- Step-by-step disassembly of the 4.9 L S62 V8 engine from BMW E39 M5. The engine has 226k km / 140k miles and due to scored cylinders, we are taking it apart. Project Skovde spent 13 years off the road and we are on a mission to restore it completely to absolute perfection, starting with the engine.

Buckle up, folks! This is about to be the most detailed S62 tear-down TH-cam has ever seen-73 glorious minutes of engine bliss! Grab a cold beer (or maybe two), get comfy, and prepare to be dazzled by every bolt, gasket, and questionable life choice that led us here. It’s basically a feature film for gearheads…but with more grease and fewer happy endings. 😂
I have 4 cold beers. Lets go🎉
I've got 4 bottles of whiskey.......COOMING UP! 😜🤠
I’m getting shit faced rn
What a great video. Cant wait till next one
I drunk two 32 ounces i just stopped paying attention and am just like wooooowww coooool
FINALLY!! My two favorite things. E39s and uploads from the best channel on TH-cam!
Yup 😊😊😊
This young man is so entertaining and very informative and professional in his videos.
The most entertaining way to watch someone work is, to watch you work. Time flies and it seems like an hour turns into a minute. Thank you for that, I love your style and your channel.
73 minutes of M5 wrenching bliss, perfect start to the year!
Time flys like nothing. Unfortunately 🙏
Watched the rear subframe rebuild multiple times 🙈
@@maki0890I have watched his e92 m3 playlist countless times also.
Nice disassembly of the damaged M5 engine. Good job as always!
Sreten, one kind reminder: when you zinc plating bolts, bear in mind that 10.9 and 12.9 bolts are not suitable for zinc plating due to Hydrogen embrittlement, so please consult with your plating shop about it. Hydrogen from acids can enter the crystal structure of those high-tensile-class materials and to simplify it, cause "rust" around the crystal borders, meaning they can snap at any time under tension. There is a heat treatment for 10.9 bolts that lowers the likeliness of breaking zinc-plated ones but that is not 100% insurance. Those high tensile class bolts (10.9 and 12.9) are usually zinc flake coated. I know how particular you can be so just want to add my two cents; keep up the good work!
You can have them de embrittled shortly after plating to negate this. We often have this done on high tensile materials >1000n/mm² that need plating.
Noted. Thank you, appreciate it!
In case anyone doesn't know this, this channel is called M539 restorations, so this car is this channels specialty
How wonderful, I just got home after taking my driving test, I passed and now I'm going to relax watching the video. Greetings from Brazil.
This video is made of 24k solid gold. The full restoration of the most iconic engine of the most iconic BMW of the last three decades ❤❤❤
Every minute of Sretens videos is another minute the entire world calms down. Grab a beer and admirer skilled and careful craftsmanship. So thankful to have this channel!
You just had to release this in the middle of my work day - now I need to tell my boss that I'm sick so I watch this video to the end!!!
I was really confused for a second until i remembered that this isnt a german speaking chanel and you could be located somewhere else haha.
1.5hr lunch break isnt so bad, im sure your boss will understand ;)
@@D3nn1s In The Netherlands, you quickly eat a cheese sandwich (broodje kaas) behind your desk. 10 minutes at most.
@@sys-administrator for lunch? at 12 oclock? seriously? bro we have 15min break at 9 and 1hr break at 12
@ Officially most people have a 30 minute break at 12, unpaid. But most people just stuff a sandwich in their mouth and continue working
Had a crazy stressful day and this is just what I need to relax. Thanks a lot for all the steps taken to explain 😊
The king of car mechanics, I can't put into words the joy I feel watching your work, it is so relaxing I didn't even feel the hour went by. Keep it up and be sure that your audience is appreciating every second of your videos. I am considering to rewatch project Raleigh as it is my favourite of them all, my dream car, just so I have some of your content to fill the time until the next upload. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being the way you are and delivering this type of content.
I'd love to see a Behind The Scenes type video. I'm curious to see how you keep track of all the parts and stuff like that.
Underrated comment 👍
Not to mention the research on proper procedures and the order of teardown/rebuilding! As someone that is about to replace many of the internals on my 944 Turbo the task seems daunting!
Holly crap.what the heck I just watched.
I'm so impressed by the high quality tear down of this beast
a wonderful way to spend my evening; watching an S62 engine being meticulously disassembled and prepared to be an OEM+ Build!
I am absolutely hypnotized watching you work, you could be sitting watching paint dry and I would be happy watching you. Keep it up!
You just fell love in the air working with S62 engine compared to the Quattrobroken series.
It was different and interesting journey too, but you can hear from the voice that relationship with Maserati wont going to last :D
Thank you Sreten for a good Tuesday evening
That's pure free enjoyment here. No netflix, no bs, no ads. I was wondering yesterday when was the last video and there you are. Delivering with an astonishing movie. Flawless mate. True inspiration, this is was influencing means. You make us want to do the same to our cars. Hope this video gets the publicity it deserves.
It's a good tuesday night when you've got your beer, and a fresh episode of M539.
You're a legend sir, keep doing what you do
Best way to spend my lunch break, can't wait to see Project Skovde in it's final form
Holy crap I can't wait to watch this. The best channel on TH-cam bar none. I have said it many times but thank you Sreten.
Everything up to this build led up to it. Sreten's skill level is beyond exceptional! This is MUST WATCH for those in love with BMW vehicles. Big shout out to the Alpina that started this engine rebuild journey!
This channel has grown to be one of my favorite ones to watch, period. across any channel, any app, the level of detail, knowledge, humor and pure entertainment is on point. awesome work again brutha, keep on keeping on ;)
I just love how thorough you are with everything
Engine rebuilds are my favorite type of videos, looking forward to a M60b40 rebuild :D
your youtube channel is what keeps me from turning off notifications from youtube, i always look forward to it
Свака част Сретене, немам ништа осим речи хвале за тебе као и увек!! Срећна нова година и још више успеха него икад пре. Поздрав из наше лепе домовине мајке Србије ❤
I remember when a friend drove us in his Le Mans blue M5 from Ljubljana to Koper, and when we got to Koper he had to buy a liter of oil just to top up the engine :D He drove the hell out od that M5, and man did it sound goooooood! The speed limiter was set to 299 km/h xD Also that pose at 03:46 with the apple picker killed me :D Keep up the awesome work Sreten, will have beer and čevapi on your behalf!
That car is going to look soooo nice when it is finally done! And I'm here for the ride(along)!
Gonna be awesome with that blue interior once this beast is finished.
There's nothing better then seeing these detailed engine builds. Keep it up.
The 4K resolution and great lighting/editing of these videos makes them a joy to watch. As does the humour 😁
Sreten's videos are such an asset to the BMW community.
This is just flat out amazing, a full E39 build like this is what I would want to do on my E38 and you have given me so many ideas on what to do with it. I cannot wait to watch every episode that comes out on this car!
Keeping Alive those Beautiful Machines... Man.. You are a real living legend
This is the best way to start the New Year!! Thank you Sreten!! 😇
bro year started 15 days ago 😂😂
Today is the first of January according to the Julian calendar, which is used in the Orthodox faith, to which Sreten belongs@@dali_d
for orthodox Christians it is the first day of the new year😂😂😂
I don't think i have every seen a more meticulous person doing anything. Anyboby buying a second hand car from him is getting the best of the best.
Simply magic, love the videos!
Enjoying the content, as always. Plus, e39 is one of the greatest of all times for me. Just one remark. Thrust side and non thrust side are in the same plane. Thrust is the one which takes more side force from piston skirt because piston is leaning against it during combustion (as a result of cranktrain design).
Ahh, a Back to the Roots Video! My evening is saved.
Happy New Year Sreten.
We hope you have another great year.
The best you tube Chanel that hasn't got to 1millon Subs.. Get to it guys it costs nothing and the best content is always available.
1 hour just flew by, looking forward to seeing this one come together.
I've been following your channel for a long time. Now every third video is about taking the engine out🤯 it's a pleasure to see how you and your channel are growing. fantastic video I can't wait for the next one 💪
Can't wait! I'm sure Partee/Peter's magic will be incredible. Looking forward to seeing this build progress.
Thank you so much for always putting such amazing content and great videos. You've truly become my favorite TH-camr and I pretty much stop everything when I see you've uploaded. Before you, I was a big BMW fan but stuck to simpler models (mostly E36 and E46) but you inspired me to truly appreciate the classic golden era of BMW. Because of you I was inspired and comfortable enough to get an E38 750iL like Project Dubai. And not only that, but comfortable and confident enough to work on such a complex car like an M73 E38. Thank you again so much for the amazing content.
Dope. This was a goal of mine. I had a kid now I have to sell my E39 M5 (in Denver if anyone is interested). Peters engines are amazing. I have had seat time in an OEM+ build and it felt like a different animal compared to mine. Best of luck!
Hello fellow Denver m539 fan! If I had room for a second car I’d be interested but alas!
Very much looking forward to seeing this engine build progress
More E39 M5 content! Best channel ever! Thank you!
I would pay to see this in the cinema! 😝
This was the perfect upload to pass time at a long connection! Thanks Sreten
Man I loved the last 5 min of this video!! Seeing how excited you get working on these BMW’s 💪🏻 it just makes me excited as well 😁
Good luck with the build !
Thanks for showing the organizing that goes into these projects as well!
Love your series and please also check the CO level ! We would like to see you a little bit longer. CO is the silent killer. Keep on going Sreten!
Had to scroll so far to find another comment about this. Good on you.
Love all of your work Sreten. I am however blown away by the amount of varnish and sludge in this M engine. Just a good example of how not to treat any BMW engine, let alone an M engine.
This is a Masterclass!! Thank you, Streten!!
This is the best car channel on TH-cam.
The S65 is what brought me to this channel. Love to see another over the top oem+ restoration. Dream car is a 135 with the S65 swap. (droooool)
Love it, this sort of content has completely changed how I maintain my E39 540, keep it coming 👍
I am always stunned how easy it is to work on an engine that is outside. Compared to the work and the tiny hands you need when working inside the car.
Zbog tebe sam počeo da učim zanat.Sad radim u jednom servisu.Hvala što si me sad još više navuko na jedinu stvar koja je skuplja gudre.Auta
i was just telling my coworker how its been 3 weeks and im itching for more M539 content and you delivered!
as a BMW tech, i need that Hazet scope
its the disassembly for me. precise and calculated.
Amazing editing. Thank you 👍
As someone who has toiled over my BMWs for years, this is my favorite channel on YT.
I emitted a Sreten-esque squeal of excitement when I got a new video notification about an S62 teardown
Kvalitetan Nemački inžinjering! Hvala Sretenu sto snima ovako kvalitetan sadržaj! Veliki pozdrav iz Beograda
I was just Thinking, now would be the perfect time for a m539 video!!
When you reassemble, don’t forget to fit that small pipe before you do the head bolts 👍
Great video again on our beloved M5 E39 the GOAT 😎 always learn New stuffs with your very detailled and informative videos, I thought originally that exhaust manifolds were from M62, so it’s even from M60. Thanks Streten.
everytime i see a new vid of yours it's like a present for Christmas
Fuuuuuuuuuukkkkkk yes!!! My man! Making me relive my own timing chain guide repair from 2 years ago, and cannot wait for you to visit Partee racing!! M5Board God!!
As ironic as it sounds near the end of this video… as I was on my way home today in my glorious 03 M5, I had a Maserati Ghibli pull up behind me and witness S62 symphony and torque, thumbs up from the young Maserati driver…
Cooooming up....another amazing engine tear down with all the tips and hints im sure all of us will learn from. Great video Uncle Bob👍
Id love to see Valvoline Restore and Protect on this engine to see if it removes all the varnish. Love these Videos.
Them engineers didn't hold back to design the S62.... I'm scratching my head just to remember what I watched... Alot and I mean alot involved. Props to you M539.. awaiting the rebuild and the e21 progress
e39 m5 is my dream car, some people have lambos and porsches but... something about the e39 man ! great video as always, looking forward to more. Love from Paderborn.
Can’t wait for the engine rebuild video. You are the only TH-camr i don’t skip parts in the video’s 😃 keep up the good work 💪🏻
Can’t wait for the caper blasting cabinet
Soon as you said Partee Racing I got goosebumps. It's gonna be awesome.
Never liked bmw’s until I stumbled across this channel! Awesome content! Great detail….. and it’s made me like these cars! (But only the models on this channel)
a 1h:13m of entertainment and knowledgeable video ,looking forward to see the assembly and firing up the engine ,great video as always
Love it ! Love the detail ! Can’t wait for the reassembly !
I think you are a master of automotive technology and would be a great automotive teacher of the future. You are always calm and funny on top of that. And those are already reasons why we all love you and enjoy watching you so much. Thank you for being here, you are great! Best wishes to you.
YES YES YES my most favorite YT guy and favorite and best car ever made!
What a time to be alive, I love this man and his crazy ideas ahahha
Lucky to own one. Unreal pleasure from watching. Now I am mentally ready to repeat it, thank you!
i absolutly love your conent and what you do here , you go to in to details and everything that somebody would realy never do but keep it up and i hope that we see more episodes soon!
I love your Video quality at 60fps and the great light in your shop
E39 restorations= beer snacks and good times, FINALLY!!
Amazing! I really wish the boys at RetroPower would do the underside bodywork as their method is second to none in the world...
First time viewer, long time commenter. I watch too many UTube videos, somehow you manage to pull all the great editing, verbal banter, and skills to make some of the best. I thank you......
Thanks, looking forward for the next episodes!
Finally! This episode is like my belated Christmas present!
Thanks to Sreten for his very kind comments and for giving us the opportunity to be of service here. We love building all Alusil-based BMW motors (and the S54 too), but the S62 will always have a special place in my heart. Going to be a lot of fun to film some cool videos in the Partee Racing shop, and perhaps we will even be able to elicit a visit from nearby James Clay of Bimmerworld!
I haven’t got the faintest clue what is going on here but I’m fascinated. Watched a few hours now and don’t think I’ve learnt anything. Just amazing.
another great episode with really good editing. I am sure BMW mechs around the world watch 'em. I am also sure I would Never own one of these marvels without a guy like you with his own shop next door to me.
Those food carts are rly nice. Food grade equipment is good quality SS to prevent rust. 👍🏾
i have never seen a complex motor then this before.that vanos system looks like a swisswatch,s62 rocketscience
Can't wait to see the blast machine in action ! It will make miracles on this car !
Been waiting for this one! Can't wait to see it go back together. I'd love to see you do an M54 sometime - I don't think you've done a full nut-and-bolt disassembly and rebuild of an inline six on the channel yet, have you?
Anyway, you rock Sreten - all the best and happy new year!
Great vid... thank you for all the work to show such detail.
