More Dream Theater, Rush And Iron Maiden next week as well as some new bands! We've got a lot of great suggestions and are working hard to film, edit and keep the content flow consistent. Thanks to all the subscribers and to all who have commented with suggestions, tips, and just general thoughts. We appreciate the support very much!

Fun fact about Take the Time, it was written at the time where they were auditioning for a permanent singer (before they had James). Each verse of the song was written by a different member and what they felt at that time of finding a new band member.
Verse 1: Mike Portnoy ("Just let me catch my breath...I think it's time for a change!")
Verse 2: John Myung ("There is something that I feel, to be something that is real...I won't waste another breath!")
Verse 3: John Petrucci ("The unbroken spirit, obscured and disquiet...Suppression that he feels must turn to hope.")
Bridge: Kevin Moore ("I close my eyes and feel the water rise around me...I can see much clearer now I'm blind.)
Chorus is written by all of them
You could also surmise who wrote what by seeing the verses. You'll know what Mike's lyrics are because its the straightforward one; Myung's is when it talks about mind and feelings; JP's poetry; and Kevin's vague yet meaningful lines.

While many consider Images & Words as their best, I'm on the camp where I think the album Awake is their best. On a songwriting standpoint, ideas there have more thought put into it while I&W seem to display their raw talent. Both are good, in fact, I can listen to I&W front to back casually no problem, but Awake just puts you in a certain mood that leaves quite an impression.

I stumbled across this channel this morning, and I've ceased my morning productivity to watch some videos and comment. Being the fan of bands I am (Rush, Dream Theater, etc...) there are LOTS of reaction videos. With that said, I'm curious about the comments at the start of the video. Im with Kenneth in that Awake is an awesome album, but I&W was my introduction to Dream Theater, and after seeing it live in its entirety a few years ago on tour, it remains the "best" in my eyes (though the songs are better on Awake.) Regarding the comments, is there still a lot of backlash against Mangini vs Portnoy? They're certainly different drummers, but Mangini holds his own in his own right. He's a bit more robotic, but that pinpoint accuracy is what some people, myself included, dig about Dream Theater. Thanks for the great videos! Keep up the good work!

Yes it's without doubt their best album - a masterpiece and the real representation of Dream Theater. Not a weak moment on the entire album. Consummate professionals. There's not a single thing to dislike on the album. Pure genius compositions and musicianship. On a scale of 1 - 10 this album is a 20.

I was 19 when this came out and "Pull Me Under" blew me away. "Take The Time" is my favorite off this album, but their best album by far is "Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory". That album gave me such a mental block that I found it difficult to enjoy any Dream Theater albums after it for years. It's quite the measuring stick to this day ...

I really enjoy watching you two. Progressive metal is the jam and DT does it best. I'd definitely suggest to show your wife surrounded and under a glass moon off I&W.
Edit: when I started with DT, I didn't like the synths either, similar to your wife. I came from a pre-power windows rush background so the keyboard was something I just didn't like. But DT does it so tight that I learned how to enjoy them. They really do add a nice touch to almost all of the songs.

Great song, Dream Theater were my favourite band for many years! My opinion differs from many other fans' in that I think "A Dramatic Turn of Events" might be their best album. Closely followed by "Metropolis Pt.2" and this one.
If you'd like to try something very fresh and unique, please consider checking out BABYMETAL. They are a Japanese band with young girls singing and dancing to a fusion of Metal and J-Pop. Very energetic and uplifting. It's not for everyone, but if you are open minded enough to appreciate their new ways, you can have more fun than with any other band. I know I do!

Well for a different change of pace I would recommend you checking out "Consciousness Pt. 1 & Pt. 2" together by a band named Persefone. They take a good deal of inspiration from Dream Theater among other bands and just make a sound that is completely their own. It is an instrumental song but very much worth a listen. Their vocals are definitely on the heavier side of metal but you won't have to worry about that if that's not your cup of tea.

It's a shame that their new stuff just doesn't match up to the old. It's not that the talent isn't there. Even with Mangini instead of Portnoy they're an all star group. Their recent albums have been GOOD, but they don't seem as hungry to write truly inspired and progressive stuff anymore.

I don't think these song are the best for someone that just started listening to Dream Theater... Way too theatrical and "outdated"... She'll need to ease up into it. I'd recommend early 00's albums, like Train of Thought, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Octavarium, and Black Clouds and Silver Linings. Lots of great songs to pick from these. And these are way more palatable and easy to digest for someone who doesn't get DT, yet.

Without Kevin Moore the band changed a lot... and not for good always, and without Portnoy I just gave up on them, actually I like their albums til Scenes, from then on I just got bored, just my humble opinion, I'm not denying their musical talent and skills but its just too much

I think James' voice is turning her off the rest of the music.
Check out Devin Townsend (Kingdom - EMGtv), Queensryche (Take Hold Of The Flame - Tokyo '84), Unleash The Archers (Awakening), Nightwish (Ghost Love Score), and Jinjer (Teacher Teacher) for some better vocals.

I like Dream Theater but to be honest...the drums sound fake...and these epic 10 minute songs are too polished. Obviously they are all virtuosos but I dont get any emotion from them. And that makes a big difference. Its like Yngwie Malmsteen vs Joe Satriani. Both technically great...but Satch just has that emotion you can hear. Saw DT in concert a couple times and once I almost fell asleep. The other time they played with Queensryche so no sleeping that time.

    Great song. Boring reaction video.

      @@OutLoudStudios Sure do.
Your wife seemed dragged infront of the camera, although it has eventually grown on her. She was probably more giggly from the situation - being filmed, knowing hundreds will see you guys - than the music.
And you, the guy, knew the music and dig it, which you state many times in various ways.
A decent reaction video must be a FIRST reaction, imo. And while your wife's reaction was a first, it was mostly based on your input, your reaction, not the music itself. I'm not trying to put her down, but she didn't really sell it as a music lover, prone to hear and react to progressive metal. Which a reactor to this music ought to be.
Hey, I know reaction videos are an easy way to get views (since band's fan base oftentimes get them in their recommendations, as I did). But I would totally reconsider the content if I were you.
      Good luck.

@@OutLoudStudios Do Space-Dye Vest, a DT song that is as heartwrenching as it is beautiful (as you know). Maybe without you next to her - if she's cool with it - since I feel her reactions are very influenced by you.
That would make an interesting video. :)

Thanks for the input. We will definitely be doing reactions to songs we don't know so that neither of us is already going in with a prepared mindset.
I think your right about me not influencing her so much. I think we can still get the contrast between us while being more natural.
This is only our first few videos so we are learning.

      @@OutLoudStudios Yeah, I could've guessed you're fairly knew to this. :)
Yes, I feel her honest reaction was quite hampered by your presence. Don't put her through that again, I'd say. Ditch your favourite tunes and go explore together! :)
Ever heard Plini? If not, react to Electric Sunrise (for example - he's got many nice tunes). Instrumental, guitar based. Quite progressive, really playful, and more joyful than maybe DT.

The live version of this off that 1992(?) dvd in Japan is fantastic.
The send off solo is way better than this studio version.
