Well, for this review, ease of use should be the key since both, as mentioned by yourself, "does the job" For Saris, its a fixed shape, out, in goes 4 hooks, rack up the bike as it is, and your off. For Seasucker, its compact, but, handle pumps, cleaning of surface (dirty ones might affect the vacuum seal), rear adjustment of the back holder, removal of the front wheel, not to mentioned the additional height the bike stands. For me this 2 comparison has a clear winner, Saris Solo.
Fun video, but as mentioned elsewhere, could be biased? I use a Saris Solo and with the 2 additional straps (rear +front wheel) and a piece of pipe insulation (to prevent the possible chaffing from the front tyre on the colour-coded bumper), it is solid as a rock. Also, love the design of it compared to previous racks which look pre Industrial Revolution! Takes me 3 mins max including the additional straps that I fasten and don't have to valet the car before putting it on!
Hi Chris, I've got the saris bones 3 bike rack and can install it in less than 90 seconds. Once you've done it 3 times you get a way of doing it and can make it unmovable. I have to carry 3 bikes and a child's bike in the boot. Hence the price saved compared to the sucker's.
I have the saris, scratched my old astra up but prob down to me not securing it as well as it could be, however I have just bought the seasucker bomber and really happy knowing it isn't gunna scratch or damage my mazda cx-5 and to see how easy it is to put on is fantastic news, can't wait to use it next weekend.
Chris, One thing you do't mention with the Saris rack is that the bike obscures number plate and lights when it's mounted on the rack. You are legally required to have a number/lights board fitted (which will require an electrical socket to be wired into the boot to connect the board too) .
I've seen a guy get pulled over by the local constabulary for this. I had one too before changing car and always felt like it was a ticket waiting to happen.
I'd disagree on the comment about the seasucker being for people with super expensive cars, and being flashy. I don't own a car, and so have to hire. The advantage of the seasucker is I can use it on whatever car I get allocated
There is a small strap down on the carrier that secures the bike from moving side to side and if your particular rack is missing it then a simple Velcro strap does the same thing. You can buy 6-7 of the saris for the price of the seasucker and your bike is far more secure in the saris.
My advice if you can afford it is the folding Thule bike racks that go on your towbar. When not in use they fold up. They also tilt back so if you're driving an SUV like me you can open the boot (trunk) with your bike on. They also have lights on and space for an auxillary number plate. Rather heavy and even folded up they do take up some space but they work brilliantly. The bike clamp and the tow ball clamp has a key so that you can lock it to prevent theft of both the rack or your bike(s).
Yeah I am doing some research currently. Neither of these 2 options appeal to me. Currently looking at an XLC cc-05 azura xtra led (now that's a mouthful) as a cheaper replacement to a Thule rack
Ive used bike racks before and i wont lie i spent every minute looking out the back window at the bikes. Not great for me. Currently looking at the mount evo solo which is very similar to the seasucker hence how i ended up here lol. Riding a santa cruz so i want to make sure it gets to every ride i take it on.
Dude, I travlled from the north of England to the alps... 24 hours of travel with two bikes on the roof in ALL weather conditions and it was still as solid at the end as it was from the start!
So you need to take a clean dry cloth with you for after your ride if it’s raining What’s the suckers like if it doesn’t stop raining and you have to apply them to the car Will they stick if the paint work is wet?
Some rear spoilers in some vehicles are only attached by a 3M adhesive only and it is not screwed to the vehicles main body, attaching something with substantial weight via strap hooks on might not be a great idea. Let along some small scratches at the rear fender and hatch. And cops tagging along because they can’t see the license plate number clearly.
Bought a cheap version of the Sea Sucker called RockBros for a just over a 100 pounds and works a treat! Maybe good to compare like for like products, in your Expensive vs Cheap series.. Otherwise great video as always :-)
Ha! Yeah, it's night and day quicker when you stop the timer before you've finished for the sea sucker but time yourself reading the instructions for the Saris. How much were sea sucker paying you for that much bias?
I wouldn’t consider the sea sucker. The Saris is much better and will work with cars, SUV’s or minivans and it doesn’t matter what condition the paint work is in. If the surface under the sea sucker isn’t pristine then it won’t get a proper seal and when your bike falls off the roof it further damages your car in addition to destroying your bike.
Did you need to buy a plate/light board for the Saris Solo? I recently bought the Saris Solo for my MK3 Grand Scenic and find it a bit obscuring my number plate due to the bottom strap.
Not sûre on the quicker to install. The différence was not that huge and for the cheap one it was clearly the first Time... One other little avantage for the cheap one is on the aero aspect, tour car will need less fuel... But that IS definitely a good gadget
That seas sucker can be done in under a minute easy I just wanted to show even with cleaning the car and taking your time it's still quicker then the cheaper one
Course you can. If its mounted correctly there is no obstacle. I could open the boot on my focus with 3 bikes on (does require a bit of effort though and hold the boot open)
@@jackmason7823 The statement as done expecting using the opening in the "normal" way and open all the way in all the cars models, expecting the bike not to touch the car in any way, not getting the antena that some cars have, etc if you have caution of course you can use that type of rack
lol, what a waste of money, cheap one was clearly quicker and easier to fit and you don't need to worry about height restrictions. Also looked sturdy and it didn't need the cable tie. Sarin easily wins that.
Chris. Thank you for the review, unfortunately, I believe the review was biased. As others have already stated, you already knew how to install the Sea-sucker I believe you even mentioned it in the video. I and many viewers believe, you would have spent more time installing the Seasucker than the Saris. Why? Simply put, you would have had to read how to suck the air out, you would have spent additional time waiting for the orange to disappear etc. My guess, the first time, probably took you 10 minutes or more. Disassembling your bike to install it is better than attaching your bike? Interesting opinion as I like to load my bike and go. I can understand that there might be people that like to detail their car just to install a bike rack, disassemble their bike and then load it. Especially in colder weather. Interesting that you didn't film going over the speed bumps with the Seasucker. I would be interested in the potential roof rattle that I'm guessing occurs. I also noticed that you applied a tie strip to the pedals when installing the Seasucker, but failed to do so with the Saris, yet that was a negative when reviewing the Saris. At the end of the day, the Seasucker is as you mentioned trendy and is made for a specific demographic, but from an unbiased opinion, it's a waste of money in comparison. More time is used installing it in comparison to the Saris. The Seasucker also has more potential for harm to your bike and to your vehicle. The only clear win for the Seasucker was storage, unless the suction covers are bulky? I'm not attempting to troll the review, it just appears to be a paid review instead of unbiased.
Well I’ve just stop this at seven minutes. I can see the way it’s going to go this test. Not trying like for like, You’ve already tried to See Sucker beforehand and I’m gathering from your tone it’s a foregone conclusion. Can somebody let me know if I was right then I don’t have to watch the rest of the video.

*Fits my car perfectly with my new **Latest.Bike** raker , very easy to set up and take down. Great quality and price, very happy with this purchase!*

Don't forget he had already used the sea sucker before so he knew how to so it will be quicker than working out how to put the other one on

Yep me mate forgot about his bike on the rooftop. Went under a low bridge. His carbon seat post didn't 😱

Between you and Phil Gaimon, I'm sold. Ordering one today.
I have an Xterra, so I’ll be going with your FIRST option.. Thanks! 🇺🇸
I'd disagree on the comment about the seasucker being for people with super expensive cars, and being flashy. I don't own a car, and so have to hire. The advantage of the seasucker is I can use it on whatever car I get allocated
The bike slides side-to-side with the trunk-mount/strap bike rack, which could rub the paint off the bike and cause the wheel to rub the bumper/trunk.

I tried to use the cheap version but I have a Scott Genius that doesn't fit on that type so I need the more expensive one.

39 quid can’t go wrong with the cheapo saris rack. Only thing I did was take a pedal off so it didn’t touch the paintwork on boot.
No matter what I just don’t trust the sea sucker. Something about it that just makes me think it might come off depending on weather conditions
Dude, I travlled from the north of England to the alps... 24 hours of travel with two bikes on the roof in ALL weather conditions and it was still as solid at the end as it was from the start!

Was Cam using the seesucker in a recent video on his new car? I’m impressed with the seesucker though.
Put the front forks on the sea sucker before you mount it
I wouldn’t consider the sea sucker. The Saris is much better and will work with cars, SUV’s or minivans and it doesn’t matter what condition the paint work is in. Yup bike rack, who why. Kids. Oh. Yeh. Good point Chris good content big man

I didn’t…. I’ve not really thought If it gets in the way of the plate or not!!
What no intro transition today? Half the reason I tune in....LOL
My bad...
Don’t you normally drive a Fiat multipla? Who’s car did you nick?
🤣🤣🤣
You did not attach the side straps on the saris rack also failed to secure the wheel with side strap...
Not sûre on the quicker to install. The différence was not that huge and for the cheap one it was clearly the first Time... One other little avantage for the cheap one is on the aero aspect, tour car will need less fuel... But that IS definitely a good gadget

I would never use something like the Seasucker. If the Saris fails, I lose my bike. If the Seasucker fails, my car is screwed as well.
2 minutes faster only less safe plus tyre has to be removed back rack wins easy
the problem is that the bike on the rear rack is swinging forward and backward while driving.
I think one big downside of the cheap bike rack is that you cannot open the trunk with the bike there
I totally forgot to mention that!!! Good call!!
MASSIVE downside...again, especially with kids when you need to get in and out of the boot.
If the saris is securely/tightly mounted to the trunk you should be able to open your trunk with it on.
Course you can. If its mounted correctly there is no obstacle. I could open the boot on my focus with 3 bikes on (does require a bit of effort though and hold the boot open)

nah man, every time I use it i'm terrified my bike is going to disappear off the back! still there though but moves.... alot!!
@@chrispritch ah i see.. maybe not so great then :D
Also obscures the numberplate
Chris.

Agree 100%
Tbh I agree with this as well.
Sea sucker is great for a single bike, especially if you have more than one car... but if you want to carry two or more bikes, it gets expensive..!
Very biased , add the time to take off both mounts and then reattach the wheel
You already marred the paint when you “cleaned” the roof. No need to worry about the pedal anymore.

You where right
Can't wait to see the follow up video of when the suction cup fails. Or, you forget it once and it becomes someone else's.
Nothing quicker than a Seasucker??? Clearly you have never heard of the Thule Express 970! th-cam.com/video/taiEwzM_X18/w-d-xo.html
