Wiles had a side hussle during Covid propagandising for the Govt. So her safety during this was the University's responsibility? She was also speaking outside her discipline. There were far more qualified people, but they were at odds with the narrative the Govt was pushing. Wiles can speak as a citizen but not on behalf of the University, but now the Uni has to foot the bill for her protection because of her moonlighting and 15 mins of fame?

The underlying problem with Siouxsie Wiles presenting herself as a pandemic response and vaccine expert is that she is neither of these! Not. An. Expert. Now from what I can see of her *actual* research she is smart...but (channelling 'Zero Dark 30': a lot of us are smart...but she just parroted the govt's massaging and that made many of us (particularly those that examined the ongoing overseas research that was pointing to a changing of all these things) really frustrated.
I do not support the personal attacks and threats that were directed at her - but I *do* support the criticisms and also the exposure of hypocrisy re 'paddle-gate'. It does seem to me that she is melding these things together.
Re the actual court case, it seems to me that she clearly stepped outside her area of expertise for which she was employed by the university. Now while I think people should be allowed (or even encouraged to some extent) to do this - *but* this should be clearly stated (wearing a white lab coat while presenting views outside your expertise is deceptive for instance) and I do not see how the university should be held responsible for any alleged safety concerns.

Dr wiles had a history of self-aggrandizing long before COVID, pretending to be an expert in all sorts of fields of science in which she has no training. During COVID she chose to pretend to know about virology, epidemiology and public health to get attention for herself. If she doesn't like some of the attention she got, perhaps she will stick to her own field of expertise in future. We can only hope so anyway.

Her duplicity is appalling and the case against the university questionable. At the very least, as a scientist Wiles must have been aware that the government message did not have scientific consensus and yet she had no qualms in being a party to the “one source of truth” nonsense or demonising those who had valid objections as her heightened profile came with benefits. She could take all the bouquets but squealed at the merest brickbat and is now after further benefits for portraying herself as a victim.

Here's the thing: Wiles didn't just give the public information, she gave advice, based in part on information ("facts"), but also based on subjective assessment of those "facts". This advice likely also includes her own personal biases and the government agenda which she was encouraged to support (by the government).
If the government really did "recruit" her to push their agenda, then they should be responsible for protecting her from the consequences. Suppose that I worked on a building site and the secret service recruited me to infiltrate a terror ring that was operating on that site. Who should protect me? The building site company or the secret service? Clearly the latter, I would think!
If however, Wiles gave all the covid advice purely as part of her job at the University, without significant government influence, then Wiles has a case IF she kept strictly to the facts (or kept sufficiently close to the facts). But she didn't! She gave advice that seemed to be based on a worst case scenario for covid. This advice put many people at a disadvantage, but it probably suited Wiles to work at home, on full pay, during lockdowns! It may have also fed her own sense of self-importance, being suddenly so relevant and widely quoted in the press. This is what I mean by personal bias.
It might be argued that Wiles was using the University as a vehicle to promote herself and push subjective opinions that suited her personally. If this is true, then I suggest that the University owes Wiles nothing but a termination of employment letter!
The case should examine whether Wiles kept sufficiently close to the facts when giving advice about the pandemic and whether or not it was justifiable for her to base that advice on the worst case scenario. If she was really acting as a puppet for the government, then they should be held responsible, not the University of Auckland.

Looking at both sides of the story it is a very complex case. Was she working for the government but also within her Auckland University remit? She actually has a legit case. We should not judge her because of her weight or her hair - forget about that and be better - judge her on what she told us during the pandemic. Was it science based or paid government propaganda?? if her position with covid and the government had nothing to do with the university and wasn't part of her employment with said university, she doesn't have a case for them to protect her in the work place, as it was her actions that put her on that position, and her sole responsibility to keep her business out of the work place, the same as if i had an argument with my wife at home , and she then came to my work place and hit me, its not my employer responsibility to protect me its my responsibility.
