    @Postcolonialism Have you noticed how in his recent public appearances Žižek attacks exactly this Foucauldian conceptualization of the discursive? Foucault's standpoint on discourse is analogous to Deleuze's point that desire places one's class interest (which brought me to your channel). What do you think, with regard to left strategies, where did Žižek's desire place his class interest? Or in other words, how does Žižek's lack, negation or contradiction cracks differ from J. Peterson's "pending doom"?

    • @masoodraja

    Thank you Dr Raja, this is extremely useful. I have some questions though: 1. When we say that something is 'discursively produced', is it always implied that it is not true or consistent? 2. Would you say that, grand narratives such as 'the manifest destiny' are discursively produced?

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Good to see you after a while. I think the question of truth would be moot here. What we will learn is as to what enables a statement to offer itself as truth. Yes, the concept of manifest destiny might have offered itself as natural but it was obviously constructed within a discourse of power.

    I have a question can we say that a discursive framework mean a contextualized discourse? Also is identity (within cultural studies definition ) a subject to discursive discourses? For example in religion and humanist approach, identity is the true self or essence, yet in other contexts, it's a subject to circumstances and cultural conjunctures.

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you a million for this video, I really wanted to know what “discursive means”, and I want to check that I understood it. So “discursive” means to use, see or interpret something (like a concept a story, a term etc.) but within the particularity of the discourse or context in which it that “something” appears because it might have a different interpretation in another discourse or context. So does “X person wrote discursively to claim agency” mean that he/she is resisting a norm?

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. What I mean is that discursive is what is framed or produced by a discourse. It will only hold that meaning within that discourse. I am not talking of interpretation, for that is a completely different subject.

    Masood, I read a long time ago (cannot locate the source) that Foucault began his career as a Marxist, abandoned Marxism, then emended at least one of his books to eliminate its Marxian content. Is that true?

      @masoodraja  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Not sure of the amendment part, but he was a member of the French Communist Party, until he and others abandoned their Marxist loyalties. He was, however, trained by Marxists like Louis Althusser. I think these things are included in The Lives of Michel Foucault.

    I did indeed read "discursive" in a book, and then did indeed look it up, and was indeed confused by the literary definition given the context in which I read it. It was a little uncanny for the first few minutes of this video, published two years ago, to describe to me what I had just finished doing two minutes ago!
    If I'm understanding the definition correctly, I could have some fun in saying that my confusion on reading the definition online is because I've now consumed the word 'discursive' in two discursive contexts: one structure within the text (Foucauldian) and another in the perhaps more popular definition (literary). Some more fun: In _this_ context, 'discursive' is recursive!
    Thanks for the great explanation :)

    Thanks for the video. In your video of user experience research and Paulo Freire aren’t u there taking the work related to one discourse and linking it to another? Correct me if I’m wrong, but if that is what you did, then are there conditions as to when you can or can’t use a discursively produced work for the benefit of another field of study? I haven’t read enough on discourse to know these terms as well as you do, so if I’m wrong please correct me.

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is nothing wrong in putting two discourses in conversation. In this case, however, the main discourse is the same: how to understand people and their needs. But as you might have noticed that I was suggesting there that design people could benefit by how Freire explains the process of learning from the people. I don’t recall reading Freire from a purely design perspective or vice versa. It is just like saying here is how the Bible explains the Fall of Adam and then giving the story of how Islam explains the same story. Both stories mean something in their respective discourses but can also inform each other. But I suggest you keep reading more, because I do not see the contradiction.
