnt forget it but I loved the first 5 man lineup to with David Mark Wes hampton and Michael English there was some power in that group

One great advantage David has is that he is a natural tenor. David is not a baritone with some high notes. Not that there is anything wrong or bad about a baritone having some high notes. However, it makes it more natural and easier when u have a naturally placed high voice. When he sings it sounds normal, natural and beautiful. Unbelievable voice! David has that rare voice that comes along not so often.

Amazing when you said he s living what he is singing. In his interview he sad the same thing. I can see you both think alike. My sister can sing wonderfully. She said what you did..wow...live and as mentioned naked....nothing to bail him out.

Sir, Ken please check David singing the song Oh Holy Night. When it comes to singing the soprano Guy Penrod is what I root for and he is my favourite and when it comes to Tenor there is non like David he is Gifted and ofcourse a graduate from Balor certified Tenor singer.❤️❤️🔥

Got the chance to see the Gaither Vocal Band live with David Phelps, Guy Penrod, Mark Lowry and Bill Gaither and it is even better live then a recording. Wish everyone could see that line up live, it was amazing. Great review Ken.
Erik me and my buddy called that group the Powerhouse group David Guy and Mark if you ever saw them live you didnt forget it but I loved the first 5 man lineup to with David Mark Wes hampton and Michael English there was some power in that group

I saw the same video. Was really good. And I was also waiting for a reaction of David, thanks for it! I also like how you brought up the enunciation of the words. I always wondered about that especially during worship but I guess He looks at the heart more so than the singing so no need to enunciate every word. :)
