      Thank you! It means a lot! In the end if I was doing it just for myself, I might've just played all these through DOSBox (DFend) at home and not share any of my thoughts. Also, as we went from 1988 to 1997 I actually discovered some games too. Which is always fun, cause you never know when I'll hit a jackpot and will just be able to play games all day long and record videos and not go to "work". xD

      @@Zazuzozu Well, it'll be same as always... Some odd PC/Amiga videos here and there, 10 years of series for C64/Genesis/Early Windows and whatever I think of in-between. The obscure series for Amiga that I started I kinda enjoy and there's tons of little known games for DOS too, that could use some love. Even years after they released originally.

    Might be wrong but TopWare was more publisher than developer company, based in Germany not Poland. Earth 2140 was indeed developed by Poles (most notably Mirosław Dymek who developed also Polanie and it sequel Knightshift, Earth and Two Worlds series). Game itself was quite advanced as for 2d rts, allowed higher resolution than other rts, used some transperency effects also no so common then, had decent units pathfinding even before A* algorithm widespread and smart enemy A.I. (sadly dumbed down in GoG Hd version)

    When all these put together, 1997 doesn't seem that bad in terms of DOS gaming. Also I'd like to point out NovaLogic and their sims, those guys were really my saviors (me as a fan of sims) back in the late 90s when I had to stick to DOS games due to my old machine: their graphically sophisticated Comanche 3, F22 Lightning 2 and Armored Fist 2 still supported DOS and ran quite smoothly on my early Pentium without a 3D-accelerator.

    Great Compilation! Fallout and GTA i played the most that year and damn man you have to play Darksouls 3 or Elden Ring at least, you're really missing out on great Level Design, amazing and unparalleled Enemy and Weapon Designs, crazy engaging Boss Battles, unmatched control over your character and i must disagree with you, Souls games are the MOST rewarding games i played in the last decade, you will scream in frustration when you die over and over again on a Boss, but when you finally overcome it and finally kick it's ass, the feeling of reward is like no other game out there.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sorta low key eyeing Elden Ring but since historically I always sucked at souls games, I'm waiting for a deep discount before I pull the trigger. I understand the feeling of failing time after time to finally beat the challenge and get that endorfin shot from it, but I used to get it from original and those newer XCom games especially. So yeah, I may try ER one day.

    It always fascinates me how quickly the gaming medium progressed in the 90's and how far some devs lagged behind. Dungeon crawlers that look not much better than Eye of the Beholder coming out in the same year as Dungeon Keeper and Fallout.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny enough exactly the same thing happens today. Take a look at Baldur's Gate 3 how much this game offers in terms of content and quality... And what was the reaction of most well known and biggest devs? They stated that this is an anomaly and we shouldn't expect games of this scope from them...

      I've in another video, one of the later Essential 199X series. I did omit quite a few titles in fact when I was making those original DOS series, because I was straight up dumb back then and would set series of artificial rules on how these videos were supposed to look like, and they were just silly and limited me in terms of both creativity and number of games. I make better videos now, not as good as I'd like them to be, but much better than before, and I don't have no rules on how my current "10 Years of Early Windows Games" series run. Lots of great games.
    I was going to say that you did forget a few games from the last few videos. Let's see:
    First I remembered Total Annihilation from 1997! It was the first RTS with a real 3D engine (projectiles would fall down and hit terrain!) As a bonus curiosity, it was actually programmed by Ron Gilbert, of Monkey Island fame. Then I actually checked and it is a Windows only game. I was sure it was DOS as well given the release date!
    Then I also remembered The Neverhood from Douglas TenNapel from 1996. However, apparently, it was also Windows only! Kind of weird, but I guess it makes sense, it always had that early Direct X jank with the High Color/True Color thing of blinking into the wrong colors and all that.
    Then another one that then I saw that was missing was: Theme Hospital! This one was a total gem by Bullfrog and was indeed released in 1997 for DOS.
    It is kind of sad that these games aren't in this list, in the end. I know it makes sense and I think I wouldn't take it any other way, but people playing Windows games back then were 100% also playing DOS games.
    Anyway,
    Amazing, good job, keep it up. I don't comment on all videos but I've been loving your Obscure Amiga Games series as well.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot! Obscure series will be continuing as Amiga had so many of these, especially in the PD libraries that it would be silly not to just carry on. They don't get the views but they're kinda like that Fallout video of mine, partly for me too. Not just the potential viewers. :)
      Regarding DOS games, you've hit the nail. These couldn't end up in this video but I am planning for a Windows version of the series too. Initially it was suppose to be 1993-2002 to cover that original retro period but given that Windows gaming is not going anywhere I may make it a two parter and do 2003-2012 as well in time.

    When you reuploded the 1996 video after this one I got quite confused. My brain’s been mush for the last few days so I wasn’t sure you uploaded this one or if I’d seen the ‘96 one? 😄
    Regarding ActionSuper cross that’s a lovely memory & I’m sure your friend would be glad you have a happy memory of them.
    Blast chamber looks like one to check out? Same with Terrafire?
    Blood is so much fun but you do need to save-scum it at times to get through.
    Carmageddon is so much fun. You do need to turn blood back on for some versions because if you play a where you kill people you’ll definitely become a serial killer. Definitely.
    Forgetting Duke Nukem 3D is a crime against gaming & the police will be around shortly. 😄
    You’re right, the sheer depth of Dungeon Keeper catches you out for what looks on the surface like an ordinary management sim.
    Ecstatica 1 & 2 are really underrated because they don’t look like games of their day but they are awesome.
    Honestly I really didn’t enjoy GTA until the series went 3D but I get that’s largely me.
    Love MDK (&MDK 2) as they’re games my GF & me plaid when we got together but also because they’re just great games for their time. Same with Oddworld, my partner & me had great fun figuring out the game together.
    Honestly Redneck Rampage is well presented but a lot of the levels are too big for the sake of being big & it can be fatiguing but I do understand why you like it.
    My GF & me loved the movie The City of Lost Children & loved the game for exactly that reason. Ron Perlman didn’t speak a word of French at the time the movie was being filmed so had to learn his line phonetically.
    I hated the movie Waterworld so I’m glad the game sucked. 😄
    Another fun video, thanks. You made a small spelling error for Little Big Adventure 2’s title but I agree it’s a great game. Don’t beat yourself up about it, you had a lot to cover surprisingly given it was 1997. Well done covering so many games!

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The earlier video was a re-upload as there were some small issues in it, like a game card centered for Dark Forces rather than on the side as for all the other games. Not a biggie but something worth fixing over time.
      A friend of mine, I played Elastomania with, died when I was abroad for 8 years. So, I didn't even learned about it until I came back years later. He was a good dude, and never thought of himself as better than other which I have a lot of respect for. He is missed but such is life unfortunately.
      While Carmageddon was amazing, I spent most time playing the C2. It was bigger, had more power ups and generally felt like a better game. To me at least, cause majority of people afaik preferred the first one.
      Oddworld, I'm not changing my mind about any time soon but MDK games were both fine indeed. And I enjoyed the genre mixe they offered as compared to what was most popular on the gaming scene back then.
      I get the sentiment about GTA. When it was in 2D, whatever anyone (myself included) wanna say about it, and how much there is to praise, it only gained when it moved to 3D. Not only aesthetically but in terms of variety and depth of quests especially. It just was a better game in 3D, more immersive, more fun... BETTER.
      Ron Perlman is a legend that sadly was type casted because of his physique. And I'm convinced that his acting chops would easily allow him to play a wider range of roles. I mean, his intro reading for Fallout games is proof enough that he could pull off dramatic roles easily. If only given a chance that is.
      Oh, and as per usual, thanks for watching! The 1997 was a surprise for me too, I knew there were some AAA games released for DOS but I never suspected so many great titles before I started working on the video.

It's more fun, puzzles are more varied, stages too, mechanics are much deeper and the pixel graphics aged better than the pre-rendered ones of Oddworld. And it's an older game. And I love Benefactor. Next platforms I will be giving the same treatment will be C64, Sega Genesis/Megadrive and Windows 1993-2002. I no particular order. If you're interested, make sure to come back. And if you think other systems deserve similar series, let me know, I'm open to all ideas that would not put this channel at risk. :)

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Oh man, C64 would be a challenge and a half! But you killed it with the Amiga so I'm sure you could make it great!

      @@theuglycamel8122 I've made a games list for 1982 - 1985 already. 1982 was a piece of cake. It was a year the Commodore released the magnificent machine so, not many games, and my extension of that not as many great ones. But 1983 and up, it's mind numbing amounts of games. But it's OK, it'll be fun to seek out hidden gems and talk about those I remember. And first time I ever dreamt of a game, was when I had my C64, it was Batman the movie and my parents at the time figured out that I must've gotten a "computer disease" whatever they may have in mind and didn't let me play my C64 for a week... It was nightmare! Oh, and yeah, I've written it really badly. They were not my parents at the time. As far as I know they are to this day. Although they were at the time too, so arguably it's also correct. But my point is, it was "at the time" when they, my parents, without any medical background whatsoever diagnosed me with an illness that did not exist. Good times. ;)
