A lot of people call people smurfs when they’re 1 or 2 ranks below where they should be but in reality a lot of the time it’s because you’re good enough to hang with “your rank” but the gap between say champ 3 and GC2 isn’t so monumental that it just means you can carry in champ 3 lobbies. Sometimes you just go on a bad run, end up lower ranked than you’re used to.. and then get stuck for a while. Doesn’t mean you’re a smurf
I always go as the second man if I’m going to boom and it’s a clean beat. Maybe it’s a mistake if I misjudge the beat, but it usually works out well otherwize

When you see someone doing the fundamentals consistently you can tell it’s a Smurf. I’m GC3 and you just KNOW when someone is good by how they execute the fundamentals. Someone doing a triple flip reset doesn’t immediately tell me that they are good.

Im c3 rn and have been for a year now breaking the concrete ceiling into gc only gets harder and harder as more gc2 and even season 12-13 ssl titles somehow find their way into my lobbies. It almost feels like im being gatekept
I think with this sort of series, some sort of challenges should have been put in your way, such as playing on Higher Ping like on EU servers, and maybe something weird like switching AirRoll Right to AirRoll Left, that could force you to be less mechanical
after hitting c3 about 2 years ago an being stuck in c1 and c2 since then... this is so normal. In c2 you never know who you're gonna get paired with or up against. When he said his first game in a c3 lobby was a drastic change, welcome to another day in the office for us
Letting go off air roll and using it less has been huge. I'm so much more consistent with my hits and aerials. I feel like a bot when I use air roll minimally but It's so much more effective. The C3 players I match with overruse it just like I did before and you can tell how it effects their consistency. These videos are really informative, thank you.
ok so im borderline C3 and the last game seems a lot more consistent with how most games look. double taps, flip resets, ceiling shots, and redirects seem to be a normal part of gameplay
As a consistent champ 2, a lot of us air roll and all that stuff for double taps, air dribbles and attempt to get resets, I think you’re playing with the mechs a little too low, just the game sense is crazy 😮
This episode was the one I have been looking forward to most, because my rank in 2s is c3/gc1. What I've noticed from hovering around this rank is that the level of opponent and teammate varies greatly. Your teammate in the third game is the perfect example of this. He's clearly much better than the other team but he also isn't a smurf. It seems quite common for these better players to be at this rank. Sometimes you come up against players like myself who have no mechanics (I can't even speed flip / fast kickoff lol) but are pretty decent at the basics. Other times you play against players who can consistently flip reset, air dribble etc. I know mechanics aren't everything but even so the huge disparity in what players at the same rank can do makes the games very inconsistent. I don't entirely understand why this is the case, perhaps they just don't grind the game or are 'bad' teammates. But it is very common in my experience.
I really appreciate how youve helped me simplify my gameplay. Ive never been able to make it past d3 but im starting to see drastic improvement in my field iq.

When their teammate isn't Squishy, they might forget to play the part of a defensive line to their net. This could lead them to becoming stuck in champ, and feeling "washed."

Pros rarely understand the current capability of high champ/low gc players. Yes, massive difference in consistency compared to high gc/ssl/pro but if you’re at least capable of most any play, it makes things very interesting and difficult to predict.
For what it's worth, it's not uncommon to see former grand champs in Diamond 3 to Champ 1 in 2s and 3s now. It's not that we are smurfing. Sure we probably don't play the game much anymore. But there is also just so often salty teammates or teammates intentionally throwing, that make it quite difficult to consistently solo queue above champ 1 without insane mechs. I certainly see the poor defensive play issues happen all the time (2nd man overcommits), which is most tilting for me. Nonetheless, I am sure most of those who get stuck in those ranks in later seasons, could improve through much of the positional choices that you've pointed out, plus working on cleaner kickoffs. Especially realizing when it's better not to rush the ball, and instead improve our shadow defense. Also inspiring to see you doing aerial mechs so well with zero air roll, making it seem more viable to start practicing some of these mechs more again in such simple forms, and then consider trying more advanced versions again.
