Sheffield still exist as an amateur club. They have proposed a new stadium at Meadowhead, south Sheffield

They are currently playing in Dronfield, Derbyshire I believe. It will be nice to see them return to Sheffield. Sheffield are known of course as the oldest club in the world, but interestingly Hallam FC, also from Sheffield are the second oldest club in the world and still play at their original ground, Sandygate, having done so since their formation in 1860. Proper football hotbed Sheffield. 🙂👍

It's always interesting to discover that some of these teams have a direct connection to present-day clubs. I believe that Swifts became Slough Town, for instance. The other thing that intrigues me is why sides withdrew; I can't help but envisage officials standing on a station platform cursing under their breath when only half a dozen players have turned up because the rest can't get time off from work, or some similar scenario.

Yes, I think the modern Slough Town F.C. has connections to four or five teams including Swifts F.C. Swifts, Slough Albion and Young Men's Friendly Society merged to form Slough F.C. This club then merged with Slough Centre F.C. to become Slough United F.C. before splitting again with Slough F.C. becoming Slough Town F.C. The history fascinates me, as single clubs often are the result of mergers and the original clubs tend to get forgotten. I think clubs withdrawing was as you said, inability to get a team together. Also travel was an issue for some, most of the clubs were in London and the south. As teams were amateur, travel was expensive. Although Queen's Park's record of withdrawal is somewhat comical 😂

@@BritanniaFootball would Upton Park have become West Ham?

I looked into this and it appears that there are links between the two clubs, thought they are not the same. Upton Park played at West Ham Park. West Ham United, then known as Thames Ironworks, played in Canning Town. Some players played for both teams. West Ham United moved to the area as there was more interest in football there. The Boleyn Ground, known as Upton Park, was a different ground and it seems West Ham United eventually replaced Upton Park in the area.

@@BritanniaFootball sweet! and it was the Upton Park grounds name that gave me the idea for it - knew it was called the Boleyn Ground but forgot it was the nickname.Thank you!
