Did similar earlier this year. Had this track playing when exploring temples etc in Kyoto. Lost in Translation ignited my wish to visit Japan (heading over again next yr)
I'm living in Fuji city and found the exact spot where the Shinkansen track is where you see the bridge under construction on the Shin Tomei highway. This scene is near where the tracks go by a MaxValu in Fuji Enoo. I also took a trip from Fuji city to Kyoto Station where those scenes are filmed. Love the movie and Japan!
Not the brightest or flashiest (or the most talked-about)s scene in the movie, but the most beautiful. It really portrays how it feels to "be alone in a crowd", and the scene, where she longingly watches how the groom caringly and tenderly leads the bride over the steps is pure beauty. Especially because it is followed up by the o-mikuji scene, where it is left up to the viewer's imagination what she wishes for herself (happiness, happy marriage with her absent-minded husbond, a long life, riches or something fifth).
This is also a companion scene to one where Charlotte calls her friend, said she went to a Buddhist temple and felt nothing. The whole trip was about trying to find “the real Japan” of her imagination. After meeting Bob, Charlotte was able to partially fulfill her hopes in this scene. Getting out of the hotel, the bustle of Tokyo for a while and finally feeling something for a bit. Bob also did this when he went golfing by Mount Fuji.
My interpretation is that she got a bad fortune and therefore ties it up to the tree to push it away (see your link). At another point she is also shown as stepping on the high threshold of the wooden gate as she enters the temple, which is also bearing bad luck. Behind the quiet tranquility of the scene we can actually see ominous signs of disfunction for Charlotte. Something might be wrong in her life brewing discontent, and the temple is trying to tell her. Maybe she needs to get away from something. Her marriage?
@@itsstans75that is not true. I've seen Fuji many times on the Shinkansen from Tokyo and at Fuji city which is where the scene is in the movie! I'm living in Fuji city now.
2:01 when I visited Kyoto in 2015 I stepped on the same rocks, thinking of this scene. I think a lot of fans of this film do this if they get to Kyoto. The city is quite beautiful, wish I had spent more time there. Have fond memories of it.
When I was in my early 20’s, I was very depressed and suicidal, and I always felt like I could relate to Charlotte’s character. This scene reminds me of when I was travelling alone in India, and the feeling of loneliness and emptiness I felt, whilst in love with the culture of a foreign country. I look back at this film and see it as a hug that stayed with me during those years.

I was in Kyoto earlier this year and had a lovely day visiting some of the temples, including Nanzen-ji in this video. It was a lovely and calm day. I think of it often.
take a deep breath and hold on for one moment. let your sorrows go and enjoy the beauty of life. so calm but sad @ the same time. this scene gets me every single time i‘m watching it again. We‘re all lonely travellers in this world.
Aren't you supposed to pause @ each stone? The view is designed to be slightly different from each stepping stone, if that's the place I recall from 40 years ago
I drove also with Shinkansen from Tokio to Kyoto and could enjoy the great view to the seaside and the Mountainside. And I could also see a wedding like this. Japan is really strange but great! By the way - fantastic movie which I watch again and again.
I can't watch this scene / listen to this track without tearing up. Both just hit me at the right time. Excellent track & Johansson does her best work in this film. (As does Murray, IMO). As "SUGAR XYLER" put it, haunting.
Such a beautiful culture,I'm half-Buddist so I would definetly end up meditating in a Buddist Temple for weeks, months or years on end.Society needs to return to a simpler lifestyle, simpler values.
This is me. She is me... I am her. Nothing better than being a silent observer of the beauty of our species on this beautiful floating rock that we call Earth...
Braden Bennett lol Tokyo was not spared at all, we just burnt it to the ground with incendiary bombs and killed more people than the A-bombs did. Look up the Tokyo fire bombings.....it suffered worse than any city in WW2 besides Dresden or Stalingrad
You my friend cleary never been to Japan... I've been to Japan twice and they are the most generous loving and polite people I have ever met. They made me feel welcome everywhere I went and it is one of the most amazing countries in the world. And I'm a westener. Maybe try to leave your trailer park and see a bit of the world instead of assuming Fox News is telling the truth about the world out there?
@David Gravemaker I spent two weeks in Japan and my experience was similar to yours. But Japan has a well documented xenophobic history. Insulting people that live in trailer parks and trying to somehow mix in Fox News just makes you look ignorant and not at all like one of the "most generous loving and polite people."

I love everything about this film. No wasted scenes or words.
I am in Kyoto at the moment... Nothing can capture the beauty of this place and its energy. Truly magical...
The Fuji view from the shinkansen is pure bliss, it only lasts 20 minutes but it sticks with you forever once you experienced it.
Truth is you won’t get to see Mt Fuji on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto.
I have experienced that two weeks ago. Totally agree with you
@@itsstans75 Bollocks. On clear days you can see Fuji on the Tokyo-Osaka Shinkansen. I did.

This one of the BEST sequence ever in a movie... of all time. A sequence which captures the quintessence of Japan and the meaning of the movie

I have literally walked the same steps during my visit to Kyoto. So heartbreaking to watch this.
Heartbreaking? And yes many people including fans of the movie walk those steps.
I hope to do the same one day.

This makes me miss japan. I miss exploring different parts of japan that people don’t always document.
Kyoto? Best known tourist city in Japan. I miss the onsen, the washlets, the cleanliness and decent Tempura and Udon.
My single favourite sequence in cinema
anyone who has lived in Japan will appreciate this scene.
Is it Japan a depressing place?
Great as a tourist but a weird and unwelcoming place to live as an actual expat.
@@davsavchav I've heard that from some others--
The amazing beauty, of simple complexities!
Possibly I would have not discovered this beauty if I did not watch the entire filmography of Scarlett. What I golden work I would have lost!
Nanzenji and Heian Jingu, close to where I used to live. There's nowhere like Kyoto.
hauntingly beautiful music
