    As a person who has managed their own investments for 30 years, I have to say you deliver the most coherent, logically presented, and factual information I have ever had the privilege to watch. Please keep up the good work! This stuff should be mandatory in "retirement school". I know, there isn't one, but there should be. If I were teaching in that class, the first thing I would cover is what "fiduciary" means, and why you should run, not walk, away from anybody behind a desk in a bank. Oh, and pay for advice, not for someone to "invest" for you.

  • @CanuckJim
    @CanuckJim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    What I love about your "style" is it feels like a conversation with someone who knows a topic well. Financial advisors at banks drive me mad. Some treat you like a child ("Now, this is a REGISTERED account. Registered means the GOVT controls ...") in a condescending way while others, well, don't seem to know what they're talking about. I really dread talking to them - so frustrating I'd rather just deal with a website. But your "here's this neat feature - let me tell you about it" is so much better.

    Thanks Adam,
    Let me try to summarize (Correct me if I am wrong):
    LIRA: (come from a Pension) (Locked In Registered Account)
    1) You can invest in same types of investments as RRSP.
    2) RRSP --> RRIF (After 71 years old)
    LIRA --> LIF (After 55 years old)
    RRSP --> withdrawals--> no Min, no Max
    RRIF --> withdrawals--> Min, but no Max
    LIF --> withdrawals--> Min & Max
    3) Unlocking:
    (55 years or older unlock LIRA -->LIF)
    Ontario:
    50% --> can be transferred -->RRSP
    50% --> have to be stay locked in LIF
    a) Tip 1: unlock the maximum of LIRA--> and transfer to RRSP(more flexible)
    b) Tip 2: Draw down maximum from LIF first (before RRSP and RRIF)
    c) Tip 3: Move LIRA --> LIF after 55 years old as soon as possible

    Great video, Adam. I really appreciate the information you disseminated in this one. When I left my previous employer 22 years ago, the LIRA was basically described as the same as an RSP, but for the pension I was needing to leave. It was explained so casually that it never occurred to me that there would be nuances to research. I was surprised to learn from you that I can unlock part of the LIRA today (I am past 55) and never realized there were withdrawal maximums. I was also surprised to learn that the LIRA could be registered in different ways (turns out mine is Federal). Thanks so much for all the work you put into these videos. I always look forward to the next one!

    I had a Federal LIRA, transferred to a LIF, moved 50% to my RRSP and then I was able to use the small amount provision to also transfer the remaining balance in my RRSP. No RRSP contribution room was required. Great video Adam! This info is not something that is widely available to the general public for some reason. It took a considerable effort to find the information on my own and to navigate the system to get it done 6 months ago. The investment firm where the LIRA and RRSP accounts are held required that the documents for both processes be signed under oath.

    • @pwong0227

      I agree it was a painful process and took couple of months in my Ontario LIRA at 55 to transfer to LIF and RRSP.

    Thank you for the explanation .
    So for example , I have a LIRA and the current value is $100,000 . In Ontario
    At 55yrs , it will convert to a LIF . I can unlock 50% so
    $50,000 I put in an RRSP for example . Then the remaining funds in the LIF of $ 50,000 I can draw the max percentage ( 6.51% ) paid out monthly .

    🐝I wish I had seen this video 2 years ago. I never understood the LIRA, and never had a need to since you cannot have access to it until you retire(that was my understanding), so out of sight out of mind. I had forgotten that I had one until this year, and my previous bank is requesting that I provide proof that it was ever transferred from the "Pension Administrator " to them 21 years ago. I no longer bank with that institution, and I have never received any correspondence from this financial institution in the past 21 years. The bank in question was the intended location for the transfer to the LIRA according to my communication with the "Pension Administrator" both verbal and their documentation. I consulted a lawyer for help and he was a complete waste of my time😡. You covered all the bases in this video that's is very helpful to my current situation.🐝

    Hi Adam, thank you so much for your great videos. You mentioned that minimums, maximums and unlocking is depended on where the plan is registered. I live in Quebec and when reading up on LIRAs and LIFs, their web site says "the province in which the member worked when he or she ceased active plan membership". I work in Quebec but the plan is registered in Ontario so I just want to make sure since there is no unlocking in Quebec. Thanks!!

    • @ParallelWealth

      Correct, where you work is NOT necessarily where they plan is based. Sounds like yours is Ontario, which is much better than Quebec for unlocking.

    Say you have a DB pension plan including a DB survivor pension plan. How do you go about in putting that money in a LIRA? How do you know you that the actuarial present value of the plan is correct and the correct value is transferred to the LIRA? What is the role of your partner in this whole process as he or she also has pension claim in the DB plan?

    • @huib1965
      @huib1965 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@freedomlife3623 yes, I agree. It is odd, however that pension plans are not fully funded all of the time and that you can lose it if company goes bankrupt. . If a company gives you a benefit (pension) the company should fund it 100% immediately and externally. There is an obligation for a company to pay the salaries on time as well. DB pensions are nothing less than that; salary you are entitled to at a later stage.

    Great video. I retired as an Ontario resident at 60.5, but got a bit of a surprise because my employer is Quebec based so the fund was registered there, and I couldn't unlock any of it. Bummer. I've been making the minimum withdrawal because I don't need the money that much, so its total value has grown about 30% in the last 5 years even taking 4-ish points out of it annually. I'm 66 now and need to start maxing out the drawdown I think.

    Hi Adam. Thank you for posting such accurate and complete information to help the novice understand financial planning. I am looking to free up as much money as possible so I have access to as much cash as possible in case I need it. I haven't officially "retired" from my job but I live in BC and have reached the age of 55. I want to start withdrawing the maximum amount allowed from my LIF and putting that directly into an RSP account. If I do this will the tax I have to pay be a wash because I've put the funds back into an RSP? The idea here is that I am freeing up access to cash and building up an emergency fund where I am able to withdraw as much as I want after I retire from work when my income will be much lower. Your thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you again.

    • @ParallelWealth
      @ParallelWealth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Question: maybe you answered this in the video but I didn't catch it... define "retirement", because you can start drawing down money from your LIRA/LIF when you retire, without having to unlock the LIRA, but what if I retire early, like age 40 or 45 for example? Do I have to wait until the minimum age (I'm federally regulated) to convert it to a LIF and draw money from it?

One thing I can't seem to find out is if the one time unlocking applies to each LIRA separately? Example : If someone unlocked one LIRA at 55 a few years and has one remaining that was not touched - can it too now be unlocked, and if so and the remainder of that one fund is under the YMPE can it too be transferred out or does that combine with the funds in the previously established LIF. David, if you watch any of our other videos you will have the answer around why we take it early and delay CPP. As soon as it makes sense from an income level, convert your LIRA to LIF to start emptying the most stringent account you have - which hopefully makes sense. As for the registration, contact your financial institution as they will have it on file.

    Hey Adam...I'm having difficulties transferring my LIRA(s) to a RRSP. I actually have 2, one is from SK the other is Federal. Do you have a link to the Canadian Government webpage that states that I can transfer 50% of the federal one and 100% of the SK one. Right now Questrade thinks I can only do this for Hardship, etc...but that refers to withdrawing funds not simply Unlocking them and transferring to a RRSP.

    If you unlock a portion of your LIRA to an RRSP, do you then have to pay tax on this "excess" amount into your RRSP (and I'm saying you've done this in your first year of retirement)?

    Adam. what is the definition of "investment return" as it relates to maximum withdrawal? If I generate $3000 a month in dividend income can I not take $2900 a month as my maximum? Or, is it the "investment return" defined as strictly capital appreciation? Or, is it capital appreciation and dividends added together? Thank you.

However, I could not find information about transferring stocks from a LIF to an RRSP or RRIF. Great video Adam. Thanks for all the information you constantly provide to many Canadians. I read somewhere on a blog that once you've moved your LIRA to a LIF and reach the age of 80, you are required to purchase an annuity with the remaining assets. Is this still true?

    Hello Adam, thanks for summarizing all of this potentially complicated information. One question though. At minute 13:30 there is a table highlighting unlocking a LIRA to RSP and includes Early Retirement criteria. Am I reading this right: If you meet the criteria FIRST (small amount, shorten life, etc) only then can you apply to unlock a portion and transfer to RSP? Sorry, I read the table as posting 2 pieces of information and am making sure that I understand it correctly... as I am currently planning my retirement. Thank you

    • @ParallelWealth
      @ParallelWealth  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you meet any of the 1st criteria, then you could potentially unlock 100%. If you don't meet that criteria then potential for unlocking based on province or territory you live.

    Hi Adam, great content, love your videos! I am 59 years old and I have a very large LIRA that is registered in BC so unfortunately I don't have allot of options for unlocking early. Other than the options you have already discussed in this video; I have read and been told by my Financial Adviser that providing I have contribution room in my RRSP; I would be able to transfer the difference between the minimum and maximum withdrawal amounts of my LIRA to an RRSP annually. The latter option is not spoken about in your video. Are you able to confirm this unlocking strategy is a viable one? Thanks!

    • @ParallelWealth
      @ParallelWealth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tracey, yes you can - but also look to pull the max annually and deposit to your TFSA or non-reg and see what the greatest tax benefit is for you. Everyone will be different, but this is typically a great (and better) way to do it.
