Sir Tony, thank you so much for this feature. Toowoomba is my nearest city and I love how you’ve honoured our veterans and the military background. Greg Lamerton was my Modern History teacher in 1991 and I hadn’t seen him since, until I watched this. I remember the to do over moving the Mothers Memorial - yes it was said it was due to the traffic. However, considering it was replaced by centre parking, it created a lot of discord and a sense of betrayal.
My grandfather’s brother was a Lighthorseman, although in the 12th. He was in Sqn B at Beersheba and was one of the first into the town. Yes he was one who did say goodbye to his steadfast mate before he came home. 😢
One big detail that was missed is that the 25th Bn had a VC awarded in the Battle of Milne Bay. Cpl John Alexander “Jack” French was a Crows Nest hairdresser who volunteered and, during the battle, silenced three nests of machine gunners, losing his life in the process and dying at the edge of the third pit. His VC was awarded posthumously. I have a photo of me holding that VC - my mother worked with Jack’s sister on the local phone exchange.

Hi Tony, keep doing these history pieces. I’m learning about my country at 68 years, stuff I should have learnt in School. Keep up the good work, thanks from an Australian.

The cyanide gauzes were for use as antiseptic dressings and contained gauze charged with the 'double cyanide' of mercury and zinc. They didn't actually contain cyanide. Its just that mercury and zinc were referred to as a double cyanide.

Lee Walters was unable to start an airline due to financial backing. He was unable to pursue a career in the airline industry due to trade unions not recognising military qualifications. And I very much doubt he was ever told that he was not permitted to March on Anzac day.

the Mother's memorials was on the western side of the intersection where the pine tree now stands. not in the center as depicted.

I wonder when they'll be forming a reenactment group of the soldiers that dug the community toilets, the heroes that constantly went to and from the condensers on the beach at ANZAC returning ( if they weren't sniped) with water for the men in the dugouts. Will there be a group soon about the sappers who were constantly under fire , running communication wires to the batteries and forward HQs at Quinn's ? Will there be a group for the drivers who rode the horses while dragging the 18 pounders and howitzers ,again while under fire or are only the Light Horse important? Probably more likely that these people, who are really just another version of the liars that still come to light occasionally in RSL's wearing medals they weren't entitled to and even inventing entire phoney lives will only ever commemorate the battles they consider important. Grow up. I've got six close relatives including my grandfather who were actually there. Stop trying to steal their bravery . Incidentally, my father Bevan Waters was named after the Military Medal recipient. My grandfather witnessed this remarkable feat of bravery and named his sons after the surnames of three men he admired .
