The Columbus Metro Parks system is great. They’re like mini state parks or national forests in the middle of town.
As some one from the Columbus area if you have an interest in the civil war, Native American history, archeology, Ohio’s nature, geology, the 1950s ww1, Ohio sports, paleontology or just want to see a 2 headed calf come to the history center. They have a reconstructed 1890s village. If your into trains there’s the Ohio railway museum. The Orton museum of geology they have lots of fossils. The metro parks are cool. In Westerville there’s the Hanby house which was a station on the Underground Railroad and home to the man who wrote up on the house top. Nearby counties have flint ridge a really cool place for history and nature lovers. The Newark earthworks. The Sherman house. If your a civil war buff you can do a small road trip around central Ohio.

Fantastic to see my own city get some love! For the most part, I'd say if you are an outdoorsy person, don't skip out on the trails/parks. Columbus has maintained a fantastic system that is currently being expanded. The Olentangy Trail runs straight through campus to downtown and is beautiful. Take a look if you have the time!

Columbus is also home to many award winning breweries! My favorite is Crooked Can Brewing Co. in Old Hilliard. Great staff with knowledge of beer styles and above all: GREAT BEER.
Next time you’re in town don’t forget to go to Thurmans and try the Thurmanator, or Tensuke for authentic Japanese ramen and market, or Gressos! Also, thank you for correcting the pronunciation of COSI! I almost cried the first time 🤣
Just remember to get off parsons asap lol. Also Red Brick is also a really good place to eat. I tend to go there more than Thurmans, its like two streets down. Off Gates rd.

Seconding Thurman's. I'm a recent Columbus transplant and Thurman's is up there with the best in the country.
There are plenty of Michigan Fans that are born and raised in Columbus. Tickets for OSU games are expensive but tailgating and hanging out at nearby bars are fun! There’s a lot of energy on campus during games. The National Veterans Memorial is in Columbus. High Street in the Short North and Clintonville are worth a stroll. As someone who was raised in Columbus, but went to school in Athens at Ohio University... us Bobcats are very defensive when it comes to our school, and being confused with OSU- we may not be "THE" university... but we were THE FIRST university in the state! Where my Bobcats at??? lol ;-) (also, definitely visit Easton if you come to Columbus. been shopping and hanging out there since I was a teen. Lots of excellent food and shops. Def eat at Cooper's Hawk, if you visit!)

I've visited Columbus many times, but haven't since Covid. I love the cream puffs at Schmidt's Sausage Haus and the blueberry cake at Ichiban Bakery.

Spot on Mark. Harriet and I have friends from the Buckeye State. They live in Cleveland. In Columbus , college football is king. Locals are always friendly. Traffic and parking is crazy when the Buckeyes are playing in town. Great stuff Mark. 👍👍 Jim and Harriet
Something else is the parks that are scattered throughout the city are very well maintained and really worth visiting. Nice trails and things to see and do.
Agreed. Unlike some cities, Columbus didn’t bulldoze all forests. There’s actually quite a few even that are still not part of any park. You’ll see random forests scattered about, especially on the north side.
Hi from a Columbus area native. This video is a great intro to the city. It really is a place more tourists should vist as a hidden gem. The zoo,cosi, metro parks (one has bison), German village, campus area, and Easton can all be full days worth of entertainment. So catch a game or a concert and make it an absolutely amazing weekend.
As for crime the only real issue that a normal traveler might deal with is car break in's if you leave a purse in easy eye sight. We're actually an extremely safe city.
LMAO! I grew up in Upper Arlington (UAHS Class of '75 - GO BEARS!) and my dad was a professor at THE Ohio State University, so we had faculty seats to all the home games - GO BUCS!..You absolutely nailed the craziness of Columbus. Thanks for the love!
Don’t forget to visit the other suburban areas like Old Dublin, Old Worthington, and Uptown Westerville! Lots of history and amazing food without the crime rate or parking issues.

The only problem with Columbus is the serious lack of a good public transportation system. However, I could also say that in general when it comes to travel in the United States, setting aside NYC, and the BART system in California. I really wish Columbus will have a Subway and light rail service in the outer belt communities someday, such as Toronto has. Wow that would make the city a great one indeed! Public transportation hub links to Cleveland/Cincinnati have been discussed for years. With a possible Indianapolis/Chicago link in addition to Pittsburgh, the entire Midwest and Eastern Seaboard could be easily linked and this would be quite an asset. All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL
The I-270 outerbelt be having a lot of out of towners tripping.😂 i thought all cities had an interstate that circles the city🤷 i guess not.
The good thing is Columbus has tons of land to build on.
You don’t want to use the BART system in San Fransisco. I live in North Bay currently and grew up in Northern CA. It used to be decent.

Loving this series Mark. You should do a list sometime of alternative cities to major famous cities. It’s way too easy to keep returning to same cities when we goto America especially as they usually are so engrained into pop culture. I love this series learning about less obvious cities

We went to Columbus on vacation, from Rochester NY, a 7 hour drive, to see the Zoo, and COSI...

Battelle Darby Creek is technically just outside the city but it is amazing and it has a population of bison. You should also check out franklinton, clintonville, beechwood, and the old north along high street for great cafes, food, bars, and shows. There's also lots of cars shows, expos, and fairs around town like the Irish Festival in Dublin (I know it's technically not Columbus), the Italian Festival, and of course the Ohio State Fair.
I agree, Battelle Darby Creek is the best park! Everyone should be sure to stop by Tony's Coneys on W. Broad St. to get some coneys and fries on the way to the park.

I started watching your channel while preparing for my study abroad through OSU… four years later it’s great to see you come check out my university and the city! Pretty solid overview :)
Definitely go to Bridge Park in Dublin, it’s a beautiful area great to walk around the river, the library is very nice, and lots of restaurants. It’s also very safe! Park your car in the free parking garages and then explore area by walking!
Columbus Native, I really enjoyed the video! Don’t forget about the great festivals we have from around May to October. Nice plays and shows that happen throughout the year. The Scioto Mile downtown is beautiful, especially at night. Bridgepark in Dublin is a new up & coming area with a lot of cool restaurants. Otherworld is also a really cool hidden gem on the East Side. Great shopping options as well. Really great place to live & visit! (Don’t move here though rent is becoming TOO expensive lol)

“Melt” is grilled cheese paradise and the location off of High Street is the best. I’ve driven down from Cleveland just to eat lunch.
We have or had a Melt in Cleveland too in independence.

The quirkiest and most fun parade ever is the Doo Dah Parade on the 4th of July.
For ice cream instead of Jeni's I recommend trying Whit's frozen custard. It's a ice cream chain originally from the area. They are quite common in the suburbs of Columbus and typically have small locations. Whit's has expanded out of state and I believe it can be found in 9 other states. If you ever see one I really recommend trying it's very good. The place runs really interestingly. It has chocolate and vanilla available always, and a flavor of the week that can be seen on the schedule inside. You can also buy cartons for all the other flavors as well.

I went to Columbus for a weekend to watch an NHL game a few years ago (my team beat the Blue Jackets). A lot of friends thought Columbus would be boring, but there was lots to do and we had a great time (we stayed in the German Village). I'd definitely go back.
my parents were born in marion a small town 50 miles north of Columbus. a very doable day trip. home of warren g harding. and also popcorn festival.

I'm just going to mention The Franklin Park Conservatory + Botanical gardens has a FREE admission the first sunday of every month, So for those who want to save money go on the free day because the price normally is a bit expensive including activities, gift shops, and food. Just save money by planning to go on the first sunday of the month.

My family is almost all Michigan alum, me and my grandma went to columbus for The Game and people threw rocks at us and almost damages her nerves and blinded her, I really hate Ohio but now I have personal hatrid

I am from San Diego and I live there for about 10 years and I got spoiled with the exquisite food , museums, art galleries , and gallery hop. I was so glad to come back to San Diego but then I missed a lot of what Columbus had. San Diego has its own kind of culture for sure and I love it and I am a San Diegan but Columbus has a Lot of culture too. They have festivals all kinds of fun things to do. Victorian Village German Village there are parks places to take your kids fishing creeks to get into. I don’t want to go back to live there but I’d love to go back and visit. The Columbus Museum I think that’s the name of it yes famous works of art they brought tears to my eyes I couldn’t believe I was standing in front of such famous impressionist art.
Columbus is not the 15th largest Metro area (32nd), but is the 14th largest in city population in the US.
The Buckeyes cant beat either the bengals or browns.They may be one of the best in college football but would get thrashed by any pro team. Also red yellow and blue are the primary colors.

We moved to Columbus from Cincinnati in October of 2021. Columbus is fine, but Cincinnati has a lot more going for it…and a lot less crime. Lots of good breweries in Columbus too, but Cincy is the beer queen of Ohio.
What area in Cincy is as large as short north or German village?

I visited Columbus last year and had an amazing time. The thing that got me was the obvious division in class easily observed on high north street. I mean higher class walking through the homeless like they were ghost. Nobody was rude or threatening just a bit of culture shock I suppose. I am considering moving to Columbus I loved it and for many reasons I feel it would be a good fit for me.
I'm not so sure about the blue and yellow thing. I live in Columbus and work at OSU. I have a lot of blue in my wardrobe and have a few blue and yellow (not sporty) outfits. In the 22 years I've lived here I've never had anyone say a word to me about the colors of my clothing. They might say something if you wear blue and yellow to an OSU game but nobody will give you any trouble if you're wearing the colors in normal corporate casual wear.
You can wear blue and red, Blue Jackets colors, definitely acceptable in Columbus
Just outside of Columbus in Pickerington is the American Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. And A.D. Farrow is the oldest Harley dealership. At 10.35 the statue of Christopher Columbus is no longer there. Some folks thought it was politically incorrect and the city took it down

If you like airplanes, it just an hour+ drive down to Dayton and the National Museum of the US Air Force, it's fantastic!

I moved up from Cincinnati last year and the biggest problem is that everything is soooooo spread out. They are really working on building density in the city center, but it is still probably 20 years away from feeling like a real city. I could put together a great weekend trip in Cincinnati in a 5 mile radius of downtown, much of it walkable or along the streetcar line. In Columbus? No chance.
Columbus is very livable, but not at all tourist friendly in that regard. Comparably sized cities such as Pittsburgh, Portland, Nashville, or Cincinnati are miles ahead.
i agree. public transit is terrible here, not necessarily light rail but COTA is terrible. no public transit after 10pm and only stopping every hour at smaller stops is pretty bad

@@rahimi4762 what's your point? I was talking about density. Downtown Columbus is so spread out and littered with surface parking lots that it makes the city feel closer to Louisville in size than Cincinnati.

Seems like a really nice city, but I'm not sure I'd fit in (I don't follow amateur football). I do want to get to a Blue Jackets game and the zoo. And I'm not sure I'd call Ohio State (oops, "the") the best football team in the state... maybe the most successful at each team's respective levels. Even the worst pro team would demolish the best college team. Even the Browns.

@@ML-ul2zq Who is "we?" All the "we's" I know say it when referring to the school. (Generally don't when referring to OSU athletic teams.) And rightly so, as The is part of the university's actual name. Look it up! I went there for undergrad, and my diploma says The Ohio State University.
@@ML-ul2zq I constantly hear "the" while watching sports. When the Bengals introduced themselves before the Super Bowl, one guy said "Ohio State" and one did say "the Ohio State". A Rams player said "the Oregon State University". I do enjoy when players from other schools mock Ohio State like that.
