I think after Joyce and Hopper's visit, with the newspaper clippings and questions and all, she probably became more likely to believe that El was, in fact, taken by the lab and might have powers too. They gave some legitimacy to the possibility that it was plausible. So by the time El showed up, she was a little less shocked than she would have been. Anyway, that's what I think.
