Javier Mercedes well, I have been using the H4N. But, I just threw it in the bin!!! - I actually use that for sound design out in the field. I guess I will have to keep it for a while. I plug a Blue Yeti and a pop filter into my MacBook currently. Please don’t do a review on USB mics. You will probably have me tossing that in the can as well. 😏👂🏼🎤🎧🎼
I have a zoom H6, Yamaha mg12xu mixer, and 2 SM58’s for me and my co host. I run the mics to the Yamaha mixer and then stereo out to record to the Zoom H6 and usb to record to the computer(Movavi). I use the zoom audio for our podcasts and the computer audio is a backup. Like you always say, backups are soooo important! I lost 1 show and ever since then I’ve always had a backup
Noise floor is higher on H4. Love the F8 as advanced limiting and automix features. Helps get a solid LR mix right out of the box and speed up workflow. Worth the extra money for those features.
Great video!! There is a newer H4n Pro that I think has the same preamps as the H6... Curious to see if you have tried it. As far as the hiss on the H4n (and even the H6): try them with a cloudlifter CL-1 connected to the mic, so you can get more clean gain from the mic before hitting the preamps. It will allow you to not having to crank the gain on the preamp and bringing in all the unwanted noise that you get when you run the preamps hot. You should be able to have a good recording level at around 5. Thanks for the comparison! Impressed about the SM58's performance. Cheers!
Jordi Sanchis-Sanchez Thank you for taking the time to write that! I just now have found out about the cloudlifter from my rep at Sweetwater. It sounds like just the right tool to alleviate the hiss. Since doing this trial I would like to compare them again after adding EQ to see where you can push the mics to the limit in coloring the sound how you need it. In terms of the SM7B I have had a complete eye opener on how much you can boost the low end and compress it to get some crazy amazing “radio voice” sound. Where as my 50$ dynamic mic (not the sm58) is eons away from matching when pushed in the EQ towards and frequency.
Glad you know about the CL-1! It would very cool if you got to do a video showing your signal chain in your DAW and showing how you push the EQ/Comp and how mics differ from one another through it. Thanks for the reply! Happy podcasting!
Jesus Christ! Am I reading wrong!? 1.8k subs? You deserve at least 2 mil with this type of content! Awesome video brother you edit really good. This test helped me alot!! :)
Hey Javier, great content. Cloudlifter and new Pro models of the Handy Recorders aside, I feel the SM7B is like a needy girlfriend. Always wanting more. Most of these devices create some hiss with this mic until it's signal is boosted. Even in your clip from the interview, your guest SM7B mic had hiss. On the other hand mics like the SM57/58 are less needy and sound great with this setup. For return on investment the SM7B seems out of reach for most up and coming podcasters. Would you say a brand name, dynamic microphone and a H4 would do the job? After doing this yourself, what would you recommend to aspiring podcasters?
When you add in the cost of multiple cloudlifters/fethead style preamps to the H6 you've in essence bought the F8 which comes with about 71db of gain built in and 8 inputs! So from a practical point of view it's financially silly to use an SM7b on such a setup with the H6. There is the Klark Teknik for a lot less (actually about 1/5 the cost of the cloudlifter) and THAT would make more sense. Otherwise a straight up F4, F6 or F8 and no added dongles needed.
Thank you for a lovely review. I don't know if I am comparing apples with oranges, but the input gain of the ZOOM H4n is 32 dB, both the ZOOM H5 and the ZOOM H6 has 55.5 dB of gain. The sensitivity of the SHURE SM58 is -54,5 dB/V while the SHURE SM7B is -59 dB/V. As a consequense the ZOOM H4N is unable to supply enough gain. I use the SHURE SM7B and SM57 with the ZOOM H5 together with a Fethead microphone preamp which delivers additional 27 dB gain and is very pleased with the result :)
@@JavierMercedes Julian Krause has made an interesting video about whether or not you need a preamp as the Fethead or the Cloudlifter. Connected to different types equipment the microphone preamps are able to lower or raise the level of noise. The Fethead delivers additional 27 dB gain as the Cloudlifter delivers 25 dB gain. According to Krauses measurements the Fethead delivers 33 dB of gain in combination with the ZOOM H5. Both the Zoom H5 and H6 has an EIN or mic input noise of -120,5 dBu. As a consequense the Fethead lowers the noise by 10 dB, as the Fethead has an EIN of -130 dBu. Connected to an Audient ID14 audio interface with a mic EIN of -127 dBu the Fethead lowers the noise by 3 dB. I went for the Fethead by TritonAudio because it is more accessible within the EU and costs a 1/3 of the Cloudlifter (within EU). But otherwise the two mic preamps should be fairly similar 😊
Hi Javier, thanks for d fab video, would I use a fethead mike booster on my sm7b to go into my HN4?, thank u in advance for any help on this.just read your reply on a different post about cloudlifter, so I guess that answers my question.thanks.
Great, insightful video. Thanks! Already got the H6, and just running with Wireless Go + Røde Go Lavalier. Might try the SM7B some time, but for video the lavaliers are so handy. Especially on the go and on location.
This is probably the dumbest question I could be asking but whenever I hook up my Shure to my Zoom H4N Pro and hit record, I hear a very low and persistent background noise. Is there any way to just get rid of that while recoding or do I have to do that in post? I have one of the limiter settings enabled which helps some but not completely.

Javier - thanks for the video. For a video recording project I woke up thinking about at 3am, I was curious about audio and was hoping you'd have a video just like this!! Question from a total beginner: Why do you need the Shure SM 58 AND the Handy Zoom field recorder? (why use a mic and a recorder) I have an SM58 for live music shows in my past, and figured I could just plug it into the computer with some adapter and software - but this universally seems like the right approach. Thanks in advance.
the adapter you are referring to is an audio interface, the handy zoom recorder will allow you to go from the the mic to the computer because it is an audio interface, but it also is a field recorder. So you can record without the use of a computer. In my experience, field recorders are much more reliable when doing long form recordings because they only have one task, record audio. Computers are built to do a plethora of things so the chances that a program freezes, monitor goes to sleep, or any of the other things that could go wrong have a higher potential of happening. A zoom recorder is also a much smaller foot print. Laptops aren't too much of an inconvenience but you will start to find out that if you travel with your setup a lot they become a nuisance get in the way sometimes. There are special mics that you can buy that are like the sm58, have both the xlr and usb connections, that alleviate the audio interface issue altogether. Like the Audio-Technica Consumer ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB Microphone
I have a Zoom recorder and ma looking to get a new mic for YT viseos. I want it to pick up less echo but I also need it to pick up my voice to up to 2 meters away for when standing in front of my green screen. Would the Sm58 do or do you recommend another microphone? Thx.
Hi Javier, thank you for the great videos and content you produce the videos are really helpful. I have a question, how to do setup the Zoom H6 when recording two or three vocals for a podcast. My biggest problem is that I end up having a lot of post work.... I need to edit three tracks of vocals and I need to cut out the not talking individuals because otherwise the talking individual sound like there is a tone of Eco in the room. Is there perhaps a method I'm not using on the Zoom H6? Thank you.
You may want to look into utilizing a "Gate" when editing in post. This tells the software to "turn off" the channel when the audio in that specific channel is below a certain dB threshold. I utilize that and noise reduction in post to help speed up my post editing. I use Premiere pro to edit but the concepts of the plugins I am using in this video may translate to the NLE you use: th-cam.com/video/TAGM17Zwn3I/w-d-xo.html

The only thing I stress about USB mics is that they go into a computer, and computers do a lot of things while a field recorder is dedicated to one thing only, recording sound. If you are going into a situation where you are recording on a computer YOU HAVE TO RUN A BACKUP, please - nothing will happen for 1 out of 100 recordings but that 1 will get you, and it's the worst feeling ever if you don't have something at the end of the day. Even if it's setting a phone in the room on a voice memo for the duration of the podcast. I told the story earlier on my channel about how I was recording John Cena's episode on theCHIVE podcast and the SD card got corrupted, luckily I was running a stereo feed back up into an h4n that saved my A** from probably getting fired on the spot.

Hey, cheers a lot, what a great video! I'm currently using a Steinberg UR22 which is limited to two inputs, that's why I want to either upgrade to a UR44, 18i8, H6, or UMC404HD. Really hard choice. The Behringer UMC404HD is just crazy cheap, a third of the price of the other three alternatives. I travel around my country with all of my equipment to record interview partners in person, that's why portability is quite important. The UMC404HD and UR44 seem rather large, the 18i8 is about the same size as my current UR22 but the H6 is just so beautifully small. Additionally, I could also record without my iPad (on the run, directly into the SD card.) That being said, the H6 is also the most expensive. Do you have any experience with actual audio interfaces as those mentioned above, and if so, how do they compare to the H6 in your opinion? There's a video up that compares a focusrite with the H6 and the H6 sounds better for voice imho. But is it worth paying 306 Euro for an H6 when the UMC404HD only costs 106 Euro? Tough call. The 18i8/UR44 are about 10-20 Euro cheaper than the H6, so not a big difference there. URGH. What do you think? :) PS: I'm currently using two cheap Samson Q2Us and a Rode NTG-2.
I don’t have experience with the behringers you just mentioned but my advice would be if you plan on doing this for a very long time I would go with the H6 because it will last you and the portability of it will make your life easier compounded over time. That said if this is more of a hobby and you just need to get another interface than go with the other options, but I have been using an h6 for more than 5 years now and it has more than paid for itself in convenience. Hope that helps Birken.
Personally I’ve used the the presonus studio live 16 channel, zoom h6, and mbox2 pro. All of these you have to run the knobs very high to get the levels you need. That being said many here keep mentioning the cloud lifter that you can add in the signal chain that adds I think +25db. Each mixer/interface sounds about the same to me, maybe other could chime in with a better answer.
I wasn't aware of the cloud lifter when I recorded this, but I now know about them. Thanks for watching Tarun, I hope it was still a helpful comparison.
Mike Johnson hahah, I’m fairly certain your mics are a pretty penny higher in price than the ones featured here. And the episode at your place sounded amazing, I wouldn’t change a thing :)
I'm considering getting a pair of SM7B's for my live streams on YT (And other endeavors lol). I've got two cheap mics to hold me over till I'm 100% sure since they're so expensive. The SM58 is only a 100 bucks though and I've used it at a lot. lol I don't know. So many choices!
The only thing I would caution you on the SM7B is the footprint. The mic is big so it is heavy and takes up real estate in your frame, so placing it can get tricky. I would stick with the SM58 for live streams or the mics you have. Justin Odisho just recently bought his and that wasn’t until he was at like 500k subs.
Javier Mercedes i know zoom products are awesome i already own an H1 and U-22, same problem...the stupid hiss, for higher stuff like H5 or H6 they r just out f my budget so i think m stuck wth wht i hv and rely heavily on post processing whr i lose a lot f quality just removing tht noise, sad but true. Thanks fr ur help though!
Hi Javier. Thanks for this video. Do you think I should order this new Zoom product coming out or get the Zoom H5 or H6 instead? Here's a link to the upcoming Zoom Podtrak 4 device: zoomcorp.com/en/us/podtrak-recorders/podcast-recorders/podtrak-p4/
since h6 is too much expensive for me and i really don't need it's options and i just need it's good amps do you think h5 can get the job done with sm7b?do you think amps are as good as h6?
I haven't used the h5 before so I wouldn't be able to gauge how it would sound, but I did this test before knowing about a piece of equipment called the cloud lifter, It raises the volume of the sm7b before it gets to your audio recorder, thus alleviating the challenge that would come from lots of noise getting into the signal. Here is an affiliate link, sounds like the solution: amzn.to/2SyAmSO
@@JavierMercedes thanks for the response , sm58 is good but since i need an all around mic for vocals guitar podcast sm7b is a safer choice! cloud lifter is aa good solution but price would be more than h6 then! you think h5 + cloud lifter is the best choice (sound quality wise)for someone who doesn't need 4 inputs or i'm better with h6 and it has enough gain to run sm7b without cloudlifter?
an alien undercover hmmm again I haven’t used the h5 so I don’t know if it uses the same preamps as the h6, all I would say is that in terms outboard audio gear, it has way more longevity than other technology, so investing in a piece of gear that will last you helps. If you plan on using this kind of thing a lot than I would for sure go with the h6, because it will come in handy in the future if you ever need it for different situations, if you know that you are going to specifically be recording things in a two channel situation than I would for sure go the h5 route.
What gear do you like to record with? Links to all the audio products in my description if you are curious.

What mic stand is that?
No Cloudlifter?
I wasn't aware of the cloud lifter when I recorded this, but I now know about them. Thanks for watching Tarun, I hope it was still a helpful comparison.
Very helpful brotha! Thank you so much
Thx for microphone test
Thanks for watching!
great video thank you
Awesome thanks for watching and commenting!
Now I need new MICS DAM YOU JAVIER!!!!!! Lol...Really dope!!!!
Mike Johnson hahah, I’m fairly certain your mics are a pretty penny higher in price than the ones featured here. And the episode at your place sounded amazing, I wouldn’t change a thing :)
Nice one
How will I make s
I think the preamps could be better
The hiss on the h4n on high gain levels wth a dynamic are insane, thanks to this video i m not buying it now!!
Glad I could inform, Zoom makes great products though for the price, they do have other options that would probably suit your needs Agam.
Also the SM58 makes for a good mike too, honestly if you are podcasting it would do the job well.
I dont understand poeple using sm7b in poscasts for poor voices, no singers, no music, sm58 level is perfect for talking.
