Sound guy here. What they are using is FX. All it is an echo effect to soften the vocals. Every singer uses this live. This is still his natural voice, it's just enhanced by the sound guys in the booth. Nothing wrong with this, it's completely legit and normal.
Ironically, the band thinks of the opposite that's why they ditched Cove but back then before they picked him up he almost have the same voice and range as Anthony. It was a different time and era. Weird.

Anthony is such a stupid good vocalist. This whole EP is good, never heard this version of the song but it really shows his vocal talent. I love the energy of the studio version, but this is equally as good in it's own way.

@spridle i know this was posted a while ago but ill answer this anyways... autotune doesnt always sound "t-pain'ish". you can turn up and down the speed of how fast it corrects the pitch. therefore, the lower the speed; the less noticeable it is.

@spridle An actual auto-tuner (like an Antares AVP-1) when used normally makes your voice sound great and on-key. It's when you max out the settings that you get the effect. These days there's a lot of dedicated software/hardware that give you the T-Pain version of the effect but don't actually do the real job of an auto-tuner, which is to put you on pitch. In all honesty though, it should be called the Cher effect since she did it first in 1998.
I love this version soooo much better. Maybe cause I was so use to it with Anthony. Cove just absolutely rocks this song, his way! All Saosin fans have to love it regardless if it isn't the same, if you can't appreciate it then your not a true fan of the band

@spridle All auto-tune is the same. Different artists add different effects, but it still does the job of correcting your notes. The difference between rappers and other users - rappers intentionally sing out of tune so the autotuner works better. Yes, the more sharp or flat you are, the better the autotune works. I tried one myself and it actually doesn't do a whole lot if you're more accurate. Kinda bummed me out.

The only reason he sounds good here is because its a record company release. Capitol records got involved with this for the DVD release. So, he got a mad amount of reverb on his voice, a tuner on the microphone to sound better and , his microphone is very loud , so you cant really hear how bad he sounds. When he said words, you can hear him struggling a little bit, but im assuming the engineers cleaned that up. Record companys arent always evil. They come through lol. They made him sound sooooo good on this . The funny part is that he never sounded good for this song ever again except for this one night lol

I'm pretty sure its not autotune its just some reverb or some other similar effect on the voice. It just makes it sound spacious.
